I feel like the drumming in the song 48 Hours To Go by Colonel Claypool'd be right up your alley... if i saw a cover of the song by you it's just make my day. I love your work :3
@pccope05 I wouldn't recommend electronic drums if you're still learning. They're way too easy to make sound good. You just hit them and you get a perfect drum/snare/cymbal sound. With acoustic drums, you learn how to hit them properly and learn the proper technique to get them to sound right. Once you have that, then playing on an electronic kit becomes fun, because you play them just like normal drums and they sound similar, configurable, etc. But definitely learn on a loud acoustic kit!
@egyokeo very valid points. The only problem is that I don't have the space for a full acoustic kit. I'm honestly just trying to learn the basics for now. I figured an ekit would be sufficient for that, but as you stated, learning how to strike acoustic drums appropriately to create various sounds is something that can't be created on an ekit.
@egyokeo I've been on an acoustic set for about 3 years now and have been considering getting an electric set. Any recommendations? Also, I love your drum covers, always such clean performance. Keep rockin!
@offbeatturok0 thanks! If you can, I'd stick with acoustic for a few more years at least. It really helps with not developing bad habits, because you really have to play things "right" on acoustic before it sounds like what you're intending... I can think of a few places in some of my V-drums vids where I hit the hi-hat wrong, yet it sounds like I intended... that wouldn't have happened on acoustic. that said, for an e-kit, top-of-the-line Roland V-Drums is the way to go!
@NekkaLucifer yup! that's why i haven't had many drum videos. Harp is all I play now. I just got inspired to play this song on drums, so I practiced it, then recorded it.... not sure what I'll do next on drums... maybe a porcupine tree song since i'm obsessed with that band right now.
@givemethelotion i always make faces that don't match anything. i was just trying to play the song at that part (which is an inside joke with the bass player... that latin-ish "dah--dah---dah--dah-dah" hit, spilling into the start of the next measure).
My drum tutor keeps telling me not to over complicate curtain drum tracks but I always think if you can play that good why not show it. Would you ever go over the top Egyokeo?
@ghhadfieldj He's right. Doesn't matter how good you are, the only people in the audience there for the drummer, are the drummers. Everyone else is there for the singer, and to a lesser extent the guitarist. To me, one of the hardest parts of having awesome skills is knowing exactly when to utilise them. For me it's all about finding "gaps in interest". When there's no vocals, or a very simple guitar riff, that's when the drummer can pull a few cool fills to keep it sounding interesting.
@ghhadfieldj A song is not the time to show your skills. As a drummer, it's very important for us to add groove and feel to a track. Showing off with a band will 1.) Overpower the music. 2.) Make the band hate you. If you want to show off, make time for a drum solo. Trust me, you will be much more satisfied with your playing if you just stick it to the groove.
@ghhadfieldj not sure if you're saying i played too much or what :-) I had much more crazy things only a drummer would like planned for this song, but I decided to go for a simpler straight forward just-play-the-song approach. I like to play and hear the crazy drummers-only stuff, but it can hurt the song. Sometimes when I listen to music (like porcupine tree) I love the music, the drummer IMO is doing too much at times, but sounds soooo good. to me. thx for the insightful comment!

Great drumming and sound. What an unusual song very complex both rhythmically and metrically. Great vehicle for your drumming ability.

I love that set. I eventually want a roland. I'm a beginner drummer now, so I'm not sure it makes sense to get one anytime soon..
