I haven't, i stopped about 75% in, as I only borrowed it. I admit that comment was exaggerated, I was angry at the time, I thought GTA's story was decent, but saying its not cliche and RDR is, is ridiculous. The only reason i think GTA4's story was weak, is because I'm used to playing games with MUCH better stories (Mass effect anyone? :P) and those tend to raise my expectations for what games have stories that are good.

THEY ARE COMPLETELY DIFFERENT. Saints Row thrives off being weird and random, letting you do absolutely ridiculous things, with over-powered weapons and just CRAZY.
GTA, is a story-driven game about crime (A summary anyway). Personally I reckon the story is shit, RDR had a much better story, but I understand others like it so meh.
Saints Row has evolved into is own game, and is a completely different game from GTA

GTA IV gave us a brilliant cast of characters, a story filled with emotion, and a villain we hated much much more than Dutch or the Government in RDR. I haven't, i stopped about 75% in, as I only borrowed it. I admit that comment was exaggerated, I was angry at the time, I thought GTA's story was decent, but saying its not cliche and RDR is, is ridiculous. The only reason i think GTA4's story was weak, is because I'm used to playing games with MUCH better stories (Mass effect anyone? :P) and those tend to raise my expectations for what games have stories that are good.

The first Grand Theft Auto game was made in 1997.
Before that, The Elder Scrolls II: Daggerfall was made in 1996, and The Elder Scrolls: Arena was made in 1994. BOTH were "sandbox" games. Other games were probably "sandbox" before them.

Just to be clear SANDBOX IS NOT A GENRE, it is a term used to describe the size of a game, eg: Open-World, Non-Linear, Linear.
GTA, is really an "Action" game (A third-person shooter to be specific).
You obviously have no idea what a sandbox game is. In a Sandbox game you can do whatever you want whenever you want and are not forced to follow a certain path or play a bunch of linear missions.
