That is absolutely absurd, and a tendentious abuse of terms.
Paulson had the Federal Government borrow almost a trillion from the Federal Reserve at interest and against the collateral of future taxes.
He then had--or intended to have--the Federal government give it back to main banks in the Federal REserve, no strings, for their finnacials to extend to the same taxpayers in the form of debt and credit also at interest.
That is the essence of what Lenin defined as Financial Capitalism.
No--but try to advance without the vocabulary and synthesis either Marx or Kant engineered. Can't be done.
Most of the Libertarians are ecoomic romantics--as bad or worse than the absolute moron Ayn Rand, who was an all around idiot, economically and philosophically.
Ron Pauli is just retarded, besides being a sleazeball.
I hate to say this, because whenever I see a comment like the one I'm about to put I would get pissed off. But, what differences has Obama made to Bush's policies so far? He's made a TON of promises, and his promises are godly compared to what Bush did. But, what difference is there between this administration and Bush's? Foreign policy has obviously been upgraded big time, no question, but domestically, it seems to be the same old game for you guys. Am I wrong? I'm Canadian, tell me if I am.
(@ mopsius) The United States is hardly capitalist. You can make a case for it being fascist, not a very strong one but it's doable. The fact that we have government is proof positive that America isn't capitalist. You can't have capitalism with any form of government; it's only achievable with anarchy. Anything else is pseudo-capitalism.
(@ mopsius) Libertarians aren't capitalists either. To say you're a capitalist is saying you're an anarchist as well. Libertarians still believe in some form of government therefore they can't be capitalists. Marx's criticisms of capitalism are based on flawed economical theories and his views should be discarded. The current problem with "capitalism" is people want capitalism and government. The two can't mix and trying to make them mix is only going to cause you headaches.
(@ mopsius) You can obviously be an anarchist and not be a capitalist but you can't be a capitalist and not be an anarchist. Under anarchy many of the evils that Marx prescribes to capitalism would not exist. For example without government things like imperialism wouldn't happen. A large army is an extremely expensive endeavor and few businesses, if any, would risk it for the slim chance of expanding their markets through military force.
(@ mopsius) Capitalism can only exist in anarchy. Even the "Minimal State" advocated by some Libertarians will still put limits on the market and therefore can't be truly capitalist. The United States is at best a mixed economy with some capitalist features but it's not a capitalist country.
(@ mopsius) Stay classy mopsius. Never knew insults somehow counted towards proving a point. I've never once insulted you yet you personal attack me for explaining my understanding of Capitalism. Also just to put it out there, I don't support Capitalism because I don't support anarchy. However I think Marx is wrong as well.
Lose the imperative, Malawolfie, or I'll add, "Go fuck yourself."
You have NO idea what your are taking about--you are just running off at the mouth in some imaginary world, like the Paulistas with their Smith and Locke.
(@ mopsius) Didnt know disagree with mopsius made you a moron. I dont support Ron Paul or the Libertarians. I happen to agree that they are incorrect in their thinking. However I guess disagreeing with you mean I know nothing.
That is true. Capitalism is more than the simple existence of a market system or the existence of trade. Otherwise we could call some tribes capitalist simply because they trade.
Almost all capitalist historians and economists trace the advent of "capitalism" back to the 14th century Italian city-states which started practicing early forms of capitalism when the merchant class was allowed to trade and sell without paying homage to the feudal system or the king.
(@ mopsius) So again it's disagree with mopsius and you're a moron. Sorry if I don't use the word capitalism in the way Marx does, didn't know he had a monopoly on the word.
(@ mopsius) Capitalism first used by William Makepeace Thackeray and capitalist has been used as far back as seventeenth century. Marx might have been the first to use capitalism to refer to certain kind of economical system but hardly was the first person to use the term which shows the meaning of a word can change over time. I define capitalism in the same way anarcho-capitalists define it.
"Capital evolved from Capitale, a late Latin word based on proto-Indo-European kaput, meaning "head"—also the origin of chattel and cattle in the sense of movable property (only much later to refer only to livestock). Capitale emerged in the 12th to 13th centuries in the sense of funds, stock of merchandise, sum of money, or money carrying interest..."
"By 1283 it was used in the sense of the capital assets of a trading firm. It was frequently interchanged with a number of other words—wealth, money, funds, goods, principal, assets, property, patrimony."
"The Oxford English Dictionary, considered an authority on the English language, credits William Makepeace Thackeray for the first published use of the word capitalism in his novel, The Newcomes (1853-55), though it is clear from its context that this refers to finance capital, rather than as a system. Financiers in 19th century novels tend to get a bad press; see Trollopes The Way We Live Now.
(@ mopsius) Which goes to my point that just because a word has definition A x number of years ago doesn't mean the same word has that definition today. So I'm not obligated to follow Marx's definition when alternate definitions exist. I define it in the same context as anarcho-capitalists and because of how they define it, I don't support capitalism.
I didn't read that. I read that they were pushing it back to their 2010 agenda. They are trying to get health care done. I'd rather have Obama in trying to get it done then a Republican who would never do anything to make a corporation pay their fair share.
News flash, a lot of people who voted for Obama are pissed at his lack of productivity so far. Apparently you didn't watch this clip, cause this progressive talk show host was just criticizing him.
Of course Obambi let the corporations off the hook. He is going to be a 1 term EPIC FAIL and will get PWNED by Sarah Palin! People will vote for Palin for Palin will have all the Corporation CEOs do her bidding. If any male CEO dares cross Palin, she will UNLEASH the WRATH OF GOD HERSELF onto the entire corporation and EXPOSE all the men's PUSSIES for the WHOLE WORLD TO SEE!
If you honestly bought into Obama & his speeches, then you deserve everything you're about to get, how's that change coming?President's are puppets including Obama,he knows who his Masters are..
Obama seems to be doing an excellent job of bankrupting the middle class...I just heard a stat from msnbc that the health industry plans on raising premiums 40% due to the insurance mandate...with projections for the future as high as 111%. Bankrupting the middle class will exacerbate the recession because people will have even less spending capability(the term spending power seems like a complete misnomer). Fuck the US with its privilege and pretense.
Yeah that's the insurance industry threatening the American public if we get a public option. The insurance industry does not run America. I'm not understanding why people are all for the insurance industry robbing us blind for no reason whatsoever. They have not lost any profits, they are trying to take as much as they can people in tough times.
Obama is big corporation man, the parties are all bought and sold to the corporations....Repubs and Dems, bought and paid for.....3rd party only chance to save us all from this debacle ! Time for us to all stop fighting amongst ourselves and join together....It is the people against the corporate government!
I know I'm being a smart-ass now, but it was clear from the beginning - i.e. the election - that there will NOT be change and that things will continue basically just like they were planned during bushs term. At least the important and relevant ones.
What did people expect? Seriously why does it work *every* single time that people believe in promises, politicians break them, and then make new promises and people believe and hope again. Wtf? It doesn't work for all people, but way too many.
And its not like these politicians have a choice in the matter! You need to campaign to get voted into office, you need money to campaign, you need donations to get money, and the people who have the most money are the corporations! The corporations know this, so they exploit this broken system to make more money!
Its a sad, sad thing. Maybe if Obama gets re-elected, he'll decide he doesn't need the corporations any more, and America will finally get the "change" it voted for.
Is it just me or does it seem like there really is no "Government" ... like its all a big show to make us feel like we matter, and all the while a group of powerful corporations structure the "game" to their own favor. I'm not trying to get all "Conspiracy Theory" or anything ... but there are days it sure feels this way.
this is why i HATE politicians. you can say whatever you want, all politicians are slaves to loobyist, EVERYONE!!! they dont give a damn about either one of us...
Corporations own and run the US. Obama is little more than a middle-man in my eyes, smoothing things over between the corporations and the average citizens. He's not going to bring about significant change because that's not what he was bought to do. He'll have a more positive impact than Bush, but it won't be any kind of fundamental change from what has come before (other than in rhetoric of course).
To become a president you need a lot of coverage. A lot of coverage costs truckloads of money and requires good connections. Only big corporations have that kind of money and connections. For this reason only corporation backed candidates get enough coverage to become a president.
Who do corporation candidates really represent as a president: people or corporations? Do I need to answer?
does the host here know the difference between income and capital gains, and understand the difference in associated risk. Throwing around the phrases "pay their fair share" and "redistribute the wealth", is it any wonder that the 10% of the US that pays for all the US wishes to hide what they earn from such looting?
But let's see, maybe he will fight for this once the healthcare battle is won to avoid having to fight insurance companies and coorporations at the same time.
if that happened american would be ripped apart. Racial tensions would explode, look how bad things with oj. If obama got it from a redneck, the blacks would never forget it for the rest of history, lots still complain about slavery. Iraq, economic crisis, falling dollar, dead obama then end of empire, nail in the coffin for USA.
Also, if Obama was murdered, Joe Biden would become the president... You really want *that* to happen? Or would he need to be murdered too? Perhaps murder the whole Obama cabinet while at it. Bomb the senate, etc.
Corporations own politicians. If you want some actual work done, pressure your reps, senators, try to elect better ones, pressure Obama, try to get lobbying stopped,..
With supreme court allowing unlimited donations, tho', you're screwed
lol, imagine what would happened with your "small government". I bet it would be legal to force you to work , and it would be illegal to not buy mcdonalds every day.
Illness? You mean the illness that makes me see reality? I would say it's ill to create crazy plans that rely only on the honesty of others. You must realize that with small government people are open completely to exploitation. Try and fight a corporation now, with strict rules intact. You will get nothing. With small weak government, will will be simply sent to shackles.
You make it sound like it's a "line of scrimmage" problem... like the GOV needs 340 lbs Tackles (be large) to take on 340 lbs Defensive Line... Don't you think that's Naive???
For example, smaller gov (smaller budget) would be achieved thru a smaller Military...which would lead to reduce "Gov Buying", which leads to less Military Contractors... (keepin it simple in 500 charac)
Yes, it is nice in that way. But what happens when the state has 3 or 4 people who are responsible for it, and all of them are bought? The smaller the government, the fewer people are there to buy.
sorry, this argument will go nowhere if you keep modeling GOV size with the number of people involved. It's a matter of Budget and intrusion, that's the measure of "size of Gov".
In its intrusion, it does not allow small business to compete more fairly with large business, hence it tends to allow Corp to grow larger and larger, leaving the middle class entrepreneurs by the way-side. This hurts the people.
I dont thing less intrusion would help the small guy. I think that a proper intrusion would actually help small businesses. It's the intrusion that would say "No big corporation, you cant open your diary processor here, there are many small diaries here, you will drown them" if done fairly. No intrusion would just force bigger companies to care less about the conditions of workers, and the quality of the product. But sure, the current "Take a billion" policy is rubbish, I agree.
"Take a billion" policy starts with GOVs inability to print its own money. Instead the Federal Reserve has taken over this function (1913), this is where all the "evil" starts. Big Corps are not necessarily "evil", afterall, we all benefit from their success, including nice retirements.... this is very complicated.
No, because socialism ironically always leads to Facsism.....but your type is very awkward in thought, and that notion doesn't register.
Look up the difference between "liberated" and "regulated" markets.... there is a huge difference. Most people don't have the vocabulary down well enough to allow for an intelligent converseation. See ya'
Wrong, Fascism is a left and "right" phenomena.....it's a phenomena of Large Intrusive Gov. You need to look up the definition of Fascism instead of relying on the Potsmoker's Dictionary (or urban legend). In the context of USA today, a conservative is far from Fascism, while a Progressive Liberal and Neocon are teetering on the edge. You need to do more research.
True conservatives are nothing like fascists, I'll give you that. Socialism isn't always far left either(See corporate socialism). But generally, they are extremes of what we consider left wing and right wing. When you think of Fascist, you think of people like Sarah Palin who are authoritarians. On the political compass, Fascism would be in the center economically, but at the top of authoritarian, which is where most modern right wingers sleep.
For the record, I am a Ron Paul conservative libertarian, because I believe in his foreign policy.... if the "right" could have returned to its roots (instead being NEOCON), we would be out of Iraq and Afghanistan already. In the meantime, Obama (NeoLib) is expanding the "total war effort" (cut a little in Iraq, expand dramatically in Afghan/Pakistan).
YOU were calling Cenk a "socialist tool". Cenk is a capitalist, but he believes some government regulation is needed to keep the corporations in check. This does not, however, make him a socialist, as you were trying to claim.
Yes, I am calling Cenk a "socialist tool", because he repeatedly leans left. He is a NEOLIB. BTW, Bush administration was "socialist" too (expanding GOV). Yes, many things in American Politics are purposely confused to create an artificial argument for the masses, and Cenk is helping in that effort (probably unwittingly).
If Bush was a socialist almost every US president was a socialist. I don't think you know the meaning of the word. You seem to have a very simplistic, black and white view of politics and economics. as in: one is either a capitalist or socialist and there is no in between. It is you who are the corporate tool, unwittingly, toeing the pro-corporate/anti-government line.
Hey, don't blame me... I voted THIRD PARTY last time...and will always continue to do so the remainder of life....although it won't make a difference.
Obomba is the "can't" in republican't and "crap" in democrap. He's the worst of both parties.

Mainland China is Communist-Fascist.
The US is Capitalist-Fascist.
mopsius 2 years ago
(@ mopsius) The United States is hardly capitalist. You can make a case for it being fascist, not a very strong one but it's doable. The fact that we have government is proof positive that America isn't capitalist. You can't have capitalism with any form of government; it's only achievable with anarchy. Anything else is pseudo-capitalism.
Malawolfie 2 years ago
You are suing silly "Libertarian" definitions.
The US is the essence of Capitalist--in its Financial Capitalist Imperialist stage.
Marx defined Captialism--it has very little to do with "markets", etc.
mopsius 2 years ago
(@ mopsius) Libertarians aren't capitalists either. To say you're a capitalist is saying you're an anarchist as well. Libertarians still believe in some form of government therefore they can't be capitalists. Marx's criticisms of capitalism are based on flawed economical theories and his views should be discarded. The current problem with "capitalism" is people want capitalism and government. The two can't mix and trying to make them mix is only going to cause you headaches.
Malawolfie 2 years ago
Not to put too fine a point on it, Malawoflie, you have no idea what you are talking about.
Marx and Bakunin saw eye to eye on many things, and Bakunin realized later the brilliance of Marx's economic analysis.
Philosophically Marx was weak because he relied too much on Hegel.
mopsius 2 years ago
The main point is that Marx and Ricardo between the two of them defined the system they were analysing as "Captialism", and correctly.
Marx also saw it as a stage, again correctly.
There is a dialectic as well--to competition, for example,in this or that context, but Marx sorrily attached it to Hegel taken materially.
You have your head up your ass, Malawoflie.
This is all old hat.
mopsius 2 years ago
(@ mopsius) You can obviously be an anarchist and not be a capitalist but you can't be a capitalist and not be an anarchist. Under anarchy many of the evils that Marx prescribes to capitalism would not exist. For example without government things like imperialism wouldn't happen. A large army is an extremely expensive endeavor and few businesses, if any, would risk it for the slim chance of expanding their markets through military force.
Malawolfie 2 years ago
You are not worth talking to, Malawoflie--your use of "Capitalism" is pure absurdity.
mopsius 2 years ago
(@ mopsius) Capitalism can only exist in anarchy. Even the "Minimal State" advocated by some Libertarians will still put limits on the market and therefore can't be truly capitalist. The United States is at best a mixed economy with some capitalist features but it's not a capitalist country.
Malawolfie 2 years ago
You have your head up your ass, Malawolfie.

Malawolfie 2 years ago
The way you use the term "capitalism" is moronic.
Simple as that.
mopsius 2 years ago
"Free enterprise", even where it can be said to exist in this or that restricted form, is NOT the same as Capitalism.
Capitalism has a specific and very useful reference, historically, economically and otherwise.
Neither are markets nor even in some cases a market economy "Capitalism" just because they are markets.
The Right, and the Capitalists, have spent decades engineering this abuse of terms for their own political purposes.
mopsius 2 years ago
That is true. Capitalism is more than the simple existence of a market system or the existence of trade. Otherwise we could call some tribes capitalist simply because they trade.
Almost all capitalist historians and economists trace the advent of "capitalism" back to the 14th century Italian city-states which started practicing early forms of capitalism when the merchant class was allowed to trade and sell without paying homage to the feudal system or the king.
A86 2 years ago
(@ mopsius) So again it's disagree with mopsius and you're a moron. Sorry if I don't use the word capitalism in the way Marx does, didn't know he had a monopoly on the word.
Malawolfie 2 years ago
Actually Marx has a monopoly on the origin and use of the term--and you obviously don't know that, Malawolfie.
You have your own private language--your business.
mopsius 2 years ago
(@ mopsius) Capitalism first used by William Makepeace Thackeray and capitalist has been used as far back as seventeenth century. Marx might have been the first to use capitalism to refer to certain kind of economical system but hardly was the first person to use the term which shows the meaning of a word can change over time. I define capitalism in the same way anarcho-capitalists define it.
Malawolfie 2 years ago
"Capital evolved from Capitale, a late Latin word based on proto-Indo-European kaput, meaning "head"—also the origin of chattel and cattle in the sense of movable property (only much later to refer only to livestock). Capitale emerged in the 12th to 13th centuries in the sense of funds, stock of merchandise, sum of money, or money carrying interest..."
mopsius 2 years ago
"By 1283 it was used in the sense of the capital assets of a trading firm. It was frequently interchanged with a number of other words—wealth, money, funds, goods, principal, assets, property, patrimony."
mopsius 2 years ago
"The Oxford English Dictionary, considered an authority on the English language, credits William Makepeace Thackeray for the first published use of the word capitalism in his novel, The Newcomes (1853-55), though it is clear from its context that this refers to finance capital, rather than as a system. Financiers in 19th century novels tend to get a bad press; see Trollopes The Way We Live Now.

(@ mopsius) Which goes to my point that just because a word has definition A x number of years ago doesn't mean the same word has that definition today. So I'm not obligated to follow Marx's definition when alternate definitions exist.
UnderseaCaveman 2 years ago
Yes, it is nice in that way. But what happens when the state has 3 or 4 people who are responsible for it, and all of them are bought? The smaller the government, the fewer people are there to buy.
ArtypNk 2 years ago
artynk,
sorry, this argument will go nowhere if you keep modeling GOV size with the number of people involved.
UnderseaCaveman 2 years ago
I dont thing less intrusion would help the small guy. I think that a proper intrusion would actually help small businesses. It's the intrusion that would say "No big corporation, you cant open your diary processor here, there are many small diaries here, you will drown them" if done fairly. No intrusion would just force bigger companies to care less about the conditions of workers, and the quality of the product. But sure, the current "Take a billion" policy is rubbish, I agree.
ArtypNk 2 years ago
"Take a billion" policy starts with GOVs inability to print its own money. Instead the Federal Reserve has taken over this function (1913), this is where all the "evil" starts. Big Corps are not necessarily "evil", afterall, we all benefit from their success, including nice retirements.... this is very complicated.
UnderseaCaveman 2 years ago

True conservatives are nothing like fascists, I'll give you that. Socialism isn't always far left either(See corporate socialism). But generally, they are extremes of what we consider left wing and right wing. When you think of Fascist, you think of people like Sarah Palin who are authoritarians. On the political compass, Fascism would be in the center economically, but at the top of authoritarian, which is where most modern right wingers sleep.
