The thing i find funny is people like Bill Gates and Warren Buffet who are willing to pay higher taxes. They want the government to force them. If they really wanted to pay more, then what is stoping them from writing a check to the government. Not to hate on Bill Gates since I probably wouldn't be typing this without him.
@skeptictom818 Bill Gates does one step better than writing bigger checks to the government.... He gives to charity. (And he does this a LOT in proportion to his income.) Thus he chooses for himself where the money goes, and he has every right to do so. There may be lots of reasons not to like Bill Gates, but "being a scrooge" isn't one of them.
In a truely free society, no they shouldn't . Nobody should be force to pay taxes in a free society that is.
In the society we live, which isn't free by a long shot, rich people who got their wealth through protection from the government should be forced to pay higher taxes.
1 or 2 percent won't destroy all motivation to still invest and work hard, but it can be used to seriously help a lot of people out. It's not as if they earned every single penny on their own. Saying that would be incredibly arrogant. And no, I'm not saying all rich people got money through extortion, I'm not a socialist. I just believe that society should pool its efforts together to help each other, though the government needs serious reforms in efficiency, and not have too much power.
Rich people should pay more taxes? So people who get an education and work hard vs some low life druggie, should pay more? I think not. ALL people regardless of income should pay the same percentage.
@Hooahgoarmy YES! YES! You speak the truth, my brother. Everyone who is rich got there solely by the fruits of their own labor and everyone who is not is a worthless drug abuser. No, it's not circumstances, it's not where you were born, how rich your parents were, your neighborhood, society's prejudices, opportunities that were offered to you that were not to other people, It's all YOU, man.
you are arguing for trickle down economics. That is the most failed economic hypothesis ever offered. I'm totally baffled some people still think it might work.
So what is your suggestion, then? A centrally planned economy? Progressive taxation? Keynesians economics is precisely what LED to this corporatism we have today, that we all hate. But I suppose it's just because we failed to give power to bureocrats with big enough hearts, right?
@Akatam0t0ma as far as taxes go, a progressive tax system is obviously more intelligent. Less likely to hinder the economy, the rich can afford it, and the rich are directly or indirectly bigger consumers of public services, so they deserve to pay more any anyway.
I honestly can't think of any argument where a flat tax would be "fair", let alone not be detrimental to the economy. So seems pretty simple to me.
Err, no, there is NOTHING "more intelligent" about punishing people for being more successful in business.
Although I do think a flat tax would be better than progressive tax, I can't say I am too fond of it either, because ultimately, no matter how much you want to spin it, taxation is EVIL because its extortion and is based on taking people's wealth away at the point of a gun.
Being taxed isn't "punishment" in any circumstance, assuming that the government is providing ANY services that you are consuming/using/enjoying directly or indirectly. So please drop such language if you want to be taken seriously.
The issue with taxes....no matter what system of taxation is in question, is how reasonable the method is. Does it overburden the poor? Does it overburden the rich? How do we measure that?
No, you are simply in denial about the fact that taxation depends on violence. If you don't pay taxes, you get thrown in jail, if you resist strongly enough, you'll end up being shot. Thus far, no statist apologist ever debunked this. Now, if you want to defend state violence, by all means, go ahead, but please just have the decency not to claim that taxation is not extortion, so long as people are forced to pay them at the point of a gun.
@Akatam0t0ma Rich people should pay a slight amount more because the government benefits them more. When you pay for storage, you pay based on how much stuff you have stored and protected. The rich have more assets, thus there is more for them to protect. Taxation is theft? Taxes are used for so many things that you enjoy every day. Not paying some money to benefit the community while benefiting from the community is theft. Besides, our taxes are not nearly the highest in industrialized nations.
Ohhh, so now the government benefits the rich more? No shit Sherlock! All the time you statist say how evil and immoral we are to want the government to get out of our lives because its giant-hearted and huge brained omnibenevolent bureaucrats only wants to see to that we all to live in mansions with a private jet,but now you claim the "EVIL KAPITALEEZT PIG RICH!!!11oneone" benefit more from it, yet still cling to it? Wow, just fucking WOW!
@Akatam0t0ma Okay sir, I did not say any of that. The quote that you used to misrepresent me was intended to point out that the rich inherently enjoy a larger benefit from the government, so they should pay more to return to society. Funny how suggesting that the rich should pay a couple more percent because they owe society more for their wealth makes me a statist who hates capitalism. Way to go, pal. Maybe you should calm down and try to analyze what I'm saying before putting words in my mouth
"Taxes are used for so many things that you enjoy every day"
Buzz! Broken window fallacy:
watch?v=gG3AKoL0vEs
Try again!
"Not paying some money to benefit the community while benefiting from the community is theft"
Since I am FORCED to provide(And often even take) these benefits at the point of a gun, in the way your beloved omnibenevolent gov. bureaucrats think I should, and not the way I see fit, your point remains pretty much moot.
@Akatam0t0ma Taxation is EVIL! The federal government is EVIL! Private property is GOD! Never mind that the land we live on is only ours through the federal government taking it from native americans and mexicans through force. The government sure is bad except when it's the only thing that makes your property even legally yours
Well, I consider taking people's wealth at the point of a gun evil. It's too bad you don't. If you are fine with throwing people into a box if they refuse to abide and even turn them into Swiss cheese should the necessity arise by their resistance to being thrown in a box, you are most welcome to your opinion, but please at least have the decency not to claim that it's not coercive, when it is.
@Akatam0t0ma But the question is, how much of the wealth is actually theirs? If it was purely based on their talent and genius, why does the vast majority of the super rich make their fortunes in industrialized nations? Are you saying that all of the money they accumulate is due entirely to their own effort?
"The government sure is bad except when it's the only thing that makes your property even legally yours"
While I do think there is a good case to be made for a government to defend people's property rights, I don't need a stamp of approval from a government to own anything, let alone to own myself, anymore than I need its stamp of approval to express anything.
Taxation is wrong, I don't see a point in discussing which method is superior. like when it comes to gay marriage, I can't support gay marriage (recognized by the state) since I am against state marriage. This means inequality, but that is not the root of the problem.
@reapfreak State marriages are more convenient in some respects. There aren't a lot of religions that would marry two gay people, so it's nice to have someone who won't discriminate against anybody.
How long it will take for Russia to get to the level of USA in consumption? They have very rich people there investing and consuming and great resources.
@rebelq1 The problem is that they seem to be oblivious or just plain in denial of the fact that the State is the real oppressor and not the entrepeneur. I would imagine that they would attempt to attribute the suffering of N. Korea as the result of evil capitalists somehow puppeteering the State.

thats socialism,,,

Let's review!
During Clinton, we had trillions of dollars in surplus
During Bush, the rich were given tax cuts
Now, we are trillions of dollars in debt.
Can anybody see the problem here?
