What they don't say is that teachers are being imported and Teach for America is full of young students wanting to be teachers to fill up the places of those who are retiring.
In response to JohnLeeMd: It's amusing for anyone who's required health care recently to hear a doctor talk about "budget realities." I've taught high-school iterature for 32 years. Frankly, I don't know what I'm worth monetarily, but I do know that I've impacted many lives in a positive way. I'm sure Dr. Lee has done so as well. If teachers "need to take pay CUTS," as he wrote, can he honestly defend the salaries he and other doctors command? I wonder.
Just wait. As the economy continues to fail, more teachers are losing their job, salaries are frozen, and support services decrease. Class sizes keep increasing. Who will replace those that retire? Who will walk into class sizes of 30 - 40 students without promise of job security, support, and respect? Those that don't need it or can't get it elsewhere.
I don't understand when the shift in society occurred that made teachers the greedy, selfish bad guys? Historically, teaching has always been considered a noble profession - what's our problem in America? Oh, yeah - that's our problem in America. The best response I've heard - "Those who can - do. Those who can do more - teach."
If the children are the future and everyone knows that why would you want the kid who didn't learn anything in highschool become the kid that teaches your child everything. No one else is going to teach the kids so give the teachers something that is motivating instead of intimidating. Children are the future and so are the teachers who shape them.
I myself am currently a highschool student entering my senior year and have thought about this question alot. It's the reason i choose to get a MD.
There are good teachers and there are bad teachers, but it's the ways the public system makes it easy for the bad teachers to stay and makes it hard for the good ones to work. I had an awesome teacher who decided she wasn't going to teach science anymore, mainly because parents got to pissed off about evolution, so she taught us about Bob Dylan and the 60's instead. I probably learned more important stuff for actual life from her, than any other teacher I had. She was fired because of this.
I am stunned that so many people (not those posting here before me) do not realize the value of teachers! These are the people who shape our children's minds! Do you really want the lowest paid, least qualified person to have that impact on your children? The teacher spends more time with your child than YOU do! They deserve to be honored for their service to all of us, and paid accordingly. And NO WAY should they have to pay out of their own pockets for the privilege of teaching our kids!
@a7xfanforeverz No they aren't, given the fact that they've NEVER been paid (according to teachers) what they're worth. AND more importantly, when you consider the number of teachers waiting on the sidelines, even more so (they aren't underpaid). AND not to mention the new budget realities!

"Almost every teacher I know has a 2nd job." -quote from clip
Almost every teacher *I* know (I know hundreds of teachers), less than 5% of them have 2nd jobs.

Teachers are more important than doctors. Without teachers, there's no any doctors today.

Teachers are underpaid. You'd be surprise how much they have to spend on supplies out of their pocket.
