And he told me: When I was younger and 'Nevermind' was released, we used to consider of Nirvana as you do now of Green Day. They were such a great band that they don't belong in any certain "musical" genre, If anything, they were a mix of punk, the catchiness of pop and good ol' classic rock riffs with a touch of metal. You have to admit that Nirvana helped start the 'emo' phase. A lot of people emulated Kurt's image and ways in their bands, and a lot of people tried to write emotional and, for lack of a better word, depressing lyrics so they could be associated with the likes of Nirvana. Obviously there were many other factors that influenced 'emo', but in my humble opionion, Kurt had something to do with it.
