this theme served as a templet for hip hop producers wanting to sample music that was dark and mysterious as a backdrop for their music, for example, east coast hip hop producers in the mid to late 80s and gang of southern hip hop producers all the way in the 90s, along with the triggerman( drag rap) sample.
Back in those days nobody thought of remakes. All the movies were just so original and now it seems like imagination and originality is gone..Something happened after the year 1999-2000...something bad.
@VenomShock I agree, and because you've seen it, you'll always be able to appreciate that element.
Younger audiences will (largely) be unable to connect with that subtlety, and instead find the film confusing, or dull. I guess it's like parents who grew up with "rock" trying to understand why their kids like "rap". But you made a good point, the film has an uneven feel to it, making viewers feel uncomfortable AND immersed. Good call.
This is one of the few Horror movies I could actually see having a successful remake. The camp/cult value wouldn't be there, but I think that the psychological angle could be pretty great if done well. Good casting, a different, but similar plot, and acknowledging, but not trying to duplicate, the original classic would make for a pretty good remake. At least, it'd be interesting. Films that tried to do this with little success: Wizard of Gore My Bloody Valentine, Black Xmas. etc.
@DarkToboki As much as I agree, the fact is that there are very few NEW horror films being green-lighted
in Hollywood. So, the choice between "to remake or not to remake" boils down to the less attractive "to let fade into (further) obscurity, or to remake and reach a new generation of audiences". Original fans will most likely hate it, but at least it'll keep the legacy and the story alive. It's a double-edged sword. Or a double-forked flying sphere.
@gorgeousgambler How about Hollywood just try to make a new horror icon instead of re-hashing or Re-Making these classics that do not need a re-make. That is the main problem I have with Hollywood. Leave the Legend as is and Make something new up!!!
@gorgeousgambler I know The Thing is a Remake and I love it but I should have been more specific and said the Re-Makes are getting way too much and I understand were you come from on the Phantasm ordeal and the people Clamoring. Glad we could have a civil debate and writing : )
It's a foregone conclusion that any attempt to remake this would suck. The same movie companies can't even remake formulaic paint by the numbers movies like Halloween and F13th without fucking them up, so how are they going to remake something as surreal as Phantasm?
I don't know if a remake could be made of this movie. The character development would probably suck, you know deleted to make the movie move faster, not to slow it down. Dawn Of The Dead remake was actually pretty good and that's saying a lot from me. The Fog remake SUCKED. I don't think Rob Zombie could do it, probably be too violent. His first Halloween was good but his second made The Fog remake good. Zombie's Halloween 2 was shit. There's really nothing more to say.
"You play a good game boy, now the game is finished, now you die." In the second that was originally in the first, "when you die you think you go to heaven, you come to uss". I love the old fashion sound effects like the "poof" from the Munsters. The only flaws were the endings, I call them clinchers, that never ended the movie. In 4 I don't know what happened, it was a bit confusing, maybe something was missing, I don't know what. Of course it did not have a clincher but... it ended.
first saw it. Still funny to watch after all these years. And don't forget the characters, Jody, Michael and especially Reggie "this guy's not going to leak over my ice cream is he?" or "we're hot as love you know". In the sequels, he had to have his sex, sometimes hard for him to find. Michael (the McGuiver of the movie, who seemed to had lost it in 3 and 4 unfortunately. And don't forget the tall man before Freddy, Jason, Michael Myers, and Chucky. A villain with very little to say. "BOY"
My second favorite horror movie of all time. Dawn Of The Dead (original), first, and The Fog being my third. I've always loved Phantasm because of the music, (especially that scene where Jody and Reggie are playing the guitars, a very unique scene in a horror movie, today that would be a deleted scene in today's movies like slowing the movie down, let's get the action moving, the characters and the funny moments that weren't meant to be funny (Mike and Jody fight a jacket, ilmao when I
Well... I think I got it. Mike is Slender Man. That means if you want to make a movie about Slender Man you need to use this as a main theme. Or remix it for a main theme.
I didn't care much for the 4th film. It was too far out there for what I was expecting. I liked how "deleted" scenes from the first film were used, though. It brought more insight into Mikey and the Tall Man.
@jimjam3782 Yea I thought 4 was terrible and instead of making an effort for a 4th film he should have made an unedited Phantasm 1 version and put back in all those scenes.
@ThomasAndrewsGal1912 So true. i've been looking for that hip-hop version for the 'longest' and was shocked to hear that it's Doug E. Fresh and the Get Fresh Crew. I should have known that, because here in NY, one of the stations would play that version as the last song of the night! And i have that version, straight from the radio on cassette, somewhere in my apartment. Soon as i find it, watch the 'Tall Man' appear!
I first saw this movie when I was around Mike's age in the film, but now I'm the same age as Jody....interesting how your outlook changes through the years. One thing hasn't changed though...Phantasm is still my favorite all-time horror series, bar none.
@cheapcape Well, the dwarves are made from reanimated corpses, so I think the word fits loosely, at least. And I know that the dwarves don't eat people, but in my circle of trendy idiot friends, the words "eat" and "kill" are used interchangeably sometimes for some reason.
i adore this song it is haunting, chilling, very 70's,epic,catchy,and most of all just the coolest. They dont make themes like these anymore. Awesome film too.
Okay. I see it, I see it all now. What we gotta do is we gotta snag that tall dude and stomp the shit out of him, and we'll find out what the hell is going on up there. Yeah! We lay that sucker out flat and drive a stake right through his Goddamn heart!
You gotta be shittin' me, man! That mother's STRONG!
Anyone know were you can get the original themes from movies like this, and Suspiria, Rosemary's Baby and so on in Good quality!? I always wanted all the original themes to some of my favourite old horror movies.
Fredric Myrow was the composer, he also did the awesome music for 'Rubin and Ed' (1991) with Crispin Glover. I love his stuff, the slightly cheesy early synthesiser sound is so rad...
@lca554 No. He's a being from another dimensoin that takes corpses and makes them into hooded midget slaves ( retarded I know) he also destroys each city he passes through. he uses silver flying balls that have drills, knives lasers etc to kill people.
Great theme and a great flick. Hadn't seen it in 15 years but I picked up Phantasm 2 and had no clue what was going on so I rewatched the first, and am finally got around to restarting the 2nd one tonite. Great movie but doesn't have the charm of the first one but still a great flick no matter what A.Michael Baldwin says.
@MayasMoviebox Phantasm is awesome becaue it was so far below a b movie it ridiculous. The success was so unexpected. One of my faves of all time! Look up Donn Coscarelli or phantasm & read his comments sometime, awesome!
me too! I can watch this movie over and over again and still not get tired of it! I used to work in a Funeral Home so it nothing about death usually scares me but this movie kinda made me jump in a few parts lol and this theme song is awsome :)
Fred Myrow and Malcolm Seagrave did something nobody else could with this score...they did an imitation of "THE EXORCIST'S" theme, which was very popular, but instead of downright copying it, they wrote something new, original, chilling and completely unforgettable. I wore this track out when I owned it on vinyl back in the day.
My brother met Angus Grimm at the Comic-Con a few years back, he asked him if he could say something for him and before he even said what it was Angus said "BOOOOOYYYYY"....
@MechaDestoroyah8 From IMDB: "A young boy and his friends face off against a mysterious grave robber known only as the Tall Man, who keeps a mysterious arsenal of terrible weapons with him."
Just watch it, I don't think you will be disappointed. It's my favorite horror movie of all time :)
Why is there ONE disliker???? it 's obvious that he's the ONLY ONE not to like this masterpiece from one of the best movies ever made!!! what a shame!!
I like how the theme tune is a bit like Suspiria & Halloween - 'All the classic horror films seems to share a certain style when it comes to music.'

@TheGoongala New ideas would be great.
But a bunch of people clamoring for new horror icons and new scares
doesn't create them. I agree completely that this should NOT be remade.
My comment was that it COULD have a successful remake, were it to be remade.
Like "The Thing" (1982), was a successful remake of "The Thing from Another World" (1951).
"Phantasm" could be remade, but I agree, shouldn't be.

One of the best twists in horror movie history.Only the first Friday The 13th had a better twist.

This movie is so weird. It looks like a B-movie, but it can be really disturbing. Pretty underrated, indeed.

@MayasMoviebox Phantasm is awesome becaue it was so far below a b movie it ridiculous. The success was so unexpected. One of my faves of all time! Look up Donn Coscarelli or phantasm & read his comments sometime, awesome!

This movie was verrry odd. Oh, I adored it, but afterward i had to think long and hard about its true message. If there was one.
The music is captivating.
