How is that laughable? The reason you would go on deployment (at least in my country) is to help spread your countries values, such as freedom of speech, liberty from persecution, and other basic human rights that many in other countries weren't privileged to have in the first place. I know I joined the army to protect innocent civilians and their right to voice their opinion! Even though some people are ignorant, they have that right, and I'll fight and die for them to have that right!

If you're in Iraq, you're defending an installed government to keep the oil flowing. When you leave, it will become as corrupt and brutal as it was before. My Uncle served in WWII. He was an engineer. At one point in Germany, his Company was ordered to establish a bridge across a river during winter. When the Commander asked for a volunteer to swim across the frigid river with a rope to start a bridgehead, my Uncle was the one who raised his hand. He earned a medal for that but I forget what it was. I wish I remembered.
I served for 20-years myself.

I love the USA and its people... your Grandfathers brought us peace and freedom to our great country in 1945. Because of them, i had a great life, joined the German Army and fought on your side in Afghanistan. I´m home for good ... and I pray every day for my brothers in arms.

My Uncle served in WWII. He was an engineer. At one point in Germany, his Company was ordered to establish a bridge across a river during winter. When the Commander asked for a volunteer to swim across the frigid river with a rope to start a bridgehead, my Uncle was the one who raised his hand. He earned a medal for that but I forget what it was. I wish I remembered.
I served for 20-years myself.
War is lost on soldiers...all we wish for is peace.

I am glad you are safe Sturmfalke. I served in our military, but the whole time I just hoped everyone I knew would be safe. I wasn't hesitant, I was "Gung-ho" but I always respected life, as all soldiers should.
I have issues...but I deal with them...I am disabled but other people in other places have it worse than I do. I feel lucky.
I got to take part in history, and I did not have to pay for it with my life. How many can say that?

This song is very powerful and very hard to listen to. I first heard it as sung by a young Veteran Warrior at the VA Hospital in Muskogee, OK. It always reminds me of U.S. Marine Medal of Honor recipient; Corporal Jason Dunham. Downrange with 4th Platoon, Co. K, 3rd Battalion, 7th Marine Regiment, 1st Marine Division, I MEF; he covered a grenade with his helmet & body - 04/04/2004 - Husaybah, Iraq. He died 8 days later at Bethesda. He was 23 yrs old. SEMPER FI Corporal.
