1st time ever on an airplane was in 1977 flying Eastern, it was a family trip back to the 'motherland' Puerto Rico! Oh what memories!!! I say motherland bcuz my parents were born there.
And I remember that Carl Icahn was going to bail Eastern Airlines out of it's crushing debt it had back in the 80's. I think Eastern Airlines had so much debt it was about ot liquidate everything it had when Icahn made comments to the fact he was going to purchase the debt and keep the airline flying.
Then..Icahn decided to back out of the deal to buy Eastern. And thus..the rest was history...including Eastern Airlines.
Lo,l at about 8 seconds into the advertisement one of Easterns Employees wearing a Tanish Green Uniform looks like he is wearing an Army uniform from the former Soviet Union!!!!!!!
Imagine that today: employees holding a stake in the company's future, and benefitting from their progress. Seems like a foreign concept in recent labor negotiations...
Once up a good time, Eastern's commercial music was Sea Mist by the Frank Chacksfield Orchestra. It is cue music in the Chappell library. Now all airlines suck. Get frisked by some pervert at the airport. We all should just go their naked and get on the plane.
Lorenzo was the best at ruining large companies for his own benefit. We continue to see it today with the big bankers and Wallstreet scum who steal peoples retirement for their own wealth building. Never has a country been so taken over by the few who now have it all.
The damn UNIONS destroyed this airline!!! Who in their right mind would go out on strike knowing that your biting (and weakening) the hand that ultimately feeds you. UNIONS SUCK!!!!
@jimdep333 Frank Lorenzo & Texas Air deserve more responsibility than the unions. When Lorenzo took over, his job was to kill Eastern and merge its carcass into Continental. Lorenzo even printed CO L-1011 and 757 safety cards and developed new interiors and a new livery (the current CO/UA ones) with the intent of "merging" CO and EA.
Everything was set to go, but a trustee stopped Lorenzo. The damage was done, Eastern died, and the DOT banned Lorenzo from running another airline.
@jimdep333 The Unions fought to save Eastern. 10 years of concessions and Borman blew every dime. The Unions didn't strike. The IAM was LOCKED OFF THE PROPERTY prior to the strike date. Which was illegal under the Railway Labor Act. The Pilots Union and Flight Attendants walked off in support of the IAM and illegal action by Lorenzo. Eastern was placed in bankruptcy to Liquidate it. And build up Continental at Easterns expense. Lorenzo never intended to operate Eastern.
My first flight was an Eastern Airlines L-1011. JFK-SJU. wow this video got me running to my photo album. dang the space in the L-1011 is huge its like a movie theater!
Unfortunately, that's been the case several times over. The same thing happened at United Airlines. Any employee owned stock was wiped out in bankruptcy.
while I miss Eastern Airlines it would be so out of place in an age where airlines are quickly becoming the flying equivalent of Greyhound bus with the charging customers for everything, cramped seats, lack of first class, etc. EAL was an airline that truly defined pre-deregulation air travel.
Just go back a few years and you'll notice something pretty drastic:
USA's pre-AWE buyout config of the 757-200 had like five rows in First. Now: 16 seats. On a nearly 200 person aircraft.
AAL removed two F seats from the -80 and they talked about operating the A300 to San Juan without F, but they used to leave BOS and JFK with 1-2 people in F and overbooked in Y.
I hate the way air travel is going now too. Carter, in my opinion, made a terrible long term mistake.
hi i flown on eastern from bradley airport in windsor locks ct it was back in 1977 when you had meals included and rented a car for 100 bucks a week.. what a difference 30 years makes!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Eastern didn't just go bankrupt. Eastern was put in bankruptcy on purpose to liquidate the company and transfer assets to Continental. The sale of Eastern to Frank Lorenzon was an illegal sale, and the shareholders along with the employees, had a class action Lawsuit against Frank Lorenzo, Frank Borman, and the Eastern Board of Directors. Lorenzo had to liquidate it before the court date for the lawsuit and trial.
Continental strippedEAL of it assets. The rest was liquidated
my first airplane flight many years ago was on Eastern.. and we used to have a saying down south ... when you die and go to Heaven, you have to go through Atlanta first to change planes.
No Freddie, the plane was added later..we were all real EA employees that were chosen went down to MIA around Christmas that year to film a commercial spot for the SuperBowl..several commercials came out of it..this was not the one that aired on Super Bowl Sunday and cost millions. We were each paid one dollar for our time..it took a day or two of retakes to get it right. It was lots of fun and something I will always remember..cool to see myself again in the background...so much for rumors..
I heard that they had to reshoot this commercial because the first run through the plane actually crashed into the crowd of fake employees. A story like that has got to be true.
This is really a great ad. You could substitute the name of almost any company and it would be just as great today. Too bad more companies aren't moving towards employee ownership.
@Brianyankeefan Yep. And he had a leaky space suit. Lost oxygen on the way to the moon. That's why he didn't have a clue how to manage Eastern Airlines... and put them on the path to bankruptcy...
We were the best. It breaks my heart every time I see an Eastern Commercial. I worked for them for years. No one could ever come close to being as great as they were.
Great commercial! I remember first seeing this commercial when I was a teenager. I still get goose-bumps at the end. They had the best marketing in print and on TV.
AWESOME!!! My father was a pilot for eastern from 1967 to 1991, my mother was a FA from 1975 to 1991. I remember the day Eastern went under the rough times we had back then, i was ready to KILL!!! Frank Lorenzo, that Italian greese ball, then my fater started at Delta Airlines in 1993 till 2001 when he finally retired. My mother started at TWA in 1995 till 2000, and now i am carrying the proud onour of aviation in our family as a Delta F/O.
@notredamesux Eastern was put out of business on purpose. To build up Continental Airlines, by transferring Easterns Assets to Continental... Lorenzo wanted to merge Eastern and Continental. Eastern was number 2 in size and Continental number 14. Because Eastern was the dominant carrier, the merged airlines would become one large UNION represented airline. (Continental was non-union, as Lorenzo broke their unions). So, to make a large non-union airline, move assets to Continental.
