  • It has been amazing to watch this ship "live" it's moments throughout the years

  • @mrtrainboy019 it collapsed

  • people will regret not saving these ships, there is nothing really remarkable or worth saving about any of the modern ships, and alot of the newer navy vessels are nuclear/cool stuff is classified which means they'll get recycled instead of preserved (due to safety and security concerns).

  • RIP America!!! :'(

What a beautiful ship she was. Seeing how much she did and then what has become of her today is heartbreaking, :'( but at least she wasn't scrapped. We couldn't save her, but hopefully we can save her sister, SS United States. She is still here and I hope they can make her into a museum so she won't be scrapped.

  • Oh well at least she was on land for a few years. by the way, when is her stern?

  • I save seeing this one for last. America, you will always have my heart. Goodbye, America.

  • This video made me feel very sad :(

  • The last remanet. So touching.

  • poor girl at least she was claimed by the sea not scrapped

  • how sad:( :(

  • This is somehow more depressing than being scrapped. At least then the liner's "recycled" and isn't a complete waste.

  • i was ther like 2 days a go , i got pichers of it naw ! do you wont them?

  • And this is how she is treated?

  • My Dad came to australia on that ship when it was called Australis

  • I went to the Website. Did they drag parts of the ship on shore or are those metal pieces from something else?

  • I'm an ocean liner fan & it's really depressing to see this- the once great "S.S. America"(1940), running mate to the "United States"(1952)- and even more luxurious than her more famous sister. Sadly, also a fitting reflection on the sad state of affairs of this country.

  • Bottom of the Ocean - The best place for it.

  • @neilbee

wish she had died a more peaceful death though, preferably like the Britannic.

  • she was the pride of the USA and know one even remembers her. how upsetting.

  • where did the rest of the ship go

  • The whole wreck is under the water.

  • @rallyman0044 It went to heaven

  • @rallyman0044 rust decay and pressure by oceanic waves

  • she lived and died a lady.

  • Goodbye fare lady, rest in peace. You deserved a better fate than this!

  • This is sad to see the ship this way.

  • First: Don't call her "it", she is a Lady.

Second: She was a warship and did her service as USS West Point . Look at the website mentioned in the video.

Third: "Battle" is meant figuratively. It is the last battle against her complete demise.

  • @explorermagazin It's just a boat, it has no gender.

  • @adzii1 Sorry, we disagree.

    IT ist not a boat.

SHE is a Lady and this has nothing to do with grammar.

  • @explorermagazin thats right she Was beautiful

  • @explorermagazin I agree with you even in my mother language German a ship is always a she, as soon as she has a name. Even if it is a male name like "die(=she) Alexander von Humbold"

  • @explorermagazin damn right!it's a tradition that goes many many years.

  • @explorermagazin Like leaving titanic to go away!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Those old ships are legendary not the crap pieces of metal we have today.

We must preserve them and no letting them go away like that!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • @explorermagazin She mean for things which r not alive

  • @adzii1 In English, ships are referred to the feminine she. In a few other countries such as Germany, they use the masculine 'he'. It's been that way for centuries.

  • that wasn't a warship so how can it be it's last battle?

  • I have a little piece of her...It,s just a rusty little piece of metal to anyone else...but to me it holds fantastic memories.

  • You NEVER rename a ship. Cursed is a ship that is renamed.

The Achille Lauro was also renamed and she was taken by terrorists, burned up, and sank...and all in different incidents.

  • it's just a mith man ... coincidence

  • The Katmai was renamed also

  • 3 things, A.) What's the history on the ship please? I mean no offence, I just don't know what happened.

    and 2nd, what's the music?

    3rd: GREAT clip

    . 5 STARZ

  • wikipedia, read up on it. fantastic history. My grandfather was transported on it during ww2.

  • went there in 2006 surfed there and surprised at how much of it is left was like half of the ship remaining when we saw it

  • sad

  • did anyone die

  • I know the salt and the air erode but I was amazed at how fast this big ship decayed! Just 10 years and it was gone! I think they last longer if they are sitting on the bottom otherwise the Arizona in Pearl Harbor would be gone by now.

  • lol look at the titanic lol 1912 it sunk its still there i think

  • Yes, but the Titanic is underwater, which means it doesn't get so rusty over time. This ship is near the surface and the decay is a lot more! There are actually vases and metals on the bottom of the ocean which are dated B.C. and they are still in perfect condition!

  • Well Titanic is pretty rusted.

  • The Titanic is not too rusted. For metal to get rusty there needs to be oxygen around it. If oxygen comes in contact with the metal, there is a very slow reaction called oxidation. This way the metal turns into rust, which is oxidized metal. The amound of oxygen underwater is very little, so metal takes longer to get oxidized. Physics 101!

  • Ok, she's been underwater for what 97 years. How much rust can you get with that??

  • Actually they are correct, it is rusted, but is by a process of bacteria eating it interestingly enough. If not for this fact, the ship would have been in much greater condition instead of the near ready to collapse (if it hasn't already). That is why much of the brass and other rich metals are still in such fine shape.

  • last time i checked water is h2o, h being hydrogen and the o being OXYGEX, thats chemistry 101

  • H2O has oxygen IN it. The bonds between the oxygen atom and the two hydrogen atoms are quite stronger than you think. It cannot react without help from, say, electricity. H2O actually also has a hydrogen bond between molecules, making it harder to take one molecule and break the bonds in it. Want some scientific facts? The chemical bonds in 1 mole of water are about 700.000 joules strong. That's a lot of energy.

  • Titanic's sistership Britannic is also sunk in the sea of Greece near Kea. The paint of the ship is still on it. In other words it is possible to raise her and fix her again.

  • @Abricialio I think it's too late to rise and fix the hospital ship Britannic, if they rised her now she would turn to sand.if we wanted her to come up without turning to sand we would have to get huge glass boxs to put her wreck in so she doesn't turn to sand when they bring her up.but you can dream about rising Britannic and keep dreaming but it will never come true.

  • @ldrum4 You know what.If people really want and willing to give Billions and i mean BILLIONS OF DOLLARS they can raise even Titanic from 4000 meters.Britannic can be raised, but theres no reason. She is considered a war grave and why???To meet the same fate as SS AMERICAN STAR?

All those great ships that are still afloat should be protected.TODAYS SHIPS ARE NOTHING COMPARED TO THOSE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • @77elvistheking

You can't raise a modern small ship, which is all intact from 4000 meters below. The closest thing they ever managed to raise from the bottom of the sea floor was a sunken Soviet submarine in 1974 with the Hughes Glomar Explorer. That submarine was only 2700 tons heavy and was relatively intact (sunk in 1968).

Raise the Titanic? She would literally fall apart when they try to raise her, in fact she will fall apart in a few years anyway. The rusticles have eaten her away.

  • It hasn't decayed much. It has just fallen below the surface.

  • that sand is weak. CMON SAND PICK HER UP :D

  • Actually it's pretty much in pieces.

  • sad

  • Would have been better if she had been laid up in 1964 rather then sold. Having her Laid up for the last 45 years would be a better fate then this. William Francis Gibbs would cry if he saw this sight

At the very least, she will be remembered, both for her USL service, and her service with Chandris.

And hopefully the SS United States can rise once again to be a source of American Pride once again.

  • I wouldn't count on that....NCL is currently trying to sell her for scrap.

  • So sad...

  • were is this ship?

  • sad yes, looks a bit like its a sinking ship..

  • sad

  • A part of me wants to rest the palm of my hand on the hull of that ship.

  • at 1.34 the water pounding through the holes on ship is an amazing sight

  • Her story would make for a good TV program. Sad she's almost gone - but it's been a rough last few years for her.... RIP American Star.

  • Yes, we made a film, you can get it on the website (address on the right lower side).

The film has also been shown at a convention in the U.S. and they liked it.

If there is any interested TV-channel they can contact us.

  • they shuild of rebult her when she was rusty befor sialing

  • They were tugging her to her final destination when the lines snapped. They weren't sailing her.

  • its cruel to do that to a ship. something that nice should not be put though that!

  • I dont like to see this, it's so sad.. why they dont get him out of the water! im very proud on that ship

  • just to let u know all ships are girls

  • Yeah sorry xD im mean she ;)

  • does anyone know why ships are considered female?

  • I don't actually know, u should ask the same question about cars then too

  • It goes back to the days when a ship was the captain's mistress. A ship, like a lady had to be cared for, and since old sailors believed women on board ships was bad luck, their ship was their lady.

  • Its because ships are objects and way back when so were women. they were called girls because captains owned them like their women. Thats also why countries are called "she"

  • well..if they got it out of the water now..wouldn't be much ..just..what ya see there would be what they get

  • yeah that's true..

  • I have a request, can Explorer Magazine do an article on the SS United States?

  • Hi,

we have already published an article about the big sister - in German.

Unfortunately I cannot send you the link via PN, because you blocked PN from us.

  • Hi, I just changed my email settings. OCuld you try to send the link to me again. Hopefully everything is all right now. Thanks

  • Help save her near sister the SS United States, also know as the BigU.

  • when are you going to visit the wreck next

  • We will visit the wreck in Feb 2009.

  • Mght wanna try that sooner..don't think their will be a ship left by that time by the guess of this video

  • she deserved sooo much better than that after being in service for so many years

  • Thanks for that, it's sad and awesome at the same time to see what's become of "our girl"...

  • At Least they tried to get her preserved, thats all we could have asked for

    Rest in Peace America

Now on to her bigger sister...

  • do you have any pictures of the "American Star" in one piece. or before it ran aground?

  • my dad was one of the people who towed the ship...and he told me all about what happend and he said that one of the towlines broke by a huge wave.r.i.p america:(

  • did anyone notice that the anchor and some of the bollards are still attached to the ship

  • Yes, we have shot some detail photos of the anchor. In our German version of the website (url -> look at the video) we discuss the remains in detail.

    Follow the links

    ->Nachlese 2008

    ->Beobachtungen und Schatzsuche.

    The pictures show some details.

The English version will come soon.

  • next time you visit the site you wouldent mind taking photos of whats sticking up at low tide i want to see if i cAN regognise anything

  • Yes, we have published photos of the the parts sticking up at low tide. Visit the site ... I send you the url via pm.

  • are u kidding me, thats what left of a giant oceon liner?

  • Yes that is the sad truth, we were there in Feb 2008, so the pictures are really current.

We watched her for many years.

  • God bless the SS America, and God bless America, a grest ship that sailed for a great country.

  • what an icon,loved the vessel,,god bless

  • correct she just slowy broke up after about 15 years of pounding waves.

  • very sad to see her in this condition great work!

  • That Huge boat is just that small thing now?

  • araid so it wont be long before whats left finally submerges..
