  • Wow! I had forgotten about this, I am now 55 but as a child, this bloke's films livened up dreary, rainy Sunday afternoons in the Sixties. Takes me back 40 odd years. God bless you George!

  • @walshesco I agree! During the war my Dad was stationed in England from Canada and if I remember correctly, he talked about seeing him perform. A great talent he was, in the vaudeville tradition. We will not see his like again!

  • so bloody brilliant it hurts the brain!!

  • I remember the version done by Herman's Hermits.

  • Good music and awesome entertainment brought me here

  • I remember seeing this live on TV

  • he loooks old and fat here!

  • Frank Skinner brought me here

  • What a genius. He looked a true gentleman. My grandpa says he saw him IN PERSON! JEALOUS!

  • Just after the war we rushed the cinema to "experience" good old George in Bergen

Norway where I lived for my first 36 yrs. And now this from Marktuson123 THANKS A

LOT; George Formby is a live memory to me, and millions of others from the "black and

white"-era. Thanks a lot from Stralsund, Germany (Former GDR)

  • i love george formby and his songs and i really admire his talent and enthusiasm

  • QI made me do it! and im glad it did :)

  • Believe it or not he was a big influence on the Beatles

  • @1960jimmy i agree. he's great! god bless you and family

  • im 13 i love this!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • top man

  • Wish they would have not had the orchestra. Can't even hear the banjolele.

  • @rolflmaoweeee u r a right twat

  • As a Swede i have to ask. His accent? Is it Wigan, Manchester district? Love his accent by the way.

  • @Siriusfanatiker He has a Lancashire accent.

He's from Wigan, but that was back when Lancashire was bigger. Wigan and Liverpool were part of Lancs when he was alive. It was broken into smaller parts in 1974 when Manchester and Merseyside became separate counties.

  • He was not as big as his legacey. A forgotten star.

  • Thank you Mark. This is an important piece of musical history

  • 5' 8" giant then.

  • My Gran nursed him in the last few years of his life.

  • The adults in our household would sing a lot of songs, including this one, when I was toddler....in a village in India, believe it!!

What a marvelous gift is Youtube? Mysterious voices and melodies which I sometimes thought I'd only imagined become real and come to life!

68 years old now, and searching Youtube for memories is my passion.

    Thank you, whoever you are!

  • LOL I've just been watching Homes Under The Hammer and some guy who bought a house sounded like George so much I was nearly wetting myself, coz every time he spoke I just thought he was going to say, 'It's turned out nice again hasn't it'

  • He was five foot eight.

  • @marktuson123

Thanks for that! Now the mystery is solved :)!!

Well for me that is :P

    (i'm atm 5 foot 6 1/2 :P)

  • looking at this formby looked blimmin tall! any idea how tall he was?

  • @BOT101st He must be very tall. Most of the people I know can lean against a lamppost. Not everyone can say that they lean ON a lamppost!

  • @MediaHoax

ahah true! But apparnelty he was 5 foot 8, so 1 half inches taller than me! lol

  • @MediaHoax Depends what school you went to as my mother used to say. leaning on /leaning against... same same as far as I'm concerned. Good old song though.

  • this song my girlfriend loves it her dad sung theres songs in the clubs

  • This i smy fave Formby tune! he looks quite mature here.

  • When was this filmed?

  • @ftsjr It look like the TV special he did in 1960 not long before he died, he was only 56 but looks older.

  • this looks late on in his life

  • herman hermits did a great version!

  • I bet he would be good with an electric guitar.

  • wiganer ftw

  • I used to go to all of the George Formby movies when I was a kid and wondered what ever happened to him. I enjoy seeing and listening to him agaih Jordy697

  • good singer lol!

  • Hes not a singer hes an entertainer and that's what makes music

  • I've always wondered how todays ukulele players judge George Formby as a ukulele player. I he seen as a master of the instrument or just a very good player?

  • @degooser2000 I think he's seen as a very good player. Some of those old jazzy songs he did like Dough-de-oh-dough stand up well today musically.

  • my friend that had a crush on me sang this to me (L) xx love you Joe is you're reading this (:

  • Magic!

  • 1960jimmy no he wasn't people all over the world new who he was lol he had an OBE he was one of the most famous entertainers of his time!!! do some history!

  • Lovely. He was great.

  • You can't really hear the ukulele too well; the backing music's too high... :~(

  • @1960jimmy During his period he was the UK'S top earner, with radio, films and records, He was loved by a nation

  • does your chewing gum lose it's flavour on the bed post overnight

  • is this a mix between a banjo and a uke

  • @qos1310 It is a banjolele with a resonator.

  • That's a Gibson UB-3, not a UB-4. The confusion comes in because a UB-3 can either be this 'big' model or a deluxe Baby Gibson.

This is my all time favourite Formby clip.

  • PURE TALENT

  • Why did he die so young?

  • @HideFromTheSun9313 He was 56. Not young but then again not old either.

  • What a supreme entertainer!

  • In memory of my friends Dad who loved this song. He died yesterday and so I am just watching and listening to the songs he loved in memory of him. RIP Del. xxx

  • My Grandad used to sing this to me.

  • God bless this legend! :D x

  • So endearing.

  • anyone know what year this performance was in ?

  • 1958/9

  • 1961. His last performance, he sadly died shortly after.

  • @19smokey19 He entertained us well in WW 2

  • thats right swing it? it is GEORGE FOREMAN?

  • 5 years ago I stumbled upon Mr. Formby's videos. What an amazing talent that man had! He died when I was 12 years old. Boy how I wish I had the opportunity to meet him in person. Thank God his videos have been passed on to us.

  • HES THE BEST GUY EVER

  • Yeah ... but our George would have knocked Ali out too !!! and then would have stood over him and exclaimed .. " he he ... never touched me" !!!!!

  • George Forman fought Ali and made the grill NOT George Formby, Formby is a Wigan legend.

  • George Formby?............I remember him fighting Muhammad Ali

  • And then he made a grill....lol

  • sard37<typical dumb ass american!

  • whos the American?

  • oooh my favourite :)

  • Of course its George Formby

  • Ok, i take it all back. it might be him!!!

  • Check out the BBC archive if you doubt this is George. It is, sadly he died a short while after this was filmed.

    A true legend.

  • how old was he when he died?

  • Although he looks older in this video. He was just 56 when he died.

  • quite young

  • Crazy - of course its George Formby! As for modern ukelele players check out Mark Walsh - he is brilliant

  • that IS him, no question

  • This aint him, its someone copying him

  • are you sure????? why you say that???????

  • it dont look like him.check his teeth, theres gaps in them.formby didnt have gappy teeth, just big!

check his other vids, it aint him im telling youj.

  • i think you are wrong, remember this a much older george, but interesting theory, but not sure why they'd pretend it was him???,

  • It is George Formby in 1960. He died in March 61 age 56. Damn shame.

  • brillo pads!!!

    "Oh Me Oh My"

  • Why on earth would they have a big band playing along with him like that? Just George and a Uke (mabey a piano) is all the instrumentation needed, the orchestra's seems to be drowning him out.

  • my grandmother dated george formby long long ago, and she also went out with dixie dean of the old everton f.c and she was quite pally with a few of the old school liverpool boys aswell as dating a few of the old wrestlers i.e jackie pallow, les kellet etc, thinking about the stories she told me when i was a nipper she sounds like she was a bit of a slag... my dad told me she was bed ridden for the last twenty years of her life but i also heard she liked it on the kitchen table...

  • ha ha ha ..

  • lol. no wonder she was bed ridden.

  • he was a legand

  • a few weeks after this recording, George sadly passed away.
