  • Because of this I left ken-do quite fast and started Ninjutsu.

Looks not so epic like this old one,but fast, deadly and effective.

Well I should recognize that weapons are modified, even Katana. And after some experience you start to make your own ones,90% of them are hidden in order to kill in one blow.

However....good techs for a fair fight, but not for killing. From my experience real fight takes end in 5 secs in one blow.

  • Amazing kata!

  • Everyones right, the styles are just different. Katori is for the battlefield and very effective, Eishin is about perfection and esthetic beauty, like th o cha no or tea ceremony. The technical ability and focus required is the same for both, one is faster thats all. One point is because Eishin is slower its easier to see mistakes

  • Tenshin Shoden Katori Shinto Ryu Is one of the oldest styles in japan and this is the only considered a national treasure.

  • @Sarva07 & Qnworks : No "fancy" or "entertainement" moves in all iaido katas from what I see and what I know of Katory Shinto Ryu. I think humbly that some moves may look weird vs. other Iaido Ryu because it is designed to fit situations that are not self-explanatory by looking at the kata. You also have to bear in mind that KSR iai & kenjutsu moves are adapted to suit the wearing of an armor (including helmet).

  • Oh, I forgot to mention something to QnWorks. You have the feeling that they are more flying and turning that fighting. It's due to the veeery high level of practice, and the damn speed at which they are executing the various kata. At much lower speed and with all the dead intervals of apprentices, an error from one of the 2 practicer can very easily severe a couple of fingers, or a nose. Trust me, I experienced it.

  • Another point is that giving more energy and tension and propelling than necessary to do the cut toward the end of the cut is a rather sure way to interrupt rythm and be "killed" by your opponent. Same idea regarding zanshin moments after each cut that are here very very short (they are really damn fast!) and focused on the sole adversary (these kata are representing a face to face duel). From your iaido practice or Miyamoto Musachi's book of 5th elements, I think you know what I mean.

  • Lol I am doing Iaido and I have no idea what is this xD

WTF!? Those people were flying and turning more than fighting. And I didn't even see a normal kata in this video. I might be wrong so somebody tell me what this is!

  • @QnWorks it's an art

  • @QnWorks it's Katori Shinto Ryu...it's different from other ryu style cause it was founded over 500 years old, designed for battlefield...I also think that this demo was also more for enterteinment than for real accurate demonstration of the kata

  • @Sarva07 Well I do Muso Jikiden Eishin-ryu so thats why it was so strange to me.

Actually the MJER is for battle too except we don't get to use it. I am not saying that this Katori Shinto Ryu is worse than what I do, but I've seen some pretty strange movements in this video which seemed a bit illogical to me. Not like I am a wise 8 dan master so I can be terribly wrong. Actually when I wrote my first comment a month ago I didn't even knew that so many different type of Iaido exist. Thx for info!

  • @QnWorks well, like i said, some moves were surely for enterteinment...keep it up with laido then! i also would like to practice it someday

  • WOW, I'm so happy I came across this, I practice Kendo and our kata is not done at this velocity. I started Iaido and I'm no where near this, but this is impressive. Is this the same Ryu/style that Sugino Sensei taught and practiced. Katori Shinto Ryu. This Ryu seems (to me in my limited experience) useful in combat concerning BUDO. Anyone have any viable feedback.

  • Kyoso sensei does look a lot like his father.

  • Amazing.

I practice kendo and well, our kata are not done nearly as fast as how they're done here but wow, pretty impressive =)

  • Speed means nothing, patience and practice makes up for precision, the love of the arts and the emotions you put into your sword do the rest! keep practicing, at-least you have a Sensei to help you! ^_^

  • Speed is important. One cut, one kill, and it has to be fast, seeing as it is a life-or-death situation. However, I see your point and I agree with you on the rest. =)

  • I am a little sad. i'd expect Iaijitsu when they took bokens, and finally they didn't show why iaido exist...

  • Interesting demo by my teachers son.

  • wow nice moves with the bokken.

  • 天真正伝香取神道流。

  • is amazing how kyoso sensei look so much like his father

  • yes, but there are some slight differences...

very good video by the way

  • I know the Asian fellow is Otake Risuke Senseis son Kyoso, but who is the western guy?

  • Check your monitor (or your eyes) the other guy is Japanese.

  • kyoso and Arano sensei, a skilled very old student of Otake sensei.
