  • Why would someone use Quark over Indesign or something? I've only heard of this program recently and I don't really know what it has to offer. Their site is confusing and doesn't really show what it is.

  • Great tutorial Dave. BTW what is the name of the track in the intro?

  • @PhilipOConnell Tour Bus, it is an Apple Loop.

  • I've just got into Quark but I have to say that cheaper programs like Pageplus are better for less than a hundred quid. Quark can't even do a basic command like stroking text or bulleted lists. They've added all these fancy interactive commands to the program that are not needed if you are only doing DTP work. If I wanted to do Flash films I'd have bought Flash. Not worth £919 at all.

  • @airscrew1 Good point, it is expensive. Even something like Apple Pages can do a lot now, if you don't need the advanced features of Quark Xpress.

  • Quarkexpress is good, but in my opion its a bit awkward, whereas Indesign has more punch and seems more intuitive to use.

Although I use both programmes Indesign would be my first port of call.

Would like to hear more comments from people who have used both programmes.

  • Stupidity hurts ? Hm, I surely hope so, although much screaming would be heard all over this page, and not only.

So stop comparing apples and cows. Quark is NOT a photo editing program, nor an illustrator competitor. The only program in the same cathegory is InDesign.

  • QuarkXPress is still the industry standard. InDesign is becoming more popular and you shouldn't use photoshop and illustrator for page layout that's what these programs are for.

  • Sorry, Adobe InDesign has now surpassed QX as the industry standard. I'm a freelance art director (advertising) and NO agency in NYC uses QX any longer.

  • this guy is going on about a simple rotate feature. it's taken Quark 8 attempts to allow free control over rotating images. this program is really out of date, InDesign is much much better

  • i think this program is a waste of time personally u can do 10X the amount of stuff on photoshop and illustraitor wuts the point???

  • This is not a photo manipulator nor a painter program.

This is used by newspaper editors but especially book editors.

It has a completely different function than Photoshop, so don't even think about comparing.

  • Photoshop is for editing images that are pixel based and illustrator is for vector images. QuarkXpress and InDesign (better)are layout programs, so you create the elements of your projects in photoshop or illustraitor then place them into your layout document in a layout editing program.

  • im using xp. can i run this software on my computer?

    Thanks

  • yes u can run it on windows xp

altough I like Adobe Illustrator more

    in my opinion

I dont Know which one is better though

  • Quark is not for image editing. It's for people who edit books, make newspapers, or catalogs.

It's got just as much to do with image editing as Microsoft Word.

  • Yes.

  • Odd. I am learning of this program before I apply for an internship...is this program comparable to Indesign or illustrator?

  • it's almost the same as Indesign

  • just better, in my opinion it has cool features like a bezier pen tool and vector graphics

  • forget learning how to use quark, InDesign is so much better. Illustrator is a must program to learn.

  • not exactly sure what this program is meant for, but the rotate isn't exactly a new feature and I'm surprised it wouldn't have been in the previous versions,

by the way, you wouldn't happen to be doing a review on the new macbooks coming out?
