  • @iKhan209

I agree, Linux still has a long way to go in the user-friendly department.

That's why I just use Linux for downloading lol I just happened to know how to use Linux and Unix because of my educational background. But for the average folk, linux is difficult to use.

    My main PC runs windows.

  • Windows 7 is a pretty impressive OS with compatibility with the majority of software but since Ubuntu is free, it wins.

  • Hey! linuxowns has the same monitor as me!!!!!

  • What's happening to Windows? It's slowing down... What's happening to Ubuntu? It's getting faster and faster :D

  • NO, with good hardware like I have, the boot-up of win7 is faster but slower than ubuntu BUT at both OS' I can start-up any program directly, just depends on the computer =)

  • 10th Ubuntu rox!

  • u had to select windows seven which took 2 seconds it was actually winndows32secs

  • wtf the music ruined the ubuntu startup sound that played at the ubuntu 9.04 boot i wish utube made as option to diable music only

  • my win7 x64 is much faster than my ubuntu 10.04 x64!

  • hey man you got no timer like the last dude, i got a slow attention span man i lost track at a minute and 5 in the video!!

    what's packard bell?

  • if you know oh no doubt that Linux is for advanced users while Windows is for users in its infancy. LINUX IS BETTER THAN WINDOWS

  • You compared a beta (Windows 7) to a full OS (Ubuntu 9.04) Seems a bit unfair.

  • @DarthCaboose2321

You compared a free opensource program vs a trillion billion gazillion dollar program.

  • @BleedingSunday

So but wait a minute Windows 7 Ultimate only costs $200 at Tiger Direct not a gazillion dollars.

You don't compare a BETA to a RELEASED OS.

  • @DarthCaboose2321

    Look up sarcasm please.

  • what is the name of the song please

  • ssd!

  • we are not blind u now

    when u select os ..

    it says

    WIndows Vista(loader)

Dam u .....U make windows look bad

  • @obamacansaveus it says that cause its the same boot loader educate yourelf.

  • I do not like the way linux loads.

  • my asus computer boots in 8 sec with widows 7

  • There is no way your computer can boot in 8 seconds! Windows 7 is slower than XP. I have tried both operating systems and switched back to XP, because its faster. Although Windows 7 does have some cool features.

  • ann030.....:

make a search on google with : windows 7 boot time record

Actually the boot time record is 12 seconds. For sure, 8 seconds is hard to believe, but in 12 seconds it's possible. On my computer W7 boots in 16 seconds, I disabled unused services that are enabled by default, like I also did with ubuntu, that's all. Also if you have an antivirus, it will be slower. It's not fair to compare ubuntu where a lot of services are missing compared to W7 where all services are enabled by default

  • Sorry, the boot time record is 11 seconds, not 12 :p

  • @Windurster for the entire Linux world is hard because they do not know to use Windows 7 is nothing more beautiful

  • From the screen saver maybe.

  • i have the same bug win it start in windows 7

  • lol my windows 7 takes exactly 14 seconds to get to login screen because i took of the GUI boot

  • Asus Expressgate destroys all boot times :D

  • lol did you make the music with modplug tracker? it you did then you're rly good :-)

  • Good video! However, I have a couple of criticisms:

    1) Comparing 2 operating systems from dual boot configuration introduces bias. Due to hard drive physics, all partitions have different transfer speeds. This will give unfair advantage to the OS located on faster partition.

    2) Measuring time to desktop (rather than to login screen) would be much more meaningful.

  • @darthirakli I don't think partition should be considered as Linux has its own type (ext3.ext4) and Windows uses NTFS. So it goes together with the os kinda. But yeah agree with the other things =)

  • @darthirakli also about the Boot drive if its ssd or hdd what rpm and what port (SATA,PATA)

  • I like the dumbass comment that my48yr8 left lol I have windows 7 and use Ubuntu 9.10. Windows 7 is stupid its the exact same thing as Vista but polished which is dumb to pay for full price that's like a slap in the face for anyone that buys it.

  • yea they should say that everybody who has vista should get a free upgrade.

  • If you're a student(or know one) you get get W7 for 50 euros.

  • And that's even better now with 9.10 !!

  • wait ...9.10 is coming!!!

  • for dual boot, you just install a software named grub into the MBR to select te OS, nothing that make your computer slower to boot. compiz+fusion (you don't even know the name, to say a thing about linux..) won't let you get tired, and where in the hell you need plugins to everything you do? Maybe your talking about the video card drive, but it's better than having 300mb of driver software for your card to work well on win.. And no, we don't give a shit about winblows 7.

  • argh...my xp takes 48 seconds to login screen

  • your whole computer is too slow ! i cant believe that really !

my system takes exactly 17 seconds to get me to the actual desktop ! i am using kde 4 btw

  • pack-hard bell... says it all

  • well, it's not everybody who can afford a really fast computer..

  • It takes my computer 34 seconds to get to the actual desktop O_o

  • What is the thing ur choosing in the start? youre pressing enter to something?

  • he's just selecting the os to boot from the grub loader

  • Hack the planet - Hack the planet!!!

  • Linux 4 Ever!

  • I don't like those tests so much, even if GNU/Linux wins, expecially if you measure only until the Login screen. The fact is that when Windows (every version) shows the Login screen, it has only loaded the minimum to stay alive. *nix instead, loads everything at the boot time, and after the login has only to load the personal user settings and programs. I would like to see a test that covers anythink from boot to use to shutdown. :-)

  • ... have a look at the ssd hard-drives reviews, they look really good on both linux & windows.

As for a preference towards GNU Linux; It's by the people for the people. Windows is a product of commercial society, it's a choice not preference. Enjoy what you got! Get what you paid for!

  • Windows fail :P

  • If you haven't read the comments below yet, I do use compiz in Ubuntu, and I don't really care about how your compiz configurations compare to the other ones on youtube.

  • Chill out... there is no need to use such language just because you don't know what "bells and whistles" mean. Log on to wikipedia or something if you want the definition.

  • Many hate it? Do you have any evidence to back that up? With the A-patch mod and messenger plus addon, I've got myself an ad-free windows live messenger with all the bells and whistles I like. Don't start calling me a "windows dog" or "Mac sheep" and tell me to open my eyes to Linux like all the fanatics out there. I have been using several distros like Ubuntu, Fedora and Puppy Linux.

  • song is?

  • when i say i want msn i want it as in WLM (windows live messenger). none of that aMsn, emesene, pidgin bullshit

  • I dont get why you all care about boot time, just because something boots up faster it doesn't mean it can outperform the slower booting one

  • you should really try ubuntu or a mainstrean linux distro.

  • yeah i have. doesnt have the thing i want like msn and i dont really like installing things with wine. plus the no wireless internet. if it had the things i needed i would definately stick to linux

  • Pidgin come with most linux distro and it has MSN support as well as aim googletalk and a bunch more. There are many linux programs that work just as well as windows so I don't even use WINE. What do you mean no wireless internet? My brother got online with his laptop using ubuntu in minutes.

  • yeah but compatibility issues etc. btw im using ubuntu again :)

  • You are now retarded. Thank you for playing.. Wireless internet works fine.. your just to much of a dumbfuck to use it

  • i have compatibility issues with linux you dumb fuck thats why my wireless doesnt work

  • Hey, chav, why not run back to your bloated insecure o/s and let the people who want to use linux enjoy it? You're about as bad those yank religious nuts who need to force their opinion on everyone else. You aren't going to 'convert' anyone here or make anyone cry, they're just going to laugh at you (for not being able to get wireless working for one)

  • agree...especially people like me never turn off computer. Ubuntu 9.04 is pretty amazing! much stabler and faster than version 8.

  • Kid. Linux Pwns Winblow so hard it will make your head spin

  • dont use an OS for the features it has, use it for what you need.

  • I would say the same thing when buying a computer. Don't go for the most expensive one, go for the one you need. You'll use the extra money when you want to upgrade (parts will be cheaper anyway).

  • yeah, most people here only use linux to look smart and have desktop effects

  • @chatpiecewrstbestman urm, surely the features it has ARE what you need?

  • im not saying that i had to restart ubuntu every hour its just always such a big fuss, it seems like this. and im not talking about the movie itself, but look at the comments. ppl fight about what os boots faster like their lives depend on it lol.

  • kinda stupid video..installed win 7 on a 1,4ghz duron with 384 mb of ram and it booted faster..,it could even be used pretty well

  • can I make some coffee while the windows boot up?

  • btw good music taste ^^ The Knife is great, and Silent Shout is awesome ;)

  • u talk like it matters so much im starting to think u have to restart ubuntu every hour so its important how fast its back on. im using vista for 2 years, had to restart it like 3 times after format when installing drivers and few other times on random events. NEVER had a crash, or bsod or hang or anything.

  • maybe your blue BSOD hac change to colourful colour..

    hehe ;P

  • If you had to restart ubuntu every hour... you are doing something TERRIBLY wrong. I have Ubuntu Server which runs 6.06 for ~3 years without single restart.

  • whats the difference if the pc boots in 5 10 or 86,43 seconds? when i come home from work, i turn my pc on, and the pc stays on untill i go to sleep, no matter if i use it or not in the meantime.

  • Ubuntu is more fast than Windows but Windows have more experience in Operating Systems. Windows can get all the applications in the World of Computers.

  • Just because Windows have the money, but Ubuntu have the Operative System! Fedora ext04 is way better!

  • كيف تقارن نسخة بيتا بنسخة كاملة ؟

  • this result don't need to proof

    linux is the power

  • I have gotten Ubuntu 9.04 to boot a lot faster than that more like 10 seconds.

  • I'd like to note that boot time has no effect on actual speed. ideally, you should keep your computer on an Uninterpretable Power Supply, one that shuts the computer off if it detects the power is out, otherwise I wouldn't recommend restarting, except to update, or force the files written in the journal to be properly saved.

  • what's the name of the song?

  • The Knife - Silent Shout

  • This test is clear, but I'd like to see one that starts from grub and finish with the "real" operativity... I don't know Windows 7, but with Vista I gotta wait, after login, other ~30 seconds to really use it.

  • It's still the same for Windows 7.

After login it takes about 20-30 seconds before you can actually start using apps without lag.

In Ubuntu Jaunty it takes around 5 seconds.

  • dont know what your tlaking about takes me about 8 seconds if not less for my win 7 RC to let me use itt without lag .. but then again i clean out my system and use msconfig so i guess thats kinda like cheating

  • @fapo8 because you dont do disk cleanup or disk defragmenter and its taking a long time to start up because it needs to sort through all that junk

  • uso ambos sistemas y estan, ambos tienen lo suyo super xvre el ubuntu, y bueno windows con esta version si que mejor mucho mas fluible,salu2.

  • Y cuales son los tiempos, guey?

  • My boot time results from my Acer Aspire 5720Z Laptop: - Windows 7 = 19 seconds - Ubuntu 9.04 = 23 seconds - Ubuntu 8.10 = 27 seconds - Windows Vista = 39 seconds

All of those four Operating Systems are on my computer :) Timed from selection from GRUB to the login screen.

  • Oh, BTW, i was using Build 7000, for Windows 7, as-well =) As i still need to back up data until i go to 7100.

  • I have now update to the RC and speeds are still the same, if not slightly slower.

  • EXT4 seriously improves your boot time.

If you aren't using it, it might help speed things up.

  • my boot time was 47 secs

  • that pc has issues lol my e8400 c2d @ 3ghz with 4gb of ram ddr2 667 does about 19 seconds bootin windows 7 and i have an old ide drive

  • Use sleep in windows 7 and then test boot times ;)

  • lol? These are for cold boots. Other OS'es can hibernate and sleep too you know.

  • thats 1 crappy PC i boot 20 sec on my notebook.... lol

    upgrade ur hardware bro

  • My netbook also boots faster than my my desktop.

While the netbook is seriously underpowered compared to the desktop.

  • I noticed there was an error on your ubuntu boot with device timeout or some description which may have warped it

  • yawn while windows 7 boots

  • should we wait about 10 seconds to überness (Windows 7) the answer is ttruly yes!

  • dude... packard bell? Didn't they go broke back in '96?

  • Dude, the Release Canidate is out on the torrents. Build 7100. TecHnet subscribers get it last week. :)

  • Are you implying I should download it illegally?

    I wont.

  • cool song & nice os vs :D

  • No but the public RC is April 30th!

  • ubuntu 9.04 is more stable than 8.10 ... it worth to upgrade, many improvments that including boot time,oh and,not on all the boot time is same,my windows 7 boots faster than ubuntu 9.04 with only 2 seconds ...

  • 9.04 as of right now isn't that stable at all. it's still VERY buggy and still has problems. it's ridculious they even released it knowing how many bugs are in it.

but it is a very wonderful upgrade.

    =]

  • I've installed Ubuntu Jaunty 9.04 on several machines here, can't say I've seen any obvious bugs or problems. Seems very stable as well.

Its a definite improvement on Intrepid 8.10 as far as supporting hardware out of the box I've found.

  • I`m running 8.04lts on ReiserFS, but noticed Reiser4 is out now as well ext4, .I`m thinking about upgrading to 9.04 but dunno if I should change the filesystem or just wait till they mature a little more.

  • ext4 filesystem is pretty stable (didn't have any problem with it and none as far as i know reported, except a bug when updating from beta to RC without doing fresh install though still no problems) and also it greatly increases performance and boot speed (around 10sec faster than with ext3). Reiser4 is not yet an option when choosing FS in ubuntu

  • I wonder if ReiserFS is still be developed, and is there much of a future in using it?

Seen has Hans Reiser is now in jail for murdering his wife. Also Namesys, Hans Reiser's company appears to be off-line.

  • What filesystem are you using with Ubuntu?

  • ext4
