@MrTrip3ace I got rid of this car 3 years ago buddy. Are you one of those Americans who has never been to Europe, never driven a decent car on decent roads and probably drives an automatic too so doesn't really know what a decent car is? Probably.
I have a 1981 Oldsmobile 98 Diesel and I am getting 28-31 mpg driving on the freeway at 65 mph.
Remember this is a huge, old 31-year old technology, car. Today's best big cars, or even cars like the Toyota Avalon are still getting the same as a 31 year old car.
@01fastrace In the states they are, because fuel is 3 times cheaper than it is elsewhere. You can still get big, economical cars too. BMW engine efficiency technology is amazing, The big 3.0 litre V6 diesel does 0-60 in 6.0 seconds and still manages 55 MPG, Range Rover Evoque does 64 MPG, New Kia Rio does 94 MPG! There are some amazingly economical cars over here.
@Rone170 Yea unfortunately that one will set you back around $65,000 USD though! Amazingly though, all 1100 odd sold out straight away, despite the price! This car appeals to a lot of people.
accidents happen everyday. the average person has at least one accident. so if you were to choose to be in a sub compact or mid sized car i would choose a mid size car anyday because accidents happen everyday. And just because your car has less mass dosent mean anything when a truck traveling even at 35 mph rear ends you, ur less mass means nothing but a time of death and the 20 bucks you saved in gas.
@Rone170 I disagree entirely. Europe has much more strict safety regulations than in the USA. After all, our cars are much smaller so they have to be! I've crashed 2 small cars with no injuries, my mate has crashed several, including 3 which he rolled. He also hit a tree at 80 MPH and walked away without a scratch, and that was in a 2 star safety rated car. Did you know only 135 people are killed on UK Motorways (highways) every year compared to some 30,000 to 50,000 in the US?
@D41H4T5U I kinda agree with you on the accidents, here in america there are more deer than ppl well where um from anyways and drunks and new drivers texting and changing the radio station. I see this all the time along with our street racers doing 80-150 mph on roads that have more potholes then hair on my head. if all of those circumstances were reduced 99% then yes i may buy a compact and enjoy the mpgs.
@Rone170 Well why not buy a fast compact then? e.g. my Fiat 500 Abarth. Only a 1.4 litre but it has 170 BHP which is a lot for a small car! 0-60 in 6.8 seconds and 137 MPH top speed, 30 to 50 MPG. Lets not forget the handling, which in a short wheel based, light car is excellent too. I live in rural North Wales, the roads are empty and all the car mags use them to test cars here for that reason, and the fact that they are challenging. Watch some of my vids and you'll see exactly what i mean.
@D41H4T5U Everyone has different opinions on what they like, I personally would never drive the car, but if you like the car I respect your opinion. But most people cant accept horsepower over mpgs. Let me give an example... when i was wrecked my car (fuckin deer) i got a economical car, yeah i got excellent mpgs but the damn thing wouldnt get out of its own way 0-60 in 12 seconds. And living in the Mountains dont help. Horsepower over mpgs any day!!
@Rone170 I doubt you'd say that if your fuel was $10 a gallon! Why not have both anyway? Range Rover Evoque does 64 MPG, Jaguar XF has nearly 300 HP but still does 55 MPG, Caterham R500 does 0-60 in 2.8 seconds and can still return 40 MPG! But some cars as you say are pretty slow. The new Kia Rio does an amazing 94 MPG but does 0-60 in 15 seconds.
@D41H4T5U but where um coming from 20,000 usd is about the price i would pay for something. not saying those cars are bad but i dont believe in buying a moving house. If you have the money to buy a 50,000- 80,000 dollar car why would you car about gas mileage??
@Rone170 From my experience, American cars are cheap for a reason. They don't have a "prestige" brand, even their "Sports" cars (Vette's, Vipers etc) are built like rent cars and have very old engineering/technology, which, as fairly stated, is why they are cheap! That's why i like European cars, 100's of brands to choose from, from the very cheap, to the very expensive, the damn right fast to the super Economical, the choice is yours. In the US, it's like here's you truck with an auto tranny.
@D41H4T5U I do have to agree with the outdated technology like the push rods instead of an over head cam. I personally dont care for american unless it has a import motor.I own a 02 chrysler with a 6g72 mitisubishi motor. And you get a little more options then heres your truck with an automatic but i get your point. I personally would perfer a evo. not to bad on gas and plenty of power and roomy. And one more thing have you been in a accident with compact. the outcome aint worth the mpgs.
@Rone170 How can you just generalize like that? There are so many factors and circumstances involved with accidents, it's impossible to make a statement like that. Doesn't stop people riding bikes now does it? And as it happens, small cars can often be safer as they are carrying less mass so the energy levels involved in accidents is lower, so there is a lower risk of injury. My car got 5 out of 5 stars for safety, I've seen one that rolled several times, only a few dents in the roof!
@FreePizza007 Really? It looks better in the metal, otherwise 5,000,000 people wouldn't have bought one. If you want ugly go and look at almost every American car, Old Mustang being the only exception!
the vw bug can get 80 mpg at a contant 40 mph so cars today mostlikely do the same. the mpg lable is a standard of acceleraton tests in real- theoretical world analisis. so over all it would max get 28 mpg standard deviation.
@fatqwert200 The least this car would do is around 60 to 65 UK MPG, it's very economical! The new Kia Rio has a 1.1 TD engine and should do close to 100 MPG when it's released next month!
@D41H4T5U Sure I did...what does it have to do with my statement?...if your using an imperial gallon of gas you will have higher fuel mileage per gallon even as your video states the same. It says "82mpg using an imperial gallon is equal to 68mpg using a US gallon". Maybe you misunderstood my comment. The reason this is true is because a US gallon is aprox 1 liter of fuel less than an Imperial gallon, thus more fuel more miles, still your MPG is great worthy of taking notice of.
sorry ...think my original comment was meant for 3075067 as they did not understanding the difference between an Imperial Gallon and a US gallon being different quantities of fuel, but may have used the general comment area by mistake.
I'm in Australia,and own a 1996 mitsubishi Lancer coupe,standard,with the 1.5 litre engine,5 speed manual...combination city/country driving I get around 38-40 mpg(imperial),just country/long distance driving I get up to 46-48 mpg,depending on how I drive.
@gadgetguy4000 UK gallons as stated about half way through the video. I think it's 68 MPG if you convert it to US gallons so pretty close to yours i guess.
@D41H4T5U :O thats still very impressive! do you run premium regular etc thorugh your car? Cause if you run regular than you should try premium thatl boost it to like 85 or something..,
@gadgetguy4000 Well i don't own this car anymore, but always ran it on regular diesel. Got a Fiat 500 Abarth now, best i've had from that is 46 MPG over a tank, but that's a performance car really so not expecting much!
@zamamattiolo Simple lies. Fiat own Ferrari, Alfa, Masserati, Lancia, Chrysler as well as many others. Thier engine technology always wins awards. Did you think before you wrote what you did?
well i did own fiat, seat, renault, peugeot, citroen, audi, VW, and alpha romeo... i kinda know a bit about european cars. i said Fiat has improved a lot, but still have problems here and there, more often than seat or others. But they are easy to work on. Alpha Romeo use to be really fragile too, they improved since. VW owns Seat and the parts quality is really different. So you trying to explain to me that they make a Fiat with the same technology than a Ferrari or Masserati? HAHAA you funny
@D41H4T5U the price of a fiat is the price of a engine ferrari check before it comes out of the line. i like fiat, but owning other companies has nothing to do with their quality. if you go to europe you ll see a lot of fiat in junk yards. there is a reason. i live now in US and drive different cars or trucks, les mpg more power, big engine. my gas budget went triple. and i love it. thanks for your posting.
@D41H4T5U i forgot to tell u : common fiat problems over the years were over heating up hill, bearing, some models had lot of recalls on engine. but dont worry they improved a lot since. ;)
@D41H4T5U and my last question is : what was the RPM and speed when u did 82 MPG... i can get my V8 to do the same if i stay at 1500 RPM.. LOL usually the multijet turn around 40 - 50 MPG.
Jeremy Clarkson averaged 68 MPG in a turbo diesel Jag on Top Gear. 750+ MPG on one tank from Germany to Northwest England. Now that's amazing. Oh, he got that driving an average of 78 MPH attempting to kill the car near his hometown and no finish the race.
this is actually believable. They got 68MPG from a turbo diesel Jag on top gear. Hey averaged 78 MPH for 3/4 of the trip to attempt to kill the car in his hometown but instead made an entire 750+mile trip from mainland Europe(Germany I think) to Northwest England.cool shit
Very impressive. Americans want air conditioning, good acceleration, a larger car, and they like to drive 75 mph though. My Pruis gets 50 mpg and is much larger and capable of really good acceleration if you use the power button. Something like that is more popular with Americans although I like these little cars myself too. In the US, diesel fuel is about 10% more expensive so that's a factor too. I can't say for certain why these little diesel cars haven't caught on, but I think it is size.
@dkw12002 Don't be fooled. This car would happily cruise at 112 MPH all day. Remember Europe has been making small cars for decades so they are very good at it now! My current car does 0-60 in 6.9 secs and 40 MPG which is not bad for a small engined car! Oh and fuel here is probably 100% more expensive than fuel in the US so think yourself lucky!
@D41H4T5U These are not available in the US for a reason. People here want suvs, trucks, larger cars for the most part. I agree this is a very nice small car. The small car we see most of around here are Mini Coopers. Ford Fiesta, VW Jetta diesel, among several others all got great mileage even 30 years ago, but as time went on, the cars got bigger and the mileage went down. Americans are just not happy with cars that small yet. Gas is still far too cheap.
@dkw12002 Europe has higher emissions standards, tougher safety regs and produces almost twice as many cars as the US does every year. But for some reason, most Americans think they need a large vehicle. I've lived in the US for 10 weeks all told and most of the SUV's and large cars i saw had 1 person in. It seems a waste that a 4 litre car only carries 1 person most of the time, where' as a smaller car would be better suited for one person. My other car has a 0.7 litre engine!
@D41H4T5U That's true and sales volume is the key. The profit margin on smaller cars does not encourage manufacturers to produce them knowing sales will be low. Once a small car does catch on, they "improve" it with value-added design and equip. Anyway the problem is not going away any time soon. As soon as gas prices head upward, the truck and suv manufacturers advertise big price cuts. Sustained higher gas prices would change that though. The Model T used ethanol until gas became cheap.
@dkw12002 Well as you probably know, fuel here is already $10 a UK gallon, so small cars have always been more popular. 60% of all new cars sold here are diesel due to extra economy. The new Jaguar XF has a 3.0 V6 diesel and yet will still do 52 MPG and 0-60 in 5.9 seconds! Take a peek at my channel page, you see the Fiat 500? Well that's my car and that's starting to be sold in the USA this year, do you think it will catch on as an "economy car"?
@D41H4T5U I really like the Fiat 500. It might catch on if we get more Fiat dealerships or Chrysler makes a comeback and sells them through their dealerships. I see there is a Fiat Dealership in San Antonio. Yes, I would buy one of these (in red). I just hope they don't alter the design for the US market.
@dkw12002 Well Fiat bailed Chrysler out as you know so they will probably sell the Fiats through Chrysler dealers. Fiat also own Ferrari, Maserati, Alfa Romeo, Abarth, Lancia and a few more! It's a shame they won't be selling the diesel there, it's the same engine that was in my old car, in the video above, so that would have been the most economical choice. Mine is the Abarth version with 160/170 BHP which is very quick for a 1.4 litre! They have altered the design somewhat for the US market
@D41H4T5U There is no mention of mpg. Of course it will be good, but I think around 40 mpg tops. We have 10% alcohol in all our fuel here and the Cruze with a 1.4 L engine and an eco button is expected to get 40. My experience is that if the manufacturer says 40, you get about 37. IF the Fiat 500 gets under 37 mpg, then I don't think it will do as well. If I were marketing the car, I would reduce the engine size and shoot for 50 mpg. There are just too many small cars getting similar mileage.
@dkw12002 You're right that usually the manufactures MPG figures are optimistic (i appreciate the tests are different in the US) however the car in the video was supposed to do 76 MPG, i got 82 so it can be done! Fuel here is much more refined too, hence why the emissions are 3 to 5 times lower than in the US. Most people buy fuel with a research octane number (RON) of 97 to 100, but in the US, i believe they regularly use 87? This is why performance figures are often lower in the US too
@D41H4T5U People (not you) often give optimistic numbers for their fuel economy too. With Prius, the readout is electronic so you don't have to measure it by filling the tank. I had to laugh at one guy on YouTube who was touting acetone as a fuel additive. He drove 45 miles, then topped his fuel tank off and used that vol. of gas to determine his fuel consumption never understanding that the amount of gas to fill a tank is arbitrary. Smart Cars are the other little car we see more and more of.
@dkw12002 I always calculate mine by using a full tank, it's the only way to get accurate info. Admittedly the readout on the cars computer is around 2 to 3 MPG optimistic, but after around 300+ miles, it becomes 95% accurate. I have worked this out over the years when brimming the tank. Smart cars? Never been a fan of them really, don't mind the roadster and coupe versions as they look quite sporty but still do 50+ MPG, but i think you only get the roller skate look a like in the US don't you?
@D41H4T5U Yes, the roller skate version, good description. Here they get well under 50 mpg though. The public utility uses Smart Cars for some employees because they are efficient. The mini Cooper is more sports car looking for sure. I have owned a lot of small cars over the years. In Germany, I drove an Audi 80 that was a fine little car. I owned several VWs, and even a Ford Fiesta in 1979 which was a good little car (for the money). The worst car I have ever owned was a Corvette (1978).
nice trick,,,, I have a VR6 Corrado that got 3 l/100km... all you gotta do is do highway speeds put the clutch in, reset the mfa and wait for the mfa to register again.
nice trick,,,, I have a VR6 Corrado that got 3 l/100km... all you gotta do is do highway speeds put the clutch in, reset the mfa and wait for the mfa to register again.
@CemetaryGatesML It seems the Jetta is the obvious choice that side of the pond. You don't really get any small cars over there do you? Fuel has always been more expensive in Europe, hence the economical cars! Fiat have just launched a 2 cylinder engine, less that 1.0 litre in size but turbocharged so the performance isn't poor. Very economical, emits 3 to 5 times less C02 than a Hummer!
@D41H4T5U in north america...we do get some small cars like compacts that get relitivly good milage...say 20 city and 30 hwy stats like that... problem is, is that we also gotta deal with heavy snow whit makes larger vehicles usefull.
@CemetaryGatesML Well yea, but small cars in America are different to small cars in Europe! We have cars that can do 80 to 126 MPG. As for snow, Europe gets a lot more than the US, in what way are larger cars better in the snow? Smaller cars are better in the snow (talking from experiance) first of all they are lighter, help going up hills, and coming down them as you don't need to brake, secondly they have narrower tyres helping to cut through the snow etc.
@D41H4T5U i know small cars in europe are diffrent, because over their ur gas prices are HUGE!. taken from expiriance small cars dont do well in snow ( not sure how much snow you get, but im far north in canada)
i find that lower small cars just simply have a gard time driving through tall snow and hills...a 4x4 simply does it best here. narrow tires do help, but you need snow tires to get anywere. i cant tell you how many people i see stuck on the hills cuz their in small cars or RWD cars
@CemetaryGatesML Well yea, 4x4 is always best in snow. We don't get a lot, 4 inches maybe, but i've never been stuck in any of my cars all of which have been small, and there are a lot of hills here too. Maybe i've just been lucky! There are not many economical 4x4's here, Fiat Panda does 64 MPG, good for a 4x4, New Kia Sportage does 55 MPG, Daihatsu Terios does 43 MPG, they are probably thes most economical versions of 4x4 here.
@CemetaryGatesML Just get one high mileage car and one beat 4x4. I use an old S10 pickup when we get snow drifts. It still gets fair mileage.
I love it around here the 4x4 people think they can drive the speed limit when it snows so there are usually more full size 4x4s in the ditch than anything else. Serves them right for thinking they are better than everyone else.
By the way, a US gallon is smaller than an imperial gallon so you can't just compare the numbers. Don't know why.
@curtis52285 lol weird with the numbers thinky LOL. but i hear what you mean...lots of over confident idiots with 4x4's in the ditch, dont get me wrong, 4x4 or AWD with a good set of all seasons, or an agressive tread or even inter tires are Amazing in the snow, however theirs allot off people that think their 4x4 can go through anything, even tho they got balding shit tires LOL
@D41H4T5U WAIT! 4 inches??? lolololol i can see why a large truck would be usless their, and small cars would thrive. in a few weeks i gotta start shoveling snow of my roof so it dosent colapse... think i read its somthing like 10 feet avrage of snow per year
Mine has done a year average of 4,2 l/100km - 67 UK mpg. In this time, it has done 21k km (13k miles). Monthly averages are between 4,1 and 4,4 l/100km (69-64mpg). Everyday, I drive twice a 6km (3,8 mile) long distance, so the engine doesn't even get to 90ºC, and the remaining distance is done at B-roads at 100 km/h (62 mph) - 2400 rpm. I drive carefully, but I overtake a lot.
The diesel Panda can do 82.2mpg, going VERY slowly, but also 7l/100km (40mpg) not doing so!
The reading of 82.2mpg is an instantaneous one. Blueinfinity photographed his dashboard after easing off the accelerator a bit or while descending a hill. Anybody could do this.
That said, I do think more people should drive diesels. Others should remember that US gallons are not the same as Imperial ones.
@hagenar Note it says "trip MPG" in the corner. On the instant reading it says "instant" or the like. Trust me, this uses the same software as i have on my current car and it is very accurate. I know i will never see 82 MPG on my current car! Quite an acheivement. And if you watched the whole video, you will see that i explained the differences between the US/UK gallon.
@hagenar Look at my other videos, i did some when i was getting 70+ MPG. Do you think i would bother making a video like this if it were fake? It took me a good few hours to make, i wouldn't have bothered otherwise.
@D41H4T5U yea it's real.... car manufactures spend lots of money to test thier cars so they can advertise the feul econ. Plus they pump up the tires for less friction, test in the best weather, and so on. If this WAS possible, wouldn't one think that this 82 mpg would be on the window sticker when you buy the car. .... I have had in the tractor trailer truck, I drive, due to a computer error! over 100 mpg!
@WOWayne325 The trip MPG computer is very accrate. I use Fuelly to track my MPG's, you put in the miles done and the litres used and it works out the MPG's for you. The computer has been 2 to 3 MPG higher than actual MPG a few times, but that's still pretty accurate. Do you beleive me now? I have also had 58.9 MPG in the Abarth 500. It's quite easy to get high figures as there are lots of hills here, just cruise down in gear without touching the accelerator!
@D41H4T5U wow how many guys with big trucks and small dicks do you know? i take you know that from experience, plain and simple i am not going to sacrafice horsepower, for mpg.
@blueinfinity08 Who says you have to? There are Sports cars in Europe, BMW's, Mercedes, Audi etc that all do 0-60 in 6 seconds, but will still do 60 to 70 MPG. It's called Turbo diesel, somthing the yanks know very little about. Even the Audi R8 diesel does 0-60 in 4 seconds and still does 35 MPG. Caterham R500 0-60 in an amazing 2.88 seconds and 40 MPG! Choice is yours really...
@blueinfinity08 There aren't that many trucks that do great MPG. But if you put into comparison an 18 wheeler can tow 70,000 pounds and still do 10 MPG, a Hummer would probably get similar MPG and can barely tow a fraction of that! Another one to consider is the Audi Q7 V12 diesel with 1000NM of tourque, it could tow the moon. And 25 MPG isn't bad for such a car. New Range Rover's are more economical too, some of the Freelander models do 42 MPG.
Seeing that your vehicle isn't an American spec car, is that KLM vs Miles?
So your only pulling a few miles with that reading? I'd like to see what a full tank of fuels mpg reading is.. not just 30 miles or less, could be coasting downhill for all we know..
@DdgeShelby No it's in UK MPG as explained if you had watched the entire video. Sure it probably dropped over the whole tank, but i still used to get 65 to 70 MPG in this car on a tankful. If i was coasting downhill, it would have done over 100 MPG (though the computer only goes up to 99.9 MPG) There are cars here that can do over 100 MPG anyway...
@AFitz1174 Get a manual (stick shift) and a diesel then drive it properly! I even got nearly 60 MPG in my Abarth 500 the other day, and that is a performance car really!
a car that can run 12's is probably getting about 10-12 miles per gallon while making that run. Thats just the reality of driving at wot. The tesla can come close to what you were looking for and thats all electric. It is difficult to find a carthat has all the properties listed above. fast, economical, and reliable. Hopefully we will see cars that get closer to those goals soon
yeah it nice taking into consideration my car does 3x more but you should check vw lupo which is similar to panda but it's diesel is even more eco then yours : P ofc those differences are slightly less
@patryk350 Who are you talking too? Your car does 3x more what than what? VW Lupo diesel is good on fuel, probably just as economical as the Panda. Fiat are introducing a new engine soon that does well over 100 MPG
ok im a man but i dont get when people talk about cars i mean ... its just a car its ok if u are fan of them and stuff but relax dude , it is not that awesome, :/ , u have a freaky and scary adiction to cars ...
Yea sure, the "Instant consumption" in always inaccurate on cars, this will read 141.2 when going down hill. But the picture above is "trip MPG" and is around 95% accurate, maybe 1 to 2 MPG optimistic. I thought it was quite good until i heard about the couple that drove round the UK in a normal Peugeot diesel and managed 126 MPG over 3700 miles, not that's crazy! Google it, they broke a record! How many American cars do that!
show me a european econobox that will get 30mpg on the highway to and from the track and then run 12's in the 1/4 while there. it's all about preference and i prefer cars with an engine bigger than my toaster.
@justinl67 Ok hows this for you, take my car, Abarth 500 with a 1.4 turbo engine, a company has tuned it to 360 BHP. I'm not sure what kind of figures it produces, but my friend also has this car tuned to 270 BHP, that one does 0-60 in 4.9 secs and does an incredible 55 MPG on a long run (maybe more) Or what about a Caterham R500, that's so light it will do 40 MPG but has a 0-60 time of 2.88 seconds and the same power/weight ratio of a Bugatti Veyron! C'mon man, use your head, there are plenty..
oh so now we're talking about highly tuned cars. using my head i doubt a 1.4 turbo engine making 360hp is anything but dreadful and impractical for anything but track runs which would negate any fuel savings. (you feed horses, not cc's) to reach the incredible 55MPG in that thing would be like trying to drive a blender with two switches; off and liquify. Sorry, but I'll take 30MPGs with power under the curve and have my cake and a least eat a slice.
@justinl67 Each to thier own, but remember European cars have other superior qualities to those mass produced cheaply in the states, such as build quality, safety, cabin space, but above all the ability to corner without rolling over! And obviously our emission standrads are much stricter so we have to comply with these too.
what a great car and you have made the right choice Multijet rules.i wonder if they will do a diesel hot 500 with the biger 1.6l multijet engine in it?it would be nice if they could.
ya ok...id like to know your rpm, speed and if you were going down hill. my friend has a 05 bmw 5 series with the same feature that ive seen get 90+mpg, know why? cuz we were going down hill at 60mph and the engine was idling..basicaly free mileage nothing new
Yea well instant consumption is very inaccurate, jumps between 11 and 141.2 MPG, but this is trip MPG, 95% accurate (only 1 to 4 MPG optimistic) and was timed over 20 miles, driven slowly at 40 to 50 MPH. I know someone who did 126 MPG over 3700 miles, in a normal diesel car, try googling it!
My 06 Ford Taurus is only getting 15mpg :( and i only have a 3.0L V6. Gotta be my lead foot ;)

Diesel is the way to go.
01fastrace 2 months ago

D41H4T5U 3 months ago
accidents happen everyday. the average person has at least one accident. so if you were to choose to be in a sub compact or mid sized car i would choose a mid size car anyday because accidents happen everyday. And just because your car has less mass dosent mean anything when a truck traveling even at 35 mph rear ends you, ur less mass means nothing but a time of death and the 20 bucks you saved in gas.
Rone170 3 months ago
@Rone170 I disagree entirely. Europe has much more strict safety regulations than in the USA. After all, our cars are much smaller so they have to be! I've crashed 2 small cars with no injuries, my mate has crashed several, including 3 which he rolled. He also hit a tree at 80 MPH and walked away without a scratch, and that was in a 2 star safety rated car. Did you know only 135 people are killed on UK Motorways (highways) every year compared to some 30,000 to 50,000 in the US?
D41H4T5U 3 months ago
@D41H4T5U I kinda agree with you on the accidents, here in america there are more deer than ppl well where um from anyways and drunks and new drivers texting and changing the radio station. I see this all the time along with our street racers doing 80-150 mph on roads that have more potholes then hair on my head. if all of those circumstances were reduced 99% then yes i may buy a compact and enjoy the mpgs.
Rone170 3 months ago
@Rone170 Well why not buy a fast compact then? e.g. my Fiat 500 Abarth. Only a 1.4 litre but it has 170 BHP which is a lot for a small car! 0-60 in 6.8 seconds and 137 MPH top speed, 30 to 50 MPG. Lets not forget the handling, which in a short wheel based, light car is excellent too. I live in rural North Wales, the roads are empty and all the car mags use them to test cars here for that reason, and the fact that they are challenging. Watch some of my vids and you'll see exactly what i mean.
D41H4T5U 3 months ago
Fuck that i would rather get 15 miles to a gallon n pay 20 a gallon of gas then get caught driving that primus lookin yuppie car.

D41H4T5U 3 months ago
@D41H4T5U Everyone has different opinions on what they like, I personally would never drive the car, but if you like the car I respect your opinion. But most people cant accept horsepower over mpgs. Let me give an example... when i was wrecked my car (fuckin deer) i got a economical car, yeah i got excellent mpgs but the damn thing wouldnt get out of its own way 0-60 in 12 seconds. And living in the Mountains dont help. Horsepower over mpgs any day!!
Rone170 3 months ago
@Rone170 I doubt you'd say that if your fuel was $10 a gallon! Why not have both anyway? Range Rover Evoque does 64 MPG, Jaguar XF has nearly 300 HP but still does 55 MPG, Caterham R500 does 0-60 in 2.8 seconds and can still return 40 MPG! But some cars as you say are pretty slow. The new Kia Rio does an amazing 94 MPG but does 0-60 in 15 seconds.
D41H4T5U 3 months ago
@D41H4T5U but where um coming from 20,000 usd is about the price i would pay for something. not saying those cars are bad but i dont believe in buying a moving house. If you have the money to buy a 50,000- 80,000 dollar car why would you car about gas mileage??
Rone170 3 months ago
@Rone170 From my experience, American cars are cheap for a reason. They don't have a "prestige" brand, even their "Sports" cars (Vette's, Vipers etc) are built like rent cars and have very old engineering/technology, which, as fairly stated, is why they are cheap! That's why i like European cars, 100's of brands to choose from, from the very cheap, to the very expensive, the damn right fast to the super Economical, the choice is yours. In the US, it's like here's you truck with an auto tranny.
D41H4T5U 3 months ago
@D41H4T5U I do have to agree with the outdated technology like the push rods instead of an over head cam. I personally dont care for american unless it has a import motor.I own a 02 chrysler with a 6g72 mitisubishi motor. And you get a little more options then heres your truck with an automatic but i get your point. I personally would perfer a evo. not to bad on gas and plenty of power and roomy. And one more thing have you been in a accident with compact. the outcome aint worth the mpgs.
Rone170 3 months ago
@Rone170 How can you just generalize like that? There are so many factors and circumstances involved with accidents, it's impossible to make a statement like that. Doesn't stop people riding bikes now does it? And as it happens, small cars can often be safer as they are carrying less mass so the energy levels involved in accidents is lower, so there is a lower risk of injury. My car got 5 out of 5 stars for safety, I've seen one that rolled several times, only a few dents in the roof!

@1NRG24Seven You didn't watch the whole video did you?...
D41H4T5U 8 months ago
@D41H4T5U Sure I did...what does it have to do with my statement?...if your using an imperial gallon of gas you will have higher fuel mileage per gallon even as your video states the same. It says "82mpg using an imperial gallon is equal to 68mpg using a US gallon". Maybe you misunderstood my comment. The reason this is true is because a US gallon is aprox 1 liter of fuel less than an Imperial gallon, thus more fuel more miles, still your MPG is great worthy of taking notice of.

fiat is one of worst european brand u can get even that they improved it s still really fragile
zamamattiolo 10 months ago
@zamamattiolo Simple lies. Fiat own Ferrari, Alfa, Masserati, Lancia, Chrysler as well as many others. Thier engine technology always wins awards. Did you think before you wrote what you did?
D41H4T5U 10 months ago
well i did own fiat, seat, renault, peugeot, citroen, audi, VW, and alpha romeo... i kinda know a bit about european cars. i said Fiat has improved a lot, but still have problems here and there, more often than seat or others. But they are easy to work on. Alpha Romeo use to be really fragile too, they improved since. VW owns Seat and the parts quality is really different. So you trying to explain to me that they make a Fiat with the same technology than a Ferrari or Masserati? HAHAA you funny
zamamattiolo 10 months ago
@D41H4T5U the price of a fiat is the price of a engine ferrari check before it comes out of the line. i like fiat, but owning other companies has nothing to do with their quality. if you go to europe you ll see a lot of fiat in junk yards. there is a reason. i live now in US and drive different cars or trucks, les mpg more power, big engine. my gas budget went triple. and i love it. thanks for your posting.

Jeremy Clarkson averaged 68 MPG in a turbo diesel Jag on Top Gear. 750+ MPG on one tank from Germany to Northwest England. Now that's amazing. Oh, he got that driving an average of 78 MPH attempting to kill the car near his hometown and no finish the race.
unigamehead 11 months ago
this is actually believable. They got 68MPG from a turbo diesel Jag on top gear. Hey averaged 78 MPH for 3/4 of the trip to attempt to kill the car in his hometown but instead made an entire 750+mile trip from mainland Europe(Germany I think) to Northwest England.cool shit
unigamehead 11 months ago
But to implement automatic shut off technology to prevent any electrical wires to come in contact with the hydrogen tank.
tnguyen318 11 months ago
Very impressive. Americans want air conditioning, good acceleration, a larger car, and they like to drive 75 mph though. My Pruis gets 50 mpg and is much larger and capable of really good acceleration if you use the power button. Something like that is more popular with Americans although I like these little cars myself too. In the US, diesel fuel is about 10% more expensive so that's a factor too. I can't say for certain why these little diesel cars haven't caught on, but I think it is size.
dkw12002 1 year ago
@dkw12002 Don't be fooled. This car would happily cruise at 112 MPH all day. Remember Europe has been making small cars for decades so they are very good at it now! My current car does 0-60 in 6.9 secs and 40 MPG which is not bad for a small engined car! Oh and fuel here is probably 100% more expensive than fuel in the US so think yourself lucky!
D41H4T5U 1 year ago
@D41H4T5U These are not available in the US for a reason. People here want suvs, trucks, larger cars for the most part. I agree this is a very nice small car. The small car we see most of around here are Mini Coopers. Ford Fiesta, VW Jetta diesel, among several others all got great mileage even 30 years ago, but as time went on, the cars got bigger and the mileage went down. Americans are just not happy with cars that small yet. Gas is still far too cheap.
dkw12002 1 year ago
@dkw12002 Europe has higher emissions standards, tougher safety regs and produces almost twice as many cars as the US does every year. But for some reason, most Americans think they need a large vehicle. I've lived in the US for 10 weeks all told and most of the SUV's and large cars i saw had 1 person in. It seems a waste that a 4 litre car only carries 1 person most of the time, where' as a smaller car would be better suited for one person. My other car has a 0.7 litre engine!
D41H4T5U 1 year ago
@D41H4T5U That's true and sales volume is the key. The profit margin on smaller cars does not encourage manufacturers to produce them knowing sales will be low. Once a small car does catch on, they "improve" it with value-added design and equip. Anyway the problem is not going away any time soon. As soon as gas prices head upward, the truck and suv manufacturers advertise big price cuts. Sustained higher gas prices would change that though. The Model T used ethanol until gas became cheap.
dkw12002 1 year ago
@dkw12002 Well as you probably know, fuel here is already $10 a UK gallon, so small cars have always been more popular. 60% of all new cars sold here are diesel due to extra economy. The new Jaguar XF has a 3.0 V6 diesel and yet will still do 52 MPG and 0-60 in 5.9 seconds! Take a peek at my channel page, you see the Fiat 500? Well that's my car and that's starting to be sold in the USA this year, do you think it will catch on as an "economy car"?
D41H4T5U 1 year ago
@D41H4T5U I really like the Fiat 500. It might catch on if we get more Fiat dealerships or Chrysler makes a comeback and sells them through their dealerships. I see there is a Fiat Dealership in San Antonio. Yes, I would buy one of these (in red). I just hope they don't alter the design for the US market.
dkw12002 1 year ago
@dkw12002 Well Fiat bailed Chrysler out as you know so they will probably sell the Fiats through Chrysler dealers. Fiat also own Ferrari, Maserati, Alfa Romeo, Abarth, Lancia and a few more! It's a shame they won't be selling the diesel there, it's the same engine that was in my old car, in the video above, so that would have been the most economical choice. Mine is the Abarth version with 160/170 BHP which is very quick for a 1.4 litre! They have altered the design somewhat for the US market
D41H4T5U 1 year ago
@D41H4T5U There is no mention of mpg. Of course it will be good, but I think around 40 mpg tops. We have 10% alcohol in all our fuel here and the Cruze with a 1.4 L engine and an eco button is expected to get 40. My experience is that if the manufacturer says 40, you get about 37. IF the Fiat 500 gets under 37 mpg, then I don't think it will do as well. If I were marketing the car, I would reduce the engine size and shoot for 50 mpg. There are just too many small cars getting similar mileage.
dkw12002 1 year ago
@dkw12002 You're right that usually the manufactures MPG figures are optimistic (i appreciate the tests are different in the US) however the car in the video was supposed to do 76 MPG, i got 82 so it can be done! Fuel here is much more refined too, hence why the emissions are 3 to 5 times lower than in the US. Most people buy fuel with a research octane number (RON) of 97 to 100, but in the US, i believe they regularly use 87? This is why performance figures are often lower in the US too
D41H4T5U 1 year ago
@D41H4T5U People (not you) often give optimistic numbers for their fuel economy too. With Prius, the readout is electronic so you don't have to measure it by filling the tank. I had to laugh at one guy on YouTube who was touting acetone as a fuel additive. He drove 45 miles, then topped his fuel tank off and used that vol. of gas to determine his fuel consumption never understanding that the amount of gas to fill a tank is arbitrary. Smart Cars are the other little car we see more and more of.
dkw12002 1 year ago
@dkw12002 I always calculate mine by using a full tank, it's the only way to get accurate info. Admittedly the readout on the cars computer is around 2 to 3 MPG optimistic, but after around 300+ miles, it becomes 95% accurate. I have worked this out over the years when brimming the tank. Smart cars? Never been a fan of them really, don't mind the roadster and coupe versions as they look quite sporty but still do 50+ MPG, but i think you only get the roller skate look a like in the US don't you?
D41H4T5U 1 year ago
@D41H4T5U Yes, the roller skate version, good description. Here they get well under 50 mpg though. The public utility uses Smart Cars for some employees because they are efficient. The mini Cooper is more sports car looking for sure. I have owned a lot of small cars over the years. In Germany, I drove an Audi 80 that was a fine little car. I owned several VWs, and even a Ford Fiesta in 1979 which was a good little car (for the money). The worst car I have ever owned was a Corvette (1978).

CemetaryGatesML 1 year ago
@CemetaryGatesML It seems the Jetta is the obvious choice that side of the pond. You don't really get any small cars over there do you? Fuel has always been more expensive in Europe, hence the economical cars! Fiat have just launched a 2 cylinder engine, less that 1.0 litre in size but turbocharged so the performance isn't poor. Very economical, emits 3 to 5 times less C02 than a Hummer!
D41H4T5U 1 year ago
@D41H4T5U in north america...we do get some small cars like compacts that get relitivly good milage...say 20 city and 30 hwy stats like that... problem is, is that we also gotta deal with heavy snow whit makes larger vehicles usefull.
CemetaryGatesML 1 year ago
@CemetaryGatesML Well yea, but small cars in America are different to small cars in Europe! We have cars that can do 80 to 126 MPG. As for snow, Europe gets a lot more than the US, in what way are larger cars better in the snow? Smaller cars are better in the snow (talking from experiance) first of all they are lighter, help going up hills, and coming down them as you don't need to brake, secondly they have narrower tyres helping to cut through the snow etc.
D41H4T5U 1 year ago
@D41H4T5U i know small cars in europe are diffrent, because over their ur gas prices are HUGE!. taken from expiriance small cars dont do well in snow ( not sure how much snow you get, but im far north in canada)
i find that lower small cars just simply have a gard time driving through tall snow and hills...a 4x4 simply does it best here. narrow tires do help, but you need snow tires to get anywere. i cant tell you how many people i see stuck on the hills cuz their in small cars or RWD cars
CemetaryGatesML 1 year ago
@CemetaryGatesML Well yea, 4x4 is always best in snow. We don't get a lot, 4 inches maybe, but i've never been stuck in any of my cars all of which have been small, and there are a lot of hills here too. Maybe i've just been lucky! There are not many economical 4x4's here, Fiat Panda does 64 MPG, good for a 4x4, New Kia Sportage does 55 MPG, Daihatsu Terios does 43 MPG, they are probably thes most economical versions of 4x4 here.
D41H4T5U 1 year ago
@CemetaryGatesML Just get one high mileage car and one beat 4x4. I use an old S10 pickup when we get snow drifts. It still gets fair mileage.
I love it around here the 4x4 people think they can drive the speed limit when it snows so there are usually more full size 4x4s in the ditch than anything else. Serves them right for thinking they are better than everyone else.
By the way, a US gallon is smaller than an imperial gallon so you can't just compare the numbers. Don't know why.
curtis52285 1 year ago
@curtis52285 lol weird with the numbers thinky LOL. but i hear what you mean...lots of over confident idiots with 4x4's in the ditch, dont get me wrong, 4x4 or AWD with a good set of all seasons, or an agressive tread or even inter tires are Amazing in the snow, however theirs allot off people that think their 4x4 can go through anything, even tho they got balding shit tires LOL
CemetaryGatesML 1 year ago
@D41H4T5U WAIT! 4 inches??? lolololol i can see why a large truck would be usless their, and small cars would thrive. in a few weeks i gotta start shoveling snow of my roof so it dosent colapse... think i read its somthing like 10 feet avrage of snow per year
CemetaryGatesML 1 year ago
I also have one of these.
The diesel Panda can do 82.2mpg, going VERY slowly, but also 7l/100km (40mpg) not doing so!
cfmatias 1 year ago
Video is a dishonest fabrication.
The reading of 82.2mpg is an instantaneous one. Blueinfinity photographed his dashboard after easing off the accelerator a bit or while descending a hill. Anybody could do this.
That said, I do think more people should drive diesels. Others should remember that US gallons are not the same as Imperial ones.
hagenar 1 year ago
@hagenar Note it says "trip MPG" in the corner. On the instant reading it says "instant" or the like. Trust me, this uses the same software as i have on my current car and it is very accurate. I know i will never see 82 MPG on my current car! Quite an acheivement. And if you watched the whole video, you will see that i explained the differences between the US/UK gallon.
D41H4T5U 1 year ago
@D41H4T5U So then, why not make a video of it? Most still cameras have a movie function. It could only add credence to your claims.
hagenar 1 year ago
@hagenar Look at my other videos, i did some when i was getting 70+ MPG. Do you think i would bother making a video like this if it were fake? It took me a good few hours to make, i wouldn't have bothered otherwise.

82 mpg is 2.8 liters in 100 km.... doubtful!
WOWayne325 1 year ago
@WOWayne325 It's easier than you think you know
D41H4T5U 1 year ago
@D41H4T5U yea it's real.... car manufactures spend lots of money to test thier cars so they can advertise the feul econ. Plus they pump up the tires for less friction, test in the best weather, and so on. If this WAS possible, wouldn't one think that this 82 mpg would be on the window sticker when you buy the car. .... I have had in the tractor trailer truck, I drive, due to a computer error! over 100 mpg!
WOWayne325 1 year ago
@WOWayne325 and when this happens again with the truck.... I'll film it and put it on youtube. Maybe some ignorant people will believe this also.
WOWayne325 1 year ago
@WOWayne325 The trip MPG computer is very accrate. I use Fuelly to track my MPG's, you put in the miles done and the litres used and it works out the MPG's for you. The computer has been 2 to 3 MPG higher than actual MPG a few times, but that's still pretty accurate. Do you beleive me now? I have also had 58.9 MPG in the Abarth 500. It's quite easy to get high figures as there are lots of hills here, just cruise down in gear without touching the accelerator!

ill keep my titan thank you, 82 mpg is not worth looking like pussy on a toster with wheels.

@blueinfinity08 Everyone with a small penis says the same. Check my new ride.
D41H4T5U 1 year ago
@D41H4T5U wow how many guys with big trucks and small dicks do you know? i take you know that from experience, plain and simple i am not going to sacrafice horsepower, for mpg.
blueinfinity08 1 year ago
@blueinfinity08 Who says you have to? There are Sports cars in Europe, BMW's, Mercedes, Audi etc that all do 0-60 in 6 seconds, but will still do 60 to 70 MPG. It's called Turbo diesel, somthing the yanks know very little about. Even the Audi R8 diesel does 0-60 in 4 seconds and still does 35 MPG. Caterham R500 0-60 in an amazing 2.88 seconds and 40 MPG! Choice is yours really...
D41H4T5U 1 year ago
@D41H4T5U Tushay! you have a point there american cars have ways to go. hauling wise is there an alternative?
blueinfinity08 1 year ago
@blueinfinity08 There aren't that many trucks that do great MPG. But if you put into comparison an 18 wheeler can tow 70,000 pounds and still do 10 MPG, a Hummer would probably get similar MPG and can barely tow a fraction of that! Another one to consider is the Audi Q7 V12 diesel with 1000NM of tourque, it could tow the moon. And 25 MPG isn't bad for such a car. New Range Rover's are more economical too, some of the Freelander models do 42 MPG.
D41H4T5U 1 year ago
Seeing that your vehicle isn't an American spec car, is that KLM vs Miles?
So your only pulling a few miles with that reading? I'd like to see what a full tank of fuels mpg reading is.. not just 30 miles or less, could be coasting downhill for all we know..
DdgeShelby 1 year ago
@DdgeShelby No it's in UK MPG as explained if you had watched the entire video. Sure it probably dropped over the whole tank, but i still used to get 65 to 70 MPG in this car on a tankful. If i was coasting downhill, it would have done over 100 MPG (though the computer only goes up to 99.9 MPG) There are cars here that can do over 100 MPG anyway...

AFitz1174 1 year ago
@AFitz1174 Get a manual (stick shift) and a diesel then drive it properly! I even got nearly 60 MPG in my Abarth 500 the other day, and that is a performance car really!

My 2005 SKODA FABIA 1.9 SDI diesel do 62 us gallon between city and high way ...
100 MPG can be made easy ...
flashbackboy 2 years ago
a car that can run 12's is probably getting about 10-12 miles per gallon while making that run. Thats just the reality of driving at wot. The tesla can come close to what you were looking for and thats all electric. It is difficult to find a carthat has all the properties listed above. fast, economical, and reliable. Hopefully we will see cars that get closer to those goals soon
norcalnorway 2 years ago
yeah it nice taking into consideration my car does 3x more but you should check vw lupo which is similar to panda but it's diesel is even more eco then yours : P ofc those differences are slightly less
patryk350 2 years ago
@patryk350 Who are you talking too? Your car does 3x more what than what? VW Lupo diesel is good on fuel, probably just as economical as the Panda. Fiat are introducing a new engine soon that does well over 100 MPG

thats nothing on time i was getting 120mpg on my 1996 cadillac deville.....BUT!!!! i was going down a very steep hill and it was on neutral... xD
20eightballs 2 years ago
Yea sure, the "Instant consumption" in always inaccurate on cars, this will read 141.2 when going down hill. But the picture above is "trip MPG" and is around 95% accurate, maybe 1 to 2 MPG optimistic. I thought it was quite good until i heard about the couple that drove round the UK in a normal Peugeot diesel and managed 126 MPG over 3700 miles, not that's crazy! Google it, they broke a record! How many American cars do that!
D41H4T5U 2 years ago
show me a european econobox that will get 30mpg on the highway to and from the track and then run 12's in the 1/4 while there. it's all about preference and i prefer cars with an engine bigger than my toaster.
justinl67 2 years ago
D41H4T5U 2 years ago
oh so now we're talking about highly tuned cars. using my head i doubt a 1.4 turbo engine making 360hp is anything but dreadful and impractical for anything but track runs which would negate any fuel savings. (you feed horses, not cc's) to reach the incredible 55MPG in that thing would be like trying to drive a blender with two switches; off and liquify. Sorry, but I'll take 30MPGs with power under the curve and have my cake and a least eat a slice.
justinl67 2 years ago
@justinl67 Each to thier own, but remember European cars have other superior qualities to those mass produced cheaply in the states, such as build quality, safety, cabin space, but above all the ability to corner without rolling over! And obviously our emission standrads are much stricter so we have to comply with these too.
D41H4T5U 2 years ago
and with that you have shown you ignorance. welcome to 2010. Have fun back in the 80's.

No it would be too heavy for the 500. I now have a 500 Abarth btw, it's amazing!

I can squeeze 60 USMPG out of my 2000 Toyota echo. I love it!

ya ok...id like to know your rpm, speed and if you were going down hill. my friend has a 05 bmw 5 series with the same feature that ive seen get 90+mpg, know why? cuz we were going down hill at 60mph and the engine was idling..basicaly free mileage nothing new
tkddan 2 years ago
Yea well instant consumption is very inaccurate, jumps between 11 and 141.2 MPG, but this is trip MPG, 95% accurate (only 1 to 4 MPG optimistic) and was timed over 20 miles, driven slowly at 40 to 50 MPH. I know someone who did 126 MPG over 3700 miles, in a normal diesel car, try googling it!
D41H4T5U 2 years ago
Yeah that car better "beat it" all the way over here. Lol! Yay I love how you picked an MJ song. =) I wish the car looked better tho. =/
alyssaIShuman 2 years ago
Well this 1.3 Diesel engine is in many other better looking cars too, such as the new fiat 500, now that is a nice car! I have the Abarth version.
D41H4T5U 2 years ago
Well I don't think those are in the US. XD I only know the popular cars in the US really.
