I shot my step father's LCP and the trigger pull is way too long IMHO and at least on the (brand new) one he has, you basically have no idea where - within the last 1/4 of the pull - the gun will discharge. Not only does this make the firearm dangerous IMO but because I feel it's so dangerous, I find no pleasure in using it at the range and I don't intend to fire it again. My stepfather is a Marine Colonel and when attempting to fire the 1st round, he thought the gun was broken because...cont.
Jeff, awesome video. This little gun looks great. Question for you...do you think my wife could carry/shoot this handgun? I can tell you right now she can't handle my Glock 22 so I'm just looking for something for her to protect herself. Thanks!
The LCP is very good, but does have more recoil than a slightly larger, slightly heavier pistol. I recommend the Bertsa Thunder 380, if recoil is a problem for her.
Jeff, thanks for wading through all the emails, I'm sure it gets old. My question is: Can you tell me if the LCP problems are fixed now? I know they were having trouble with them and I think there was a recall, but I'm trying to figure out if I buy one how to tell if its one of the "upgraded" or fixed guns. Thanks as always.......
No problems at all now. In my opinion, there never was a problem, but Ruger found that there was a potential in the early guns to discharge if dropped, so they recalled the earlier pistols for retrofit. All pistols included in the recall have a 370 serial number prefix, and Ruger stamps a diamond in the frame's hammer channel after refit. If an LCP has a serial number beginning with anything other than “370”, it already has the upgraded hammer assembly, and is not affected by the recall.
Question for anyone. For concealed carry and home defense I currently have a S&W Model 60 .357 mag revolver 2" barrel (5 rounds). Lately I've been thinking about buying this Ruger LCP but I only want to own one gun. In your opinion(s) am I better off with what I already have? Thanks in advance.
Thanks for the info Jeff...I need a reliable backup weapon, and this looks like it will fit the bill nicely. You do do a helluva job, man- I've gotten to where before I get ready to buy a weapon, I always "check with you first"! Keep up the great work, and thanks!
I love my Ruger LCP and Ruger stands behind their products. I used to carry a 642 and have replaced it with the LCP. Its the only 380 I would buy (did buy). I use Remington Golden Saber in my LCP.
I am a BIG fan of ruger pistol and own two ( p90 & sp101 ) both are built like tanks but if I get a LCP .380 for my back up gun. Do you think I can shoot it like 1000 times a year for 10 years thats 10,000 rounds. Will I wear it out OR just break it in like my other guns? I do love to shoot alot . THANKS
@Fudd4570 dont worry bud itll take it,thats what ruger really has over the keltec, yes i functions the same, its heavier, and bigger slightly but ruger builds thier guns to last at the range or in the field keltec built their guns specifically as defense pieces within their own boundaries
Not sure if u are still looking for ammo, but cabelas usually has 380 either in stock or with a 1-2 week backorder. FMJ are pretty readily available on there, but hollow points are hit and miss.
Nobody can tell you, as everyone has a different opinion of what qualifies as a "pocket" gun. If your pocket is large enough, a two-inch barrelled S&W 500 will fit.
the smallest J frame snub nose revolver with the biggest punch is the S+W 340 PD , it is a 357 magnum that weighs about 12 ounces. but I have seen 2 shot derringers that shoot a 44 special, 410 shot shell, 45 colt, and 357 magnum. .
Try winchester silver tip 380 - they feed marvalously and have a good group at 10-15 feet. I found that if you polish the feedramp - hollow points feed much better that ball. I used a dremal with jewelers rouge and a buffing point to polish the ramp and throat and barrel feed. nver had a miss-feed with either ball or hollowpoint.
Hi Jeff, I tried 2 different hollow points, one was gold dot and the other federal hydro shok, both jam (a lot). I tried 2 seperate magazines. Also, the mags don't insert smooth into the gun, they get stuck about half way and I have to push them in. The barrel shakes around when I have the gun n 4th position (with the slide secured in place back). Does your gun do the same thing? Do you think I have a lemon
The barrel is supposed to move with the slide locked back, but the gun is also supposed to function properly. I would try some Cor-Bon hollowpoint. If it still does not work, call Ruger to have the pistol repaired under warranty. They will make it right.
When I use Hollow points, my LCP jams alot. No matter what brand of HP I use. Full metal jackets work fine. Does anyone else have this problem? Please help thanks
Have you tried any Cor-Bon ammo? If you are using a name-brand American made hollowpoint load, and it still jams, I would try another magazine. If the problem persists, call Ruger. It has to be 100 percent reliable with good ammo.
Hi Jeff, have you seen the new ruger LCPs with the fancy engraving on them??, very purty!! They are about $75 more than the standard LCP. I had an LCP until I saw the new Kahr P380, I love Ruger, but went with the Kahr

im not sure about this..but i think thats why the strict laws of california do not allow this gun..
i have never shot the ruger lcp but i do own a kel tec p3at (almost identical gun) and it works like a charm =]
A hand gun must pass a series of tests to be put on a roster in order to be sold in Kalifornia. Kaliforina is a lost cause when it comes to gun rights I'm moving to free America , Arizona in a few years!!!!
You can purchase one Private Party from a cop or person who got one from a cop... or military serviceman. I own two, ones in my pocket. I live in gay gun law Cali so I feel your pain. I want 33 round mags for my glocks dammit. Too bad I can't move my business to texas.
You are wrong. Ruger fought the Clinton ban. S&W caved to it. The LCP was not malfunctioning. There was a slight possibility that if the LCP was dropped upon its muzzle onto concrete from over 21 feet high, that it could POSSIBLY fire. Ruger played it safe, and recalled the pistols. None ever fired, but the possibility was there. Ruger is a good company that employs many Americans, and they make good products.
380 ACP is considered the minimum caliber for defense. but the main selling point of the LCP is the fact that it is so light, and thin. with bigger guns, folks start finding reasons not to carry them. I have several large caliber pistols, but I carry the LCP the most. first rule in a gun fight....have a gun!!!!
I have the LCP, i highly recommend it. it has a DA trigger like a revolver, and fires, and reloads like a semi auto. no safety to mess with , just point, and shoot. it does not get simpler than that. good luck!!!
38 special for a revolver or 9mm for a small auto. Sounds like a good gun but no one really needs the .380 anymore (they need the 327 Ruger Mag even less IMHO)
I have the Taurus PT 145, and excellent 45 subcompact for the money. but i still find myself putting the LCP in my pocket as i head out the door. I pray to god that i never have to put the LCP to the test, but it is there if that day ever comes.
I finally found one of these guns after calling about 20 different firearm stores. Waiting list, waiting list, waiting list. I offered this guy cash up front and jumped ahead of everybody else who are still waiting.
I had some major problems with my LCP today. It appears the slight downwards pressure caused by holding it tightly with the new finger extension floor plate was causing the magazine to eject as it fired. It's as if the jar of firing coupled with the slight downward pressure causes the magazine notch to slip past the internal release tab. I'm going back to the original magazine design, even though my accuracy is not as good with it.
Mine has broken twice. First it was the trigger pivot pin, they fixed it and sent it back. Then the firing pin broke. They fixed it, did the recall fix and sent it back. I still love its size, weight, and performance, even though its reliability has been crappy so far. I bought a Walther PPS 9mm as a backup for when it breaks again and is out getting repaired. I thought of getting 2 of these LCPs, but I really wanted a 9mm. I got my LCP for $299.
Despite the many problems I've had with it, I still like it as my primary carry because of its size and weight. I have yet to carry my Walther PPS, but it's much larger and I still have not received my holster from Don Hume. It's going to be a while before I carry that 9mm. If the LCP were super reliable it would get a 10/10 from me. I'm being vocal about these LCP problems because I want Ruger to perfect it. My advice is to go ahead and get one, just make sure you have an alternate weapon.
I'm sure they would make some money offering the .380 here but seeing as how it's the same size as the more powerful 9mm and would probably be rougher to shoot because of the blowback design I don't see the upside to carrying one.
Jeff, I'm a lefty and thinking about buying an LCP. Have you had any problems inadvertently activating the magazine release?

Right-handed shooters often push to the left. Instead of using the knuckle joint, PRESS the trigger rearward with the pad of your finger.

I've duplicated enough of your descriptions with the guns I own that I know If you recommend a gun (or holster, etc...), I can buy it without worry.

Thanks for all the advice you've given...

I would like to have one and test it out myself to see how reliable it would be for me. I guess I just better off caarrying my glock.

Glock makes a .380 for the South American market.

You are right about that. If they sold the .380 here in the USA, I think glock would make alot more money due to the people who demand a .380 pistol.

I'm sure they would make some money offering the .380 here but seeing as how it's the same size as the more powerful 9mm and would probably be rougher to shoot because of the blowback design I don't see the upside to carrying one.
