This hit will be illegal from now on because you can't hit a guy near his head whether you meant to or not. So it's now safe for everyone to skate with their head down because nobody wants to draw a 5 minute major or a suspension for hitting a guy who isn't paying attention. Once the players figure this out you won't see any kind of hitting at all because they will always have their head in such a position to stop anyone from hitting them. So basically what the NHL has done is outlawed all hits.

Disagree. Campbell didn't leave his feet, hit him head on, not a "headshot" except for the fact that Hamburger's head was down, no elbow...it was perfect and clean form from Soupy, no suspension even by today's standards.
The difference between this hit and the Aaron Rome hit on Nathan Horton is that the Rome hit was extremely late, almost a full second late, which is why he got an interference major. The latency of the hit is where the "intent to injure" comes into play. Why hit a guy so late unless you are trying to hurt him? Remember that body checks in hockey are done for the purpose of separating the player from the puck, and Campbell did that here. Both hits are good body checks, but Rome's hit was late.

Ok, this was not a dirty hit. Not at all and in fact I can watch it over and over again. But, with what we know today you can clearly see Campbell come up as he hits Umberger. What if he made the same hit but drove through him at chest level? Looks to me like first point of contact is shoulder to head. That's what has to come out of the game.

Whoever said Campell would have been suspended for that hit is dumb. It was a clean shoulder check. No elbows, no hit to the face, just a good clean hit. Umberger had his head down as well and never seen it coming. I remember watching that hit. It was EPIC. GO SABRES!!!

This hit, the Brad Stuart hit on Umberger, and the Kronwall hit on havlat in the 09 Western finals are all clean. Puck in play, body contact, no elbows to the head.

he would've gotten suspended b/c of hitting with his shoulder to his face. i agree it shouldn't be a suspension but hockey players are still the toughest athletes on the face of the earth. football players get "turf toe" and are out for 4 weeks, hockey players get nailed like this and they sit out a couple minutes and they're back in there finishing up the game.

its reasons like this on why the NHL was so much better during this time then what it is now. any time there is a big hit like this today there is always suspensions or major penalties that shouldnt have been given out at all. thats why the NHL isnt as exciting as it was then.

@JDSabre Not true at al. North South hits are fine. He wasn't head hunting. The guy had the puck and was coming right at him. In fact, they even used this as an example of the type of hit that IS still legal with the headshot rules.

Secondly, I can sit here and watch the hit over and over and still say it's clean every time. You're taught to not play with your head down, and that's what he did. He had puck possession which warrants a check. Wake up.

@Oilers97MessierOrr If Rome did that while Horton had the puck, it would be nearly the same as this one... Romes shoulder was 6 inches higher than Campbells as intended, and what knocked Umberger and Horton out was thier head hitting the ice.

Ok, this was not a dirty hit. Not at all and in fact I can watch it over and over again. But, with what we know today you can clearly see Campbell come up as he hits Umberger. What if he made the same hit but drove through him at chest level? Looks to me like first point of contact is shoulder to head. That's what has to come out of the game.
