  • This is the best voice in the world. Even as a child she had so much talent. Her voice was truly God's gift to this world. Anybody else is secondary. Including all these wannabe "divas" out here today. Listen and learn. Sleep well baby.

  • Hell, I felt so sorry about her, she was so young, its not fair, why didn't somebody help her?

  • Sometimes I wish Whitney was out during the vocal Jazz era with Ella , Sara, and Billie

  • @laffy

All that good stuff she could've just wailed on. She'd have nailed em all.

  • @laffy I know right! She could easily became a jazz singer!

Her voice, her beauty, her grace. Wauw. This hurts, this really hurts. Whitney Whitney Whitney, emptiness is what you left behind.

  • RIP WHITNEY HOUSTON

  • now officially my favorite whitney song. RIP lady, epic even as a baby on this track. just haunting, and lovely. incredible song.

  • beautiful voice GOD" BLESS YOU whitney houston FROM CANADA"

  • R I P Whitney! Emléked megőrizzük.

  • [*]

  • Haunting lyrics considering what just happened. RIP Whitney, what a tragic loss.

  • Well she's dead now! Bommer!

  • Clive Davis gets a lot of attention for his work with Whitney, that is to be commended. However, my friend Bill Laswell's insight to use her on this track is in fact the 'seed' that sprouted into a plant that Clive had the opportunity to harvest.

  • @Cntr4NTCD Yes, Bill Laswell is an unappreciated genius. Here, he connects an obscure Canterbury song with two brilliant musicians who might never have met otherwise or recorded such a song.

  • RIP Whitney at her best

  • R.i.p babii gurl, finally u get some rest-3 u will be missed forever ..

  • Now she is a memory rip

  • So beautiful. I hope you finally got some peace baby girl.

  • ne serite pisite na bosanskom da i ja razumim

  • Reminds me of an adult Leona Lewis... thing is... Whitney got better :P

  • @AnthonyJP91 At 3:30 that is.

  • And for all your tasteless folks, the Robert Wyatt version sucks.

  • Sigh....wow I love this song!

  • this is a cool jam by a virtually unknown whitney houston

  • i love music that good and feels timeless...including music that's out today. that's why i don't knock ALL music that's out now. too many artists from jay-z & beyonce to metallica make good shit.

  • There was a clip of the producers saying that they only did 2 sound sessions whilst recording this Whitney went off key on the big note at 3:30 & they had to record it again after this a truly gifted vocalist at such a young age to nearly cut this in 1 shoot is a tall measure for any gifted performer but WH is blessed in voice 4eva !

  • so was Whitney 18 or 19 at the time she recorded this?

  • Beautiful. I have come back to this many times over the last few years. It's just so much better than anything around thesedays...

  • @Menexpert 15 or 16

  • This is CRAP compared to Robert Wyatt's original vocals. She SUCKS out loud.

  • la versione di Robert Wyatt è 1 miliardo di volte meglio. Thumbs down!!!!!!!!!!!

  • The saxophone may sound weird, but I am of the opinion that it actually adds to the song's feeling of grief and regret.

  • Get rid of the saxophone. Drunk perhaps? Drunken sax?

  • Give me a break people....this was Fusion Jazz at its best! Material was a great band!

  • She always had a wonderful voice, but experience gave her the charm and originality that made her voice unique. She is the best and only!

  • sax is competeing with vocal...all wrong .. its supposed to compliment the vocal.....

  • No, this song does not flow.

"Cannot stay, and yet cannot go".

This song moves me more than any polished Whitney H. song...

  • that sax has got to go. She could handle it by herself. haha.

  • Perhaps it needs remastering but am I the only who did not like this song? It doesn't flow well and Whitney's vocals seemed to fall short in their use (underused), a kind of stop and go rhythm I felt was slightly annoying. The melody and tempo was boring and monotone. I love me some Whitney but I think there's a reason this song lay unknown by many for so long or if known, long forgotten.

  • @MikeSings82 you seem to have a critical ear for music--I love Whitney as well. I happen to like the song but agree with you that it isn't flowing too well and perhaps needs remastering. I'm thinking that this could have originally been a demo that was forgotten over the years.

  • "Bill Wasell"

  • She was only 19!!!!

  • @RyGil91 18

  • @PePinmySteP Dang, Even Younger!!

  • Please...is it just me, or is that saxophone really... OFF?

  • @rozonda1001 You're right the sax is off

  • you are awesome Whitney!!

  • . . . Beautiful from 0:26 - 0:40. ;-)

  • In 1982 she was 18. (if it was after August) Mariah Carey has a demo recording from 1986 at the age of 16. anyways. Whitney Houston we love youuuuuuuuuu

  • Maybe Whitney's Best song ....

  • @XIERRABK

    It is her best song...IMO

  • This is one of the best hidden gems in Whitney's career. Such talent at such a young age - this shows us a glimpse of how much of a singer Whitney could have been if she didn't go all out pop on us. The vocals, the instrumentation really capture the essence of the song's lyrics.

  • I always said that her "comeback" should have been in jazz, because her voice is not fit to do what she did 20 years ago, but it IS fit for jazz, especially her lower range. But, as everyone else already said, there is not enough money for her in jazz. However, her tour is not going well, so maybe the greed on the part of the record company will backfire on them in the end.

  • gorgeous

  • WOW . . . Beautiful song. O_O

  • Brilliant ! Hugh and Robert should be Proud !!!

  • Material was to Whitney to what Emmy was to Madonna (a few years before they became big).

  • Not only is Houston's vocal great, but Archie Shepp's mind blowing saxophone work is about the most exciting instrumental playing I've ever heard on a pop record. Too bad Whitney is all about the money now; she could have been a real artist.

  • You're partly right about the "all about the money now", have you heard of a song called Million Dollar Bill? It's ironic, the album in which this song is on has a one dollar bill with five continental US taking "bites" out of the front of the $1 bill.

  • amazing song!i listened to it before one week and i am addicted :P!

  • You're absolutely right, the song is very addictive and soothing.

  • I hope this gets included on the 25th anniversary edition (along with Shock Me, Eternal Love, the song that Whitney was recording with Jermaine as shown on ET and If You Say My Eyes are Beautiful).

  • Written by The Hopper brothers (Hugh and Brian) with Robert Wyatt in the Wilde Flowers, in 1965. Later performed by Wyatt's band The Soft Machine.

  • This song used to be an obscure jazzy classic and a rarity- Probably credited to Robert Wyatt. Written around 1965 (approx) probably first recorded on reel to reel by Wyatt's then band The Wilde Flowers. Later recorded by other Wyatt related acts like Soft Machine. Also appears on Bananamoon by Daevid Allen (ex soft machine) 1971. Others too have recorded this one.

  • This should of been a bonus track on her latest CD,though the song is almost 30 years old still a great song and just shows Whitney at her very beginning stage, she sounds very young and innocent here.

  • Thank you so much!!!!

  • Can anyone direct me to more songs along this sort of balladry vein by Whitney?

  • This is my absolute favorite Whitney song!!

  • Wow!

  • Good God, what an amazing song!!!

  • the story goes that Whitney was very nervous when she went into the studio that she couldnt get it right, so she relaxed herself, and made magic.

  • Just like they say people only use a small percentage of their human brain power, Whitney only used a SMALL percentage of her talents on this song.

  • l discovered Whitney's voice in 2000 listening to the preacher's wife cd!!! l was 5!! l ddnt know who it was until like 12!! Then l began to obsess over her amazing voice!!

  • soft machine

  • Wow-never heard this one and i thought that i knew all of her rare items. Her voice was always soooo mature and sophisticated. The only singer that has that same maturity in their voice out of the young girls was Monica.

  • ooo,whitney....

  • This song just isn't long enough I want it to go on forever and ever<3

  • W WH WHI WHIT WHITN WHITNE WHITNEY WHITNEY H WHITNEY HO WHITNEY HOU WHITNEY HOUS WHITNEY HOUST WHITNEY HOUSTON copy and paste if you love whitney
  • She was just 16.....Wow. A legend from early years!!!

  • I was born in 1982 and grew up listening to Whitney. I hate the music nowadays such crap, bring back the old school jams!!!!!

  • oh i completley agree with you the 80's were just amazing!nowadays its such aload of rubbish i wouldnt give the music a penny!give me the 80's anyday!brilliant years!

  • I agreee and Im 16 years

  • @armybratmoonprincess exactly!!!

  • @armybratmoonprincess I totally agree, sis.!! I grew up listening to gospel, but had a great appreciation for her and the music she sang. She was so clean, so polished as a performer and I believe if it's God's Will she will gain everything back..n more!!! Right now, it's between her and God and we can say whatever, but that's where the ball is......

  • please get a new reed PLEASE

  • Her voice is so smooth, soothing and well-controlled. Her phrasing is great too. The saxophone player is horrible, but Whitney's voice made up for it. This song has a haunting quality to it... very enchanting!!

  • THE DUDE ON THE SAX SUCKS

  • lol. It could be better.

  • This is a Gorgeous song. I have NEVER EVER heard it.

  • I hope in 2009 whitney will come here, to have a concert!!!

  • whitney sometimes reminds me of tamia...

think they're very similar in some songs, this is one of them.

  • I CAN SEE THAT

  • nope Tamia reminds you of Whitney! The Voice came first lol

    :)

  • Around this time, Whitney Houston briefly met Billy Joel after his divorce from Elizabeth. He thought Whitney was cute, but had no interest in her.

  • when you say, he had no interest in her do you mean as an artist or for a relationship??

  • That's from MATERIAL's 1982 album called "One Down"

  • I cannot even begin to describe how cool it is that Whitney Houston, or for that matter anyone, would go and cover a Soft Machine song.

I heard her singing this for the first time back in 2006 on Thai TV, and already being familiar with the original of this my eyes instantly focused on the screen.

With her voice at this age, Ms. Houston does more than justice to this song.

I'll also take this moment to encourage anyone who has not listened to Soft Machine to check out Vol. 1 & 2 ASAP.

  • Oh memories

  • oh whitney, oh whitney, oh whitney.. U are God!!!

  • I honestly don't like much of Whitney's stuff past the Bodyguard era except for a few songs due to the voice problems and lousier music (except for some of the Preacher's Wife). But 1982-93 is when she almost had it all!

  • She developped nodules in her vocal cords and she was using drugs.

  • WH is a proven artist and brand she will hold her hold when if ever she decides to return to popular music...as she says" their is a lot in the music industry today that I don't like but is subjected to...but I love to sing and you gotta love it to do it".

  • This is the true first Whitney Houston song. Life's a Party really only has her singing lead for a couple of short segements. The second Whitney song is Eternal Love, released just before she was hired by Arista in early 1983. These two songs must be on the Anthology or Box Set when released, just like you have Primette songs on the Supremes' Box Set!

  • Although it was released on producer Paul Jabara's '83 compilation album, Whitney actually recorded "Eternal Love" several years earlier, while still in highschool. Then came "Memories" when she was 18. While reviewing the album One Down (the comp. album which featured Memories), the writer described the song as "the most gorgeous ballad you've ever heard."

  • Forgot to add that quote was from a review in the Village Voice, November 1982.

  • Duh! Just caught the intro which details the Village Voice quote. lol!

  • i love listening to these vintage songs that i've never heard before. its really beautiful. and whitny was so pretty i wish i looked like her

  • Is Whitney considered eligble to be inducted into the Rock Hall of Fame considering Madonna started in 1983 and is already in?

  • this is the first time hearing this. It's so beautiful.

  • It's Look Like Michael Masser Produced Whitney's "Memories" Song In 1982

  • I think Bill Laswell produced this one for her. Eiterhw ay, it's a dope song....reto but futuristic

  • Amazing Vocal !
