Sorry but the Great Bell at Saint Paul's in London is much heavier than stated - over 16 tonnes of bronze ! The world's largest swinging bell in Japan is a musical disaster - just a mass of metal nothingness !
@clochebell Thank you very much for that correction - bad research by me, I'm afraid. I had only considered the twelve change bells in the north west tower. I have now amended the text.
@Audinos Thanks for your comment, Audinos. I did know about the other bells you mention and I've reworded my text. Would it be correct to say that this is the largest bell enclosed in a tower?
@Audinos the St. Petersglocke is the world's largest FREE swinging Bell. The other bell's yokes are built to set up the center of mass in that way that the bell's weight doesn't affect the construction around it too much. so the yokes are built as an inverted "U", the center of mass is around the bell's center and this does unfortunately affect the sound character, the Petersglocke's yoke is a straigt one... :^)
Technically, I guess you're right, since a bell on a balanced yoke cants but does not fully swing. Balanced yokes also make a bell swing at a slower rate. Straight yokes are standard in most of Europe, while the vast majority of bells in America are on balanced yokes. If the Petersglocke were on a balanced yoke, it would peal at about half the speed.
# The St. Petersglocke is a bell in Germany's Cologne Cathedral. It weighs 24 tons and was cast in 1922. It is the largest functioning free-swinging bell in the world that swings around the top. (The Gotenba Bell and the World Peace Bell swing around the center of gravity, which is more like turning than swinging. So, depending on the point of view, the St. Petersglocke may be up to now the largest FREE-swinging bell in the world.)
And they ring in all their glory to announce the resurrection of Christ from the dead! How awesome!

Straight-yoke bells do sound louder than those with balanced yokes.

The world's largest swinging bell is now in Gotenba, Japan. The second is in Kentucky, USA, and the Petersglocke is now about the third largest.

I cannot say for sure, but that seems like a safe statement, since the other bells I mentioned are outdoor, free-standing structures.
