I can just imagine the writers or director struggling to figure out, in the story, how to get the Harvard admissions guy to go to the Goodson house to conduct the entrance interview on a weekend night (which is preposterous). I wonder if the producer then stepped in and said, "well, sometimes you just gotta say, what the fuck!"
On the documentary for the 25th anniversary edition this scene and Tom's goofy smile after saying " Looks like university of illinois " are explained . When Tom read the U of I line during rehearsals it fell totally flat and didn't work and Tom knew it , so he threw in that goofy smile at the director / writer Paul Brickman as if to say " how's that ? " . Brickman who had also known it wasn't working loved it so he told Tom to keep it in.
