Hieronymous Bassano, musician and instrument maker, was born in Bassano del Grappa, Italy. This family was originally known as Pive ("pipe"). In addition to constructing recorders and cornetts, they were among the first to make curtals (bassoni curti or Italian fagotto).
@ZachHabs That sounds pretty fancy, official and intelligent. I was just told by teachers that it's German. In my Beethoven music for our fall concert it said "fagotto one", and I thought Beethoven was German. Maybe he stole the word from the Italians.
You made it correct? Haha, you played at the Opera House. I watch the vid all the time.

@CatFlashBlue i think it's possible we're both correct, so maybe it had an italian origin, but im sure beethoven used it quite often in german music
