Sopranos is too overrated to be honest, people get hardons because of Italian mobsters. The Wire has a much larger scope I mean it completely explained the workings of drug dealers, gangsters, addicts, law enforcement, small town municipality and education in 5 seasons. Oz was more psychologically oriented, the workings of the human mind compared; free people vs prisoners. Sopranos was good no doubt but what was it ABOUT? Nothing.
I loved both. The Wire is a very slow story but everything is interconnected. There are no empty plotlines and everything is perfectly crafted. All of the stories make sense in the end whether you realize it or not. There is a reason for everything, big or small.
Oz is more fast paced and entertaining because there's drama and excitement in every episode.
Hmm... The Wire's sociological critique vs Oz's philosophical critique. As much as I love The Wire, I'm gonna have to go with Oz. For me it's the most truthful and insightful exploration into the human condition I've ever seen on TV.
First 3 seasons of Oz are better than The Wire. First 3 seasons and last 3 episodes of The Sopranos are better than The Wire.
Like you said, The Wire is a documentary. You arent made to deeply think about themes when watching it, but its alot different for Sopranos and Oz. It is shown, not told.
I still think The Wire is an amazing series, but Oz/Sopranos simply surpasses it.
@Morcridx1 they both have different appeals though. they're both my favourite shows, but if i had to choose one i'd probably say sopranos. the wire does slightly more in terms of its depiction of crime, but the sopranos has slightly better dialogue and acting. most of the actors in the wire were brilliant but occasionally there were shit characters.
@Morcridx1 , thats only because the characters are more wealthy and their lifestyle is alot different than the dudes on the wire. both shows are about gangsters, just different type. id say the wire is way more depressing of a show than sopranos.
well HBO would have been real cool if they would have let them finish CARNIVAL. Instated of the Sopranos were they never finished a story line. But The Wire and OZ best shows wish they could have done a spin off to The Wire called Omar.
The Wire > Oz > Sopranos.

Oz is my favourite programme.
I love everything about it.
It's tragically under appreciated, it's influence can be seen in pretty much every U.S. drama made since.
I coudn't watch The Wire because it's about cops and I hate cops.
ChuckyBlackheart 5 months ago
@ChuckyBlackheart the wire is just as much about the criminals as the cops.

@Thehatt an omar spin off wouldnt have been good. the appeal of the wire was how broad it was, there are hundreds of characters etc
