  • what surface is he painting on??

    ?

  • @lizforsyth27 >> I ask myself the very same question ...

  • what a nice guy, super talented too

  • love how you show all the references/process. very inspiring

  • Great video...very inspirational!

  • This is awesome!! :O

  • OMG! To achieve this with oil colors O_O

  • WOW great work

  • Amazing job! Thanks to show it!

  • Wonderful! Thanks for sharing this.

  • how can people dislike this? This is just insane.

  • The best work ever ,what an ispiration for us , thank you we bought your DVD.

  • Not only are you so fricken talented, you're also so handsome! Some people!

  • GREAT WORK!

  • Donato, you sir, are a god walking amongst insects

  • Does he checkout her rack at 0:23 ?

  • @mrken001 He's only human...

  • @mrken001

well if he doesnt who cares, they are out there for us to enjoy

  • my mind just blew up

  • Nice, but an ikkustration for a comic, right?

  • Very gifted instruction, great work. Thanks.

  • Is that colored pencil on primed medium density board at the start?

  • I got this and it's AMAZING! Not rly my kinda style tbh but these r 5 hours of perfect quality almost "in person" proces of creating amazing art.If you expect to see "this is how you draw hands and that's how u draw legs" kind of tutorial it may not come to your expectations. If you wanna see how a real master does all the magic and if u want the magic devided into easy steps and all the mystery off and away- this is for you! A giant push of encourigement!

  • this was sooooo helpful! thank you for uploading this :)

  • What kind of desk is Donato working on? Where can I buy something like it and what's the cost?

  • @turbonetttt tbh the desk and most of his studio is nothing that special. In fact most of the stuff looks kinda old and, well, dirty :D Everything he's got there is stuff that works form him, get your hands on stuff that works for you too! You wont learn anything special if u sit on his chair or paint on his desk, but man he's got a spirit. This man has a spirit and it's there when he is talking, when he is smiling. Donato is all... art :D

  • it takes 2 seconds from ur video to subscribe to ur channe love :)

  • traditional is not better. no medium is better than another medium. It's how an artist adapts to it dumbasses.

  • amazing why are they dislikes on this video.

  • love his art, and what i saw of his character in this vid, awesome person! Great :D

  • jaw dropping incredible. I have been commissioned to do an oil painting and i haven't picked up oils in years. so im youtubing paintings and techniques to kind of get myself back into gear... and i get tree after rose after landscape after blaaaaahhhhhhhhh then i come across this... which is every essence of my passion put into oils... I am absolutely blown away and SO INCREDIBLY INSPIRED that I cannot wait to pick up these oils and go to work... I cannot thank you enough.

  • sweet

  • Donato.!! wonderful work.!! You are amazing.!!

  • Anybody knows the music?

  • Can hear a single thing.... can you post it without that awful music?

  • Can hear a single thing.... can you post it without that awful music?

  • On what kind of surface is he painting? Because it's already glossy when he's starting out.

  • @LAICK I think it was either Aluminium or it was varnished board.

  • Yeah, ofc I can go beyond him...in the afterlife...of the afterlife..maybe :S

  • Pause it at 4:53 for the best part.

  • Well after many Florence academy courses..have to say that whole process is good...but so many are producing emotional empty paintings...technically wonderful ...but so what!...Whoopee do? Save your money and learn some anatomy and paint from life...and there are tons of excellent teachers in the U.S. and Canada...no need to go abroad and spend obscene amounts of money...( I was sponsered...and gave my sponser all of my artwork as a courtesy...he is thrilled...lots of nudes..lol)

  • He's my favorite artist

  • what a legend. amazing artist

  • that was amazing...

  • I like his use of many different techniques : ) VERY destination oriented though, it would be hard for me to work that way. He starts from the beginning with a very detailed under sketch, so I was happy to see that he used parts of the sketch was visible in the end. For a min I was thinking WOW that's a lot of work to be invisible. Not my style, but I would get a lot more done if I worked this way and nobody probably know the difference in the end other than having more to show.

  • umm he is not working on masonite..#1masonite doesn't waver. #2 u can not draw on untreated masonite its too slick, and if it was it would not make the same marks shown #3 masonite is not that color.that would be heavy duty toned paper that u are looking at. he draws on it and then sprays it with a clear gloss..Maybe crystal clear or workable fixative.

  • @javacasanova You are right that he works on paper but then he attaches it to a board using clear gesso or something along those lines I believe. I go to Donato's alma matter and one of my professors explained the process though I am not exactly sure if its the same exact thing that Donato does.

  • well great job you've made 38 thousand people not-blink for 6 minutes lol

  • Awesome work.

  • He's painting on masonite

  • Awesome work and excellent tutorial/behind the scenes info...really stand out work!

  • greaaat

  • very nice technique dude - thanx for the insight

  • it's alright keep working at man

  • @SCUBONZIES

Ha ! It's ok if your just starting out, no need to dis.

Don't feel discourage by a pro's work the trick is to learn from the artists that are better than you, keep that positive attitude an eventually you'll get better as well.

  • what color did he tone canvas with and what did he draw with ?

  • FUUUUUUUUUUUU i thought this was a digital image!

    amazing

  • what an incredible person such an artist, hope know him some day

  • a dear friend pointed me towards your work...wonderful process and your color work is exquisite...

  • Amazing work! It's great to see someone this strong in traditional skills in a time where digital illustration is the easier choice of medium.

  • @MartinNH most part of the good digital artists have strong works in tradition, but they work with digital because is more fast to work and have to short dead line to finish the job.

try to look the web pages of these digital artists some ones post the draditional works to.

  • very nice!

  • Cleavage?

  • what type of surface is he painting on? if anyone knows, id be interested to try it out. thanks.

  • Looks like there could bea cool story behind the image

  • BEAST

  • super!!

  • That is simply ridiculously beautiful!

  • What did he add to the paper to turn it into a green colour, was it just some turp with paint?

  • without words, amazing

  • Donato seems like a really nice guy.

It's great to see someone actually creating sci-fi/fantasy artwork the traditional way instead of using shortcuts in Photoshop. I love digital art and there are a lot of talented digital artists out there, but oil/acrylic on canvas/illustration board etc impresses me more.

    That's a wonderful painting Donato.

  • Wow! Mr. Giancola is a real maestro!

  • How about fuck you? You're 26? You look like you're fucking 34 man. At least. Lets see you draw something and post it then we'll talk.

  • @ricefarmer

do you know anything, but the gnomon? lookin for something like that.

  • thank you so much

  • Thanks for the help, this will really help me with my painting techniques.

  • so that's the story behind the process. incredibabe :D woo!

  • wow the video was amazing!!!!!

  • I've met Donato several times and sat through his classes. He was even nice enough to field a phone call by me and set me up with the same final project he had given his class and let me work along. I have his art books and a fewof his prints I've bought. He really has a passion for the painting itself and not just the image. Super nice guy and I am absolutely buying this.

  • he seems lovely and so talented.

i might get this dvd :)

  • I like his style. He's a nice guy too. The only thing I see wrong is I don't like how he skipped the painting of the lips and how they're painted. Those are hard to paint and get them to look the way he somehow did. We'll never know lol

  • Sorry...correction...$60.00 for FIVE hours....EXCELLENT value...Everything from Massive Black is excellent...these people care about learning and are not gouging ....you get very fair value for your money...and you can download and get immediate satisfaction....and not have to wait two plus weeks and pay for postage and possibly customs...if outside the United States.

  • The other thing that is truly special about this tutorial is that this is an artist that shares so much....and $60.00 is nothing for what he offers...truly most generous. I can name several DVD's that I have bought of some artists who basically just sit there and paint...and offer NOTHING in the way of helpful info...NOTHING...and they have the gall to charge money for that...this man is generous and shares alot of excellent info..and is in his everyday studio...you see it for real. Awesome!!

  • It is back to $60.00 for six hours of DVD...download...order the download and save yourself shipping...and if in Canada...customs...as I had to pay...download, download....and make your own DVD...Excellent....if....you like to paint like he does...Note...he is an illustrator and an excellent one...but he has a very good , in fact excellent , work process that gives him amazing results...However being extremely talented helps...check out his work online.

  • How much?

  • Just buy the DVD or download. Great value...if you like his style...lots of tips for illustrastors...you will have to adapt for a "fine artist" ...such as canvas on board or canvas...he paints for speed and for his publisher...things have to be usable a flat scannable image asap.....

  • Donato has always been one of my favs for many years he is a true master !!

  • Also, where can I find a drafting board with one of those stick things that you're using to keep your hand steady? I use an easel, and sometimes use an old broom stick to keep my wrist still, but this looks better.

  • I like how you do metal.

  • Really?? It's fine but what I really think is fascinating is the face and he goes about that. It's the best part of the video because he shows his true skills with color and making something come alive. It looks just like the models face he's using. Best part in my opinion.

  • You are an amazing artist!

  • we're not worthy!

  • Gorgeous

  • This is what you call a master!

  • Amazing work! And very good teacher! I learned a lot just from this little trailer!

  • He seems like a great guy

  • Excellent and creative work.

  • could anybody tell me what kind of board he's using to paint on?

  • It's a standard gridded drafting board. It's actually quite old... Most newer drafting board have metallic ruler/guides now, instead of the wooden one we see in the video on his drafting board.

  • i fell off my chair

  • E' un fenomeno !

  • GIA !

    <3

  • amazing!

  • Does anybody know of other similar videos showing artist while painting?

  • Donato is a fantastic draftsman and the nicest guy. Met him at a convention a couple years ago. It looks like the DVD is going to rock, gotta get it. I paint digitally now, but looking at this demo makes my hands itch to get my brushes out and assemble my dusty ol' easel.

    Thanks for the demo!!!

  • This was beyond amazing!! Had I not looked at the title and saw oil painting (and of course watch him paint) I would have thought the image was done digitally!

  • Excellent! Thanks for sharing. I posted this on our network. Godspeed!

  • very inspiring, i look forward to purchasing the dvd soon.

  • Met Don last year in his studio for an Open house event featuring other artists in Brooklyn. Truly nice guy and generous. If you go visit his site, you'll learn how he goes about doing his paintings. Will definitely buy the DVD when it comes out.

  • Thankyou for this wonderful vid! Inspiring stuff. Stunning painting.

  • My local art store doesn't sell sketchbooks in that color, they're all white. I don't want to constantly tone my paper, so it looks like I'll have to order them online now.

    Fantastic video.

  • OMFG this is great !

  • that is sooooo beautiful..

  • and thankyou very much yourself ! Very inspirational !

  • Looking forward to the dvd. This is great stuff. Thanks for sharing!

  • Dommage que je sois une brêle en anglais :(

Super j'aimerai dessiner comme ça et aussi vite !

  • awesome work! its beautiful

  • It's fabulous!!!!!!!!!!!

  • This is great!

  • what surface was he working on?
