I got this and it's AMAZING! Not rly my kinda style tbh but these r 5 hours of perfect quality almost "in person" proces of creating amazing art.If you expect to see "this is how you draw hands and that's how u draw legs" kind of tutorial it may not come to your expectations. If you wanna see how a real master does all the magic and if u want the magic devided into easy steps and all the mystery off and away- this is for you! A giant push of encourigement!
@turbonetttt tbh the desk and most of his studio is nothing that special. In fact most of the stuff looks kinda old and, well, dirty :D Everything he's got there is stuff that works form him, get your hands on stuff that works for you too! You wont learn anything special if u sit on his chair or paint on his desk, but man he's got a spirit. This man has a spirit and it's there when he is talking, when he is smiling. Donato is all... art :D
jaw dropping incredible. I have been commissioned to do an oil painting and i haven't picked up oils in years. so im youtubing paintings and techniques to kind of get myself back into gear... and i get tree after rose after landscape after blaaaaahhhhhhhhh then i come across this... which is every essence of my passion put into oils... I am absolutely blown away and SO INCREDIBLY INSPIRED that I cannot wait to pick up these oils and go to work... I cannot thank you enough.
Well after many Florence academy courses..have to say that whole process is good...but so many are producing emotional empty paintings...technically wonderful ...but so what!...Whoopee do? Save your money and learn some anatomy and paint from life...and there are tons of excellent teachers in the U.S. and Canada...no need to go abroad and spend obscene amounts of money...( I was sponsered...and gave my sponser all of my artwork as a courtesy...he is thrilled...lots of nudes..lol)
I like his use of many different techniques : ) VERY destination oriented though, it would be hard for me to work that way. He starts from the beginning with a very detailed under sketch, so I was happy to see that he used parts of the sketch was visible in the end. For a min I was thinking WOW that's a lot of work to be invisible. Not my style, but I would get a lot more done if I worked this way and nobody probably know the difference in the end other than having more to show.

@javacasanova You are right that he works on paper but then he attaches it to a board using clear gesso or something along those lines I believe. I go to Donato's alma matter and one of my professors explained the process though I am not exactly sure if its the same exact thing that Donato does.
Ha ! It's ok if your just starting out, no need to dis.
Don't feel discourage by a pro's work the trick is to learn from the artists that are better than you, keep that positive attitude an eventually you'll get better as well.
@MartinNH most part of the good digital artists have strong works in tradition, but they work with digital because is more fast to work and have to short dead line to finish the job.
try to look the web pages of these digital artists some ones post the draditional works to.
It's great to see someone actually creating sci-fi/fantasy artwork the traditional way instead of using shortcuts in Photoshop. I love digital art and there are a lot of talented digital artists out there, but oil/acrylic on canvas/illustration board etc impresses me more.
I've met Donato several times and sat through his classes. He was even nice enough to field a phone call by me and set me up with the same final project he had given his class and let me work along. I have his art books and a fewof his prints I've bought. He really has a passion for the painting itself and not just the image. Super nice guy and I am absolutely buying this.
I like his style. He's a nice guy too. The only thing I see wrong is I don't like how he skipped the painting of the lips and how they're painted. Those are hard to paint and get them to look the way he somehow did. We'll never know lol
Sorry...correction...$60.00 for FIVE hours....EXCELLENT value...Everything from Massive Black is excellent...these people care about learning and are not gouging ....you get very fair value for your money...and you can download and get immediate satisfaction....and not have to wait two plus weeks and pay for postage and possibly customs...if outside the United States.
The other thing that is truly special about this tutorial is that this is an artist that shares so much....and $60.00 is nothing for what he offers...truly most generous. I can name several DVD's that I have bought of some artists who basically just sit there and paint...and offer NOTHING in the way of helpful info...NOTHING...and they have the gall to charge money for that...this man is generous and shares alot of excellent info..and is in his everyday studio...you see it for real. Awesome!!
It is back to $60.00 for six hours of DVD...download...order the download and save yourself shipping...and if in Canada...customs...as I had to pay...download, download....and make your own DVD...Excellent....if....you like to paint like he does...Note...he is an illustrator and an excellent one...but he has a very good , in fact excellent , work process that gives him amazing results...However being extremely talented helps...check out his work online.
Just buy the DVD or download. Great value...if you like his style...lots of tips for illustrastors...you will have to adapt for a "fine artist" ...such as canvas on board or canvas...he paints for speed and for his publisher...things have to be usable a flat scannable image asap.....
Also, where can I find a drafting board with one of those stick things that you're using to keep your hand steady? I use an easel, and sometimes use an old broom stick to keep my wrist still, but this looks better.
Really?? It's fine but what I really think is fascinating is the face and he goes about that. It's the best part of the video because he shows his true skills with color and making something come alive. It looks just like the models face he's using. Best part in my opinion.
It's a standard gridded drafting board. It's actually quite old... Most newer drafting board have metallic ruler/guides now, instead of the wooden one we see in the video on his drafting board.
Donato is a fantastic draftsman and the nicest guy. Met him at a convention a couple years ago. It looks like the DVD is going to rock, gotta get it. I paint digitally now, but looking at this demo makes my hands itch to get my brushes out and assemble my dusty ol' easel.
