I really do love movies like this, but the older I get, and the more I realize about life and the world, the less I want to watch them. Most of the time I just want to watch something blissfully simple. V_V
I want to see this now. I was led here by a review by this guy, roger ebert. I don't really like extreme movie criticism, so the comments below are kind of ridiculous. Why can't people just enjoy more intellectually stimulating films AND enjoy LESS intellectually stimulating films? As long as it's fun to watch, what's the point of making such obsessive critiques?? (It really upsets me).
I have made it my personal crusade to make sure as many people that missed Synecdoche in the theaters, watch this film. And then watch it again. And again. Bravo.
Second of all, if you give up on a film and decide that it's full of "nothing" (which, by the way, is very pretentious) just because it confused you, then I'm sorry, it sounds like you're lazy and unwilling to use your brain.
Third of all, it's impossible for a film not to be pretentious. That's what films are. Pretentious. They're full of pretense. Pretend. Fiction. In fact, the BEST films are actually the MOST pretentious.
You're the only one talking about some people being comparatively better than others. You sound obsessed with the subject of superiority, and determined to insinuate that I'm falsely presenting myself as superior to you in all ways just because of a more thorough filmic digestion. If you want me to say it, sure, you're not open enough to the film, and to be honest, you're sort of a pretentious pseudo-intellectual when it comes to film appreciation. Take your superiority complex somewhere else.
Saw it and loved it. There was a lot presented in the film. The idea of trying to direct an honest film about people, and never being able to complete it because there is not enough context, is genius. The script was brilliant. The characters were all very interesting, even the "non-characters" you refer to (which are more meta-characters and foils) are quite interesting. Kaufman needs to work a lot on his craft in order to do a piece like that justice, but overall it was pretty great.
i hope to post enough comments to move patmathis's criticism off the front page, because "croch full of VD" should never be associated with any movie, not even Transformers 2, let alone a masterpiece like Synechdoche.
I understand we all have different taste, but I thought It was such a beautiful film and am shocked that someone out there could have such a toxic reaction as patmathis did below. It's very sad but I have nothing but love in my heart for Synechdoche and Pat.
@patmathis I know it's too much to wrap your mind around. Just sit down and get cozy to a movie like "Irobot" or "space jam". The world is as simple as you think. Don't worry, you're right. You've always been right. Shhh.

Here's the problem.
That's the entire movie.
Now pad it with three hours of nothing.

I love how Kaufman's scripts piss people off XD

Yes, you are so mentally superior to me and I have never seen a Kaufman movie before in my entire life...
I think you sound about as conceded and pretentious as this movie was.

First of all, it's spelled "conceited".

So superior...
Too superior for friends I suspect.
patmathis 3 years ago
Haha, I saw the film with a friend, and he loved it, too.
You're reeling for an insult to nail me to the wall, but you're just not going to be able to find one :)

Right, because you're better than me. I get it, you don't have to keep repeating yourself...

I was so cinfused 10 minutes in, nonetheless this movie sucked.

Charlie Kaufman is the single greatest screen writer in history. I'm so glad he is finally directing.

Hold your enthusiasm until you watch this abortion first hand.
The direction was competent, the movie it's self just blew.
For three pointless hours of nothing presented by non-character nobodies.
I'd rather split my lip on a rotten crotch full of vd, than watch a single second of that movie again.

Come on. That was a good one. Admit it.
patmathis 2 years ago
Ok I admit it.
Roger ebert certainly has never been able to weave croch full of VD and abortion into a movie review.
Matt4n 2 years ago
Actually you sell my comment short.
It was "I'd rather SPLIT MY LIP on a ROTTEN crotch full of vd that to watch one more second of this abortion."
You left out some key details.

My bad
