My friend is selling me a 98' Toyota Tacoma, 4x4, 4cyl, single cab. Are they good off-road vehicles in the 4cyl? And by off-road im talking about trails, dunes, creek beds, some slick mud. Not really looking for a hardcore mudding vehicle. Just one to get me to the fishing spots. Just wondering cause I own a monster 85' Dodge Prospector 4x4 and im pretty much looking for a fishing truck that wont waste as much gas as the ol' Dodge.
Great little trucks. They will get you any where you wanna go with a good set of Tires. They will almost go straight up on dry ground. Now as for the 4 cyl. if it is the 2.7 liter then by all means it produces plenty of power. More then expected for a 4 cyl. Now let me give you fair warning before you buy the truck check the frame extremely well by the back wheels. These trucks are on a factory recall from Toyota for a rust problem.
Texas vehicles are know for being exceptionally rust free. Its due to the lack of salt needed to take care of winter roads. So odds are if the truck is in Texas it is gonna be in good shape.
If you think you can do better go find a spot that is similar in your area and lets see you do it yourself. Its that simple you can say I do it wrong or bad but I don't see you doing it. Or even trying for that matter.
Positive the back bumper can only get worse by falling off LOL. It was warped severely pulling out a Ford. But on a side not I have dropped the bumper on to rock ledges going over them and it didn't do any damage that wasn't cosmetic. So just sliding it down a loose rock bank is no problems.
Beat up car? My Dodge PowerRam was a gift from a mechanical contractor here in Texas after accepting his bid to work on three new local high schools. These guy hold mud races in there ranches. To attempt an entry of this height and angle in a car would most certainly result in damage to the vehicle. First off the oil and transmission pans would be gouged by the rocks, leaking into the creek. Then the car would bottom out and become stuck. At that point you would be thanking Toyota for making a factory capable offroad vehicle to pull your dumb ass out.
If you have a replacement and don't care if you destroy the car you could just hit it fast enough to make it, but the car isn't going anywhere afterward. Even if it did somehow survive by some miracle it could never get back up that and out.

The truck didn't bottom out, that was just the back bumper dragging. The entry point and angle of approach did not allow for an entry at an angle, not to mention the risk of a rollover on an incline steeper than 70 percent and higher than 3 feet (the center of gravity in this case)
