  • omg i looooove this song

  • Nice

  • I love John mayer :)

  • Hey guys!Love this song but i think the live version(live@Sunrise studios) is much much better:O as sound, rhythm and SOLOS.

  • its my favorite version of crossroads:) haters beware!

  • i like this, although its a simple riff using fuzz.

  • I just love him

  • reminds me zz top

  • is a heavy fuzz!,i'll be proud if you check my acoustic version of this song :),or the other john mayer songs i uploaded

  • great remake of robert johnson's version ;)

  • The rhythm tone is a little weak, but I do like the lead tone and the sort of blues-pop style that Mayer is developing; it's almost like early rhythm and blues.

  • @Vanguard448 he said in an interview that its the same settings for both so technically its the same tone

  • @seanshowtime1996 Well in that case, it just changes the semantics of my statement; I don't think that the tone fits the rhythm playing as much as it fits the lead.

  • it just sounds kinda lame.. like somethings missing

  • It's good but it sounds like the music they us on "Hot it's Made"

  • I wouldn't say the tone is amazing. I suppose it's unique for a mainstream album nowadays, but nothing others haven't done with a classic tube amp... and maybe a fuzz pedal, but you don't need one for this sound.

  • his tone is phenomenal.

Sounds nothing like our heroes SRV, buddy guy or BB King. But you can't deny this is good stuff.

  • superior

  • bad news. everyone who has sang this song something bad has happened to them. original singer robert johnson died at 27 then eric claptons son died then one of the allman brothers died lynerd skynerd dies in a plane crash...now john mayer....uh-oh

  • @XXXemochickXXX15 He got a shit ton of bad press. He said the word nigger, talked about former girlfriends.

    D:

  • @XXXemochickXXX15 one of the allman brothers? you mean THE allman brother

  • @themanchild27 no i mean ONE of them died

  • @XXXemochickXXX15 i know but duane who was THE ALLMAN BROTHER aka the best aka one of the greates guitarists died not just any of them duane

  • @themanchild27 what does it matter?

  • I wonder if John Mayer is visiting your videos and criticizing your guitar playing? Nope, he is too busy being rich and getting laid.....

  • good song 25$ amp wtf lern atleast something about music befor you say something and i cant even afford the pedal that he uses yet but for this song i use a boss fuzz pedal

  • One of my favorite tracks from the album.

  • I can appreciate where everyone's coming from in terms of tone/timber and what not, but my own rule of thumb is always listen live (before throwin rocks). I'd just like to clarify that listening to music on youtube is pretty moot for an argument because MP3 formats and the like are compressed (not the nice way) and chopped up to kingdom come. You're never gonna get the full feel and sound from listening online....not here at least. To say he has no concept of tone whatsoever is just ignorant.

  • @phyraxis i agree with you. music was originally meant to be played and enjoyed live anyway.

  • @naguitarhero haha you're a dipshit. clapton wouldn't want his amp to sound like that? they played it together live with the same fuzz. so know what you're talking about before you comment.

  • its a great song

  • not a $25 amp. it's an $800 fuzz pedal, Pete Cornish NG-2 fuzz :-)

  • John Mayer has no conception of guitar tone what so ever. it wouldn't be half bad except that the guitar sounds like its being played through a $25 dollar first act guitar amp bought from walmart.

  • @naguitarhero Dude he has one of the most desireable tones, it may not be to your taste but it's definitely not a sound you'd get from a $25 amp from walmart.

  • @naguitarhero apparently you have no knowledge of music. have you never heard of a distortion pedal? John Mayer only uses the greatest tones out there and sure as hell is not coming from a $25 amp. Think before you comment

  • @xxXXHUDROCKXXxx i never said it was coming from a $25 dollar amp. I said it SOUNDS like it is. Just because he has good gear doesn't mean he has a conception of tone......Eric Clapton would be embarrassed to have his amp sound like that.......and if you think good tone comes from a distortion pedal your wrong. Try listening to Eddie Van Halen for some lessons in tone buddy. Not John Mayer. I like John Mayer's music. I just wish he would make his guitar sound a little better.

  • @naguitarhero actually I am a big fan of Eddie Van Halen, Eric Clapton, and Jeff Beck. I know quite a bit about tone, and if that is the tone that they are going for then they can have whatever sound they want

  • @xxXXHUDROCKXXxx I guess so. I just think that John Mayer could sound so much better. But thats my opinion.

  • @naguitarhero He should make his tone better for who? for you? Appreciation of timbre or any aspect of music is subjective because for something to be 'good' or 'best' it is dependent on the values of the valuer. Mayer clearly values his tone (states that he loved this sound in an interview for instance), so his tone is 'great' for him. Not for you, because you value different timbre characteristics in a guitar sound. Stop wishing because he will never change his tone for you!

  • What is the point of covering a song if you are going to make it sound exactly the same? John puts a cool twist on the song, with a sick solo.

  • This is reaally more of a Cream cover of the song, and it's very different. I'm not sure whether it's different in a good way. But I dig the solo a lot, the guy's a killer player, no one can deny that.

  • An insult to Robert Johnson

  • @13Musicmachine haha what ever you say. i mean, you must know good music. after all your screen name is musicmachine. i will definitely listen you you Mr. MusicMachine.

  • Great version of Crossroads, pity the rest of the album is back to he's gay shite.

  • This isn't bad, but it's nowhere close to both the original by Robert Johnson and the heroin induced ear blistering version cut by Cream on Wheels of Fire

  • Awesome!!!

  • shitty

  • @LtTeertstra Your a suck.....

  • mmmmmmm....sexy.

  • try to keep an open-mind people... its nice that john mayer is doing a different take on it with the overall sound. variety is the spice of life :)

  • @John Mayer,

All of your talent aside... How could you do this to the blues?

  • I think it's a great version - understated lead really gets into the essence of the song and a nice twist to the riff.

  • all you need to go and search robert johnson crossroads he started all this

  • The Rush version is much better than this one.

  • this sucks so much

  • john mayer is good, but this cover is reallyyyy bad :(

Listen to Cream do it and it's amazingly better

  • nice

  • @MrMieppie Sure this is nice, greatest song ever, nice cover from Robert Johnson

  • he didnt still shit he modest as hell and he copied 4 songs so what stevie ray vaughan copied jimmi hendrix eric clapton copied bb king bb king copied albert king and budy guy and all the new shit kanye west the gold digger song copied ray charles ive got a women and sean kingston copied ben e king

  • listen to robert johnson

  • But John Mayer steals SO MUCH

That's such a fail. And all the douchebag shit he says and does in the media...

Imo he totally totally degraded in everything. In his talent, in his believeableness, in his hotness... Mehh

  • @xOEHLALA What has he stolen?

  • F.U. all that hate john mayer and his music he is awesome!

  • great cover John. love what you did to the guitar, original, and the voice fits extrmely well. not asking much out of you since i already know you are amazing. unconstructive critics! shut up...

  • oooommmmmgggggg..... somebody please fucking shoot me.... this is blatant pollution of a classic.

i can't hear any emotion in this song at all, it sounds like some crappy pop ballad... smh ...

  • very refreshing cover ... im just a sucker for mayer though

  • Worst. Cover. Ever. Guitar sounds like a bad keyboard

  • Omg i love this song

  • I think it's not cool to NOT like him..

Ur stupid if you dont like something or says u dont like it because 'its not cool' ...

  • Nice performance, but the guitar sounded like a series of cow farts.

  • @SidVicious10101

Never heard a cow fart, but I do like the tone he's using in this song.

  • @SidVicious10101

Love this song...but ur right, kinda does

  • would everyone stop arguin and just listen to the song

  • @guitaplaya1494 go buy the album if you dont want to read comments. These forums exist for a reason.

  • Mayer's an easy target, I guess . . . nothing so bad about this version. He shows some talent -- just becauue it's not "cool" to like John Mayer doesn't mean he sucks.

  • @LenoraX its not about what's 'cool' or not; its the fact that he is a pop star trying to do blues music and he just doesn't put the right energy into it. I don't think he sucks, he's very talented, but he just doesn't put the excitement and feeling into blues. It is a type of music that is purely about feeling. Thats the reason EVERYONE uses the same progression (at some point), but just puts their own 'self' into it. To me, he takes something out of this song rather than put something in.

  • @scottelliottmusic

go and watch slowdancing in a burning room live in LA then yuo wil see what feeling realy is

  • @bleachfreakchris Go listen to Blind Willie Johnsons Dark Was The night, Cold Was the Ground then Buddy Guy The First Time I met The Blues to see what blues music is. If you dont get the feeling from those two and see where Mayer is lacking, then I guess we have different reasons for liking music. Then watch Cream Crossroads 68 to see what Mayer failed at.Mayer is good at the whole acoustic love song thing, but he really doesn't do anything for the blues.

  • @scottelliottmusic honestly it wasn't a very good cover. But Mayer's actually pretty talented. Obviously, he doesn't compare to the great you've named off (Buddy Guy, Clapton) but he's actually very talented at electric guitar. Big blues guy, good stuff

  • @shirkmaster13 Yeah I know he is talented. Never said he wasnt. I just don't like what he does with his talent. Hes fine at the girly love songs, and he can play blues style music, but he doesnt have the grit to make it worth while.Blues is terribly boring music unless someone has an extra spark to their playing. His licks are just pretty common and he is very produced so he has no edge to his playing which to me makes it boring, even in the live stuff I have watched. He very safe sounding

  • It's intresting John, amongst all the versions that others have recorded. Not exactly definative is it? I guess that's the point. The distortion on the rythm part (is that an organ?) Kind of put me off at first. It sounded farty. By the end of the song it seemed reminecent of something David Bowie would do.

  • the best song ;)

  • Actually it's a fuzz... and one of the most in-the-pocket drummers around, Steve Jordan.

  • i just think it's a great cover of a great song...

this entire album is his best one yet

  • sounds like that tracy chapman song

  • this song is old school and funky !!!

  • this isn't bad, i like the solo though

  • Dear god, this is the worst crap I've ever heard in my life. I feel liek my ears were raped and no matter how much I scrub, they're still dirty.

  • no disrespect to john but the only problem with this song is that mayer uses his pop voice. i know that blues is all about making versions ur own but for a rough blues song like this u just cant use that soft serenading voice. Great guitar nonetheless.

  • lol way to think inside the box. The contrast between the voice and the guitar is what makes it so good

  • fair enough but if u watch this song when he plays it live he sings it differently which i think sounds better. im glad i could make u lol though for supposedly thinking "inside the box". i didnt realise i was talkin to such a profound 'out of the box' thinker who finds it hilarious when someone doesnt share his opinion.

  • no need to get defensive over a difference of opinion. I just didn't agree with how you seemed to claim that there's a certain way that the song 'should' sound. As for the live version you speak of, I haven't seen it so i can't comment on that.

  • No worries, think I took your comment the wrong way and thought u where being a smart arse. Either way John Mayer is without doubt a quality artist.

  • @SuperTomshaw.....I agree....you have to be incredibly talented to suck the soul out of a blues standard.....I have no idea how he pulled that off, but man, no one else can play the blues like John Mayer.

  • The live version with Clapton was great but it's his duty as a musician to reinvent and develop music. The whole album deserves respect for not copping out and being another Continuum.

  • @LittleWing117 copping out and being another continuum? Continuum is Mayer's best album.

  • it's good, but he's no Clapton...this is more how Eric does it nowadays...Mayer is a really good guitar player but you can't really tell by his albums

  • The sound is so raw, just love it!

  • The tone is disgraceful. It's sounds so electronic and upfront. Not good. The lead tone at least has reverb on it.

  • Sorry to break it to ya, but he played both the rythemm part and the solo part on the same guitar, with the same settings, distortion with the guitar volume about halfway down, middle pickup

  • Eric Clapton is proud of this sol i thnk :=)

    Smashing goog !

After all it is the Clapton way he play inn....

  • Hey Shimo, the song does everything is it suppose to do, enjoy it, don't compare it

  • What.... has he done to Robert Johnson? Everyone has different taste but in my eyes, and eares, this is not good and not worthy of the original. To bad.

  • @Shimo.....thank god someone still knows about music....i nearly gave up after reading these comments...and some people need to learn the definition of "raw"....i think they mean to say "Stale".... must be some antonym fad i missed out on.

  • this song is wicked and you're all idiots

  • i kind of expected better of him on a song like this

  • started off not liking it, but its got a cool groove to it

  • The tone is awful and I hate how many people who are into pop and think John Mayer's cute and all are gonna hear this and have no appreciation or understanding of what this is. John Mayer's music is so bad, but his blues playing is so good. But that's just what I think.

  • The tone he chose here is perfect. It's exactly like it's meant to be. It stands out and brings you to a different world (whatever it may be).

Raw and powerful. But I admit, if this was his regular thing, then it wouldn't be so cool.

  • this sounds like a pop version of this song. I dont think its that good

  • Great !!

  • I love this tone, it's really different. I did like the version with Clapton, however this is cool. A bit reserved for Mayer, but the guitar, the harmonies, the bass, the drums... It's funky, bluesy, and just different. I wish the guitar break was a bit longer, but otherwise I like it. And it seems the live versions stay a bit truer to the original.

  • This song has a bluesy feel to it...I like it!!

  • @rmb18queen derrrrrrrrrrrrr???????

  • I had the fuzz sound of his guitar normally his tone is amazing

  • I think seeing him play this with Clapton before I heard his own version ruined this one for me. I loved the more bluesy version he did with Clapton

  • ^ :)

  • i agree! i saw the one with clapton first and i dont like this one and i really like the one with eric:D

  • Those complaining that this is a disgrace because it's not the same as the original fully are out of touch with the spirit of Blues itself which had a strong heart for doing it your own way. If he were to do it exactly as it had been done before, that would be a disgrace to the honor of Robert Johnson.

  • @Moorendini If he supposedly wanted to honor Robert Johnson by evolving the blues, why didn't he just write his own Blues song instead of ruining a perfectly good one? Fine to re-interpret the blues, but this is like saying a play-dough human figure is just as good as "the David", because its a new take on it. New take is one thing, thats what SRV did (he mainly played covers), but he played them like the originals, just w/more intensity 'cuz he knew what was up.

  • I think you misunderstand the meaning of re-interpret and are confusing it with copying. I don't consider this "ruined" as so many of you are claiming, just because it's not exactly like the original. The dry tone on this is an amazing take. Just cause y'all are infatuated with your wah peddles, doesn't mean that they are necessary. So :-p

  • @moorendini.I dont use a wah pedal. This song is Robert Johnson lamenting being a cursed man after his deal w/the devil.Mayer makes it sound like Justin Timberlake.Yeah its well recorded/produced, but he is in no way in touch w/the spirit of the original.Only similarity is the name. Its like if Clockwork Orange were 're-interpreted' as a romantic comedy.even if Spielberg directed and Pacino stared it would still suck, like this.he should have written his own song if he wanted to do funky blues.

  • as much as i hate john mayer (and i dont give a fuk about anyones hate comments to this) ive hated mayer since i heard that fukin body is a wonderland (bubblegum tongue?? get fuked) but this isnt robert johnsons version this is creams version which modernised the classic robert johnson version and thas exactly wat this pussy has dun but by blowing it out his arse

  • @MrBl0nd3 it's his style. Go listen to the "Try!" live album, great stuff, not pop at all like some of his other albums. Trust me, he's an amazingly talented guitarist

  • at first i didnt like it, felt like it didnt give the original song justice.

but the more i listen to it, the more funky it becomes.

    hmmmm i like it

  • i think its funky as hell. in my opinion, its a wicked interpretation!

john is trying to take an obscure song and put a mainstream twist on it; so more people can enjoy it.

its my guess that the guitar isn't supposed to sound like a guitar, but instead, just be part of the track. just like in most modern music there are very few defined instruments, most are just synthesized sounds.

  • It's good to know that personally not liking, being moved by, or resonating with someone's music makes it empirically, definitively, universally bad no matter what anyone else thinks or feels.

I was worried people might be becoming more open minded and less judgmental about the art of music.

Comforting to know I was wrong.

    (Sarcasm.)

  • guys this is not horrible; it is an artist reinterpreting a song. John recreated this song with a guitar tone and style that has not been heard before. Do not listen to it and compare it to the classic; think of it like you're hearing it for the first time. It's an alternate view; John knows that there are some people that would be completely disenfranchised by it but it's not meant for you...

  • i thinkits good!

  • disgracing robert johnson should carry a jail sentence...

  • True JayDuck77 Two great guitar player ... whit a little help from EC

  • dolores huremovic's version is better

  • John Mayer sure can channel Clapton and his sound. Still groovy baby!

  • Mann5711, your totally right. I'm just kinda going through all these songs off Battle Studies as I write an essay, so I'm not paying much attention to the lyrics but just having the music sink in, and one thing i can tell already: some of his tone in this album REEKS! But I'm not judging the entire album yet.

  • I like this but I prefer the rawness of creams version. But still putting a slick groove on a classic.

  • best piece of new album

  • What do you mean what has he done? He's put a sick groove on an already groovin' song. Just flow with it man.

  • Comment removed

  • i completely agreee....

  • Tho it's nothing compared to cream's version, it's still a nice song. Too bad I was hoping for the more cream-like version.

  • You were hoping for a cover to sound like the original? What the fuck is the point?

  • well you know, more the same with the licks and the playing style. I can't really explain but if you compare them with eachother this version is not really the same, except for the guitar that's playing through the whole song. But this song isn't that bad, the more I listen to it, the better it gets.

  • too crunchy

  • no reverb either. lol.just straight dry tone.

  • esperaba mas de este CD , John Mayer se ha POPularizado demasiado

John es un gran cantante y un buen guitarrista , no debe perder esas tecnicas en su musica , es lo que lo hace unico

  • I like the tribute to Stevie Ray Vaughan.. Event though the original is just as good

  • hes awsome at guitar but i dont like this cd. Them crooked vultures was the cd to get on the 17th everyone get it! Continum was better than this.

  • this is more like it... this is one of three or four good songs on this album

  • hmmm....all I can say. Is this where the light is?

  • eric clapton should uhh well lets say kick john mayer's ass

  • Dear god John what have you done to this song?

  • Great song. Shame it's the only reasonable one on the whole album.

  • @kboulema You think so? I find the complete opposite.

  • Well, it's just that there was such a sense of musicality in the previous albums that I cannot find in Battle Studies. This whole album is just so slick and smooth that, and I 'm afraid to say this, it destroys Mayer's particular style of composing and ends up being very mainstream.

Nonetheless, I'm open for fresh insights. I'd hate to see myself hating John Mayer.

  • @kboulema Well firstly, I need not tell you to give it a few spins to let it all sink in. The production is characteristically crystal clean, but the use of instrumentation makes it "slicker". I assure you the jazz voicings of Mayer past are still in full effect, they are just relayed through a new medium (synth like effects). This album seems to bear a marked likeness to Heavier Things. I thought Continuum was odd step when released as well (liked it of course). New directions take time :-)

  • this is not even close to clapton....i think mayer is a good player but he sounds very mechanical he lacks that feeling.....

  • @lumpfish99 shut the fuck up...you cant play like him....stop being a hater

  • eh!!! i am pretty good at guitar hero! and no need for the rudeness dude its just my opinion....or are you his mama?

  • @lumpfish99 THIS version, yeah...It's just supposed to be a fun litle ditty, he's obviously not trying to take a serious blues number on this one. I don't care for it either but it does fit with the album theme (musical themes anyway).

  • The production on this album is pure witchcraft. This is the definition of crytsal clean. The drums are p-e-r-f-e-c-t.
