  • I want to do this so bad. In great standing in school, working on community service, in CAP and Army JROTC, and am working on some other good stuff. Hopefully I make it to the T-38 when I'm older :)

  • @Read2Rock Rog that. F-5s used in the movie. The Vance birds are T-38s. Similar looking but VERY different airplanes. The paint schemes kind of make them look the same. The T-38s that the Beale guys fly are painted black, like the "MiG 28s" in the movie. They REALLY look similar.

  • @Read2Rock The "MiG 28's" (no such real plane) were F-5s.

  • haha i like how to tail says FTW!

  • have they ever landed a talon on an aircraft carrier?

  • What are the external diferences between the F-5F and T-38?

  • @BlackPhantomJambo The wing is the most obvious difference, the F-5 has leading edge extensions and missile rails that the -38s don't have. The F-5s intakes are also shaped differently.

  • That's some great air to air footage you got there. nice vid!

  • My son turned 24 today and had his T38 dollar ride at Laughlin. What a present

  • Nice instructing, J! It's so cool that you do this. No, your job does not suck!!

  • how hard was it getting into the 38 track. i will do anything to make it to the 38's!

  • The F5 would have been a great step-up for students if the Air Force had any left. Bigger J85 engines and a leading edge wing extension. Better performance all around. The T-38 is a workhorse no doubt.

  • i had the honor to fly this awesome jet, it's the most kickass thing ever and gotta say when you take this white rocket to the limit it's fucking amazing.

ooooooooh man i gotta say i had so much fun flying this aircraft. XD

  • Nice video... From a member of 89-10.

  • NICE CLOSED!!!!

  • what a great video...I'm commissioning in a month and headed to Vance after that...I'd be so stoked to make it into a 38 - thanks for posting!

  • @gracedre Cool - good luck! Vance was a blast! Have fun!

  • My dad was one of the designers on this Plane for Northrop and his name is on the Patent. He passed away Feb 2005 and I wish we would have had a video like this for his service...I miss him so much.

  • Well you can sure be proud of the work he did in designing the finest jet for training USAF pilots. We went through the Tweet, but we loved the T-38. She did everything and looked good doing it.

  • Thank you so much for your kind words(((HUG))). I am very proud of him :-)

  • We all thank him for this wonderful plane he designed and take or hats off in his honor. This plane was flown by my father and he has not recovered (and never will) from the impressive performance and looks of this plane. He wants to own a retired t-38 for fun flying, but we don't have 1mil laying around the house... :)

interesting fact for people whom are new to this incredible plane: It is the fastest rolling plane that has ever been manufactured and still holds that record!

  • Thank you so much((((HUG)))), yours word touched my heart, and I will share them with my family.

  • @comfiecozy

I have over 1,500 hours instructing in that plane. Currently checked out in a B-737, 757, and 767, and I can say that the T-38 is the best airplane I've ever flown.... By miles.

The people that designed her, really knew what they were doing. No one ever has a bad word to say about the Talon.

  • @Rv6tube Thanks((((HUG))))

  • @comfiecozy Be very proud of your dad. What an awesome airplane. Cutting edge for its time and still recognized as the best!! I loved flying the white rocket!!

  • @sqwank2 Thanks((((HUG)))

  • @comfiecozy It's a great jet to fly. Classic 1950-60's jet design. A little underpowered, but great once you get it going.

  • Very thanks quatro. Very good video. I like T-38 :-)))

  • It does have very high wing loading for a trainer, but is a simple plane, relatively speaking. I wonder if the F-16 will become the next trainer for supersonic purposes...

  • @Jonno2summit They are in the process of looking at procuring a replacement for the -38. It will still be around for a good while, though, at least 10 years...

  • Any word on what plane that might be? BTW, I was just thinking about my candidates for most beautiful jets in aviation history. My choices would be the Me-262, T-38/F-5, and F-16. What's everyone else's picks?

  • As I understand it, they are just now thinking about setting up requirements and such. It will probably be a new jet though, not something already in service.

Sexiest jet? T-38 or the F-22. IMHO the Me262 was really ungainly, they really didn't know what they were doing with jets yet...

  • The F-22 looks better every time I look at it. It's growing on me. Of course, performance-wise it's untouchable. And guess which engine they are using in the newly-manufactured Me-262s? T-38 engines!

  • I believe these 38's are the new "C" model with updated instruments. The T-38C will be around for many years to come I'm happy to say.

  • You are correct. It's a great training airplane. It will be around for a while, but not forever. Who knows what the Air Force will use to replace it.

  • Cool. i didn't know the air Force still flew the Talon. as a trainer obviously?

  • The USAF only flew the T-38 as a trainer. It has no combat capabilities.

  • Sorry - didn't really answer your question. Yup, they are still flying strong as trainers at UPT bases across the United States.

  • nice vid

  • This is hands down the best UPT class video I've seen in a while. Good work!

  • Sweet! Thanks bro

  • my afjrotc sasi flew a t38 when he went for training

  • Sweet video, Sweet jet...

    1980-1984 Vance Tweet IP

  • do you take this training course after 4 years of college?

  • After four years of college, officer school, T-6 academics and flights. Then you move on to fly the T-38.

  • Obviously, cchambers never flew one!

  • Agreed - although a simple supersonic jet, the T-38 quite a joy to fly. An exceptional aircraft.

  • uh, yeah....jet was a blast to fly...'takin off 35....let's leave it in burner and level off. ..let's see what noise complaints ensue...no offense, vindicator58....

  • What a cool video... Love the sound track too

  • Thanks!

  • I worked on these ships at Vance till I got laid off. My father flew in some of these planes at Vance when he was an I.P. on T-37B 's during the mid 60's. He also worked on the same planes he flew at Vance.I have his flight logs and some of the T-38's are still here that he flew. He also flew 100 missions over Korea back during that war.

  • Not military, but grew up around Enid and always been very proud of VAFB. It is a good feeling seeing those student pilots training to kick butt somewhere! Most of them are great people and fun to be around. God bless them all!

  • What is the difference between this and the F 5 tiger .

  • F-5 has a (small) radar, capability to carry Air-to-Air missiles, an actual gun, external tanks, and in some versions, air-to-surface ordinance.

An F-5 has bigger engines, leading edge flaps, maneuver flaps, and in most cases is single seat.

In most appearances, they *look* the same and share a lot of characteristics.

  • If I'm right, T (T-38) stands for trainer and F(F-5) for Fighter

  • Yes, the T in T-38 does stand for trainer and the F in F-5 does stand for fighter. As I explained earlier, those aren't the only differences, though. Both good jets at what they were built for.

  • what does VN 07-11 stand for?

  • VN is the tail code for airplanes at Vance AFB, OK. 07-11 was the class number for this class. 07 is the fiscal year and 11 means we were the 11th class of that fiscal year.

  • Um, I was part of the -38 cadre from VN 07-11 class and that ain't our video...decent video though.

As to the range you guys are talking about it's called Smoky Hill Range, we do bombing runs there all the time (B-52s) and every now and then you hear the Talons from Vance or WM doing their thing down low.

  • Dude, it is our video. It's not the one that we showed at assignment night because that one was just plain silly.

Are you still making up your own departures? The GONZO-ONE still doesn't exist at VN.

  • i see t-38s just about everyday at the salina ks airport, they're awesome.

  • That's close to where the IFF squadron at Vance does simulated bombing missions (there's a range near by). Because of the limited amount of gas that a T-38 holds, they have to stop at Salina for more of it to get back home.

  • nice...i wasnt sure if they were from vance or whiteman...very neat stuff, next weekend they are having hawgsmoke here...an a-10 gunnary competition...should be pretty awesome!

  • The jets from Whiteman also stop at Salina, KS a lot for gas. In fact, other Vance jets stop there as well on out and backs. Sorry to mislead you - not all the T-38s you see at Salina are from the Vance IFF squadron (but they probably do make up the most frequent visitors).

  • saw a couple of your guys' t-6s and t-38s at hawgsmoke this week...pretty sweet, the t-6s looks like fun...that pt-6 has some power!!

  • WAR BIRDS!!! lol great video

  • FIGHTERS!!!!!

  • No. TRAINERS!!!!!

  • Twas a joke. 38's are about as interesting as a Kite

  • I like the color on them T-38's.Great video,5 stars.

  • Thanks

  • this would be Phase 3 and that means its called SUPT

  • JSUPT to be exact... Vance AFB.

  • ok, thanks man

  • what´s ENJJPT?

  • Euro-NATO Joint Jet Pilot Training

  • Congrats on getting Vipers... you have no idea how lucky you are. Did you ever apply to ENJJPT?

  • Thanks. No, I didn't apply for ENJJPT.

  • you got vipers? You SOB!

  • Yup.

  • what are "vipers"

  • F-16

  • F-16s are referred to as 'vipers' by those who fly or work on them. Everyboy else calls them Falcons.

  • How tuff is the flight training? How many people make it through out of the entire class?

  • Air Force UPT is one year long and it is the most demanding, but rewarding flight training program around. My flight commander when I was a student at Reese had a good analogy. He said it was like cramming a 2 year masters level course into one year. On duty I flew. Off duty I studied six days a week. Washout rates varied from class to class. I was a T-37 instructor at Reese AFB for three years. I'd guess the average was about 25%. One class I had ended up with a 50% washout rate at graduation.

  • Was this back in the day? Because those rates are CrazZ

  • If 'back in the day' includes the time period from '84-'88, then yeah, I guess it was. You have to remember, this was the middle of the Reagan buildup. We were pushing large numbers through SIX UPT wings back then. We viewed a class showing up on the flight line with less than 40 students to be small. My class that had the 50% loss rate started out with 52! So we were definitely seeing more folks who did need to be there, but since the standards remained the same the loss rate went up.

  • I was a T38 instructor at Vance AFB 1975 to 1980. Washout rate was less than 5% the entire time I was there. Long live the rocket. Best 1,700 hours I ever flew!!

  • quatro...what was your assignment?

  • Vipers

  • Nice...what squadron you in out there...word is I'll be in the 62nd

  • lawndart

  • Nah, just a T-38.

  • Man, I have GOT to make sure I get my pilot training slot when the time comes...

  • You'll never regret it. Best job ever.

  • this video is awesome. i hope to someday train in these jets and make my way to a fighter. by the way what song is this and who the artist?

  • "Here it Goes Again" - OK Go

  • does any one know the width of the main landing gear?

  • I've never measured it during a walk around, but I would guess 6 - 9 feet. Closer to 9, though.

  • lol... maybe about 6.9 feet?

  • Yeah these are the neatest birds the Air force has for training. My old man flew these when they first went into service.

Well it looks like you all are going to have to keep on rocking in the free world.

Thanks for flying for our peace, God bless freedom!!!

  • God I would have loved to have been a pilot in the USAF and flown those birds.

  • You can buy one of these used for about 160k. Can't wait until I can afford it.

  • $160K, I doubt it is airworthy. Last price I saw for a fully overhauled rocket was $4 million.

  • I've flown it too! Pilot Training in KCBM...it's a passion that aircraft.

  • Where was this taken?

  • Vance AFB

    Enid, OK

  • I Want more!!! Best Aircraft ever built!

  • Yeah right, I control these daily and have flown in them. They're alright but best ever? they're training jets! How bout some F22's that's whats up
