EVH's playing is far more ORIGINAL. That's the key word...ORIGINAL. All Sambora played was basic blues soloing. Both solos suited the music perfectly well though considering it was improvisation.

Don't get me wrong though, I liked Sambora's playing as well and it probably does suit this song more due to the songs basic nature. But, I'll still take EVH's solo over it as I believe a guitar solo should wail and have a bit more off the cuff nature to it.

this solo is not a good example of Ed's playing.. it's just him pulling off BS to get through.. Anytime you guys need a reminder throw in VH1 album and pay close attention..

sambora is better. Better player, more organized, and more creative. eddie does the same thing with each solo....finger tapping. Eddie rapes his guitar, while Sambora makes love to his guitar :)

Though I love Eddies style and I'm no Bon Jovi fan, in my opinion Samboras solo fits much better to this song.

It sounds more bluesy, while Eddie is doing his finger tapping as million times before.

Sambora is def a great player..I just find his style a little too neat and predictable. Eddie just has a knack for improving and noodling in the groove of the song that makes his playing so much more interesting. So any Sambora fans out there, calm down. I'm not putting him down, i think Eddie is a totally original inteesting player.

@evander5150 How wrong you are. Richie isn't even his own band's lead singer, yet his voice is a thousand times more powerful and captivating than Van Halen's. He is actually a wasted talent, because he's better than Eddie Van Halen and Jon Bon Jovi combined. He's simply amazing.

@DancinJim Sambora, is a good guitar player, no doubt, Edward Van Halen reinvented modern rock guitar. No way to compare the two. Listen to " Van Halen ", listen how Edward changed the way of playing.For your information, EVH is not a singer, is a guitar player. Listen how he plays, not what he sings.Do the same with Ritchie...Do you notice any difference, in sound, tecnique, groove, speed, picking ?I don't want to complain. Just make you notice, and appreciate, the musical difference :-)

@evander5150 No I don't notice a difference, because if I'm honest 80s guitar players all pretty much do the same thing - the one thing the separates Richie and Eddie (and Jon Bon Jovi) is the fact that Richie has the best voice. To me, that, combined with his style of guitar that I love, beats anything anyone else could do.

after listening to bon jovi for 7 and a half years now, I wanna say that all the Richie's solo sound the same. wanted dead or alive or born to be my baby or these days!

I don't hate Richie; I think he fits good in Bon Jovi, but I had to say this since I saw u guys saying crap about my guitar Idol. I play guitar and probably can play all bon jovi songs when i look at the tabs. but to play van halen u need technique. it's not only abt speed

God I can't believe I came across this video, I completely forgot about this performance. Never gets old watching Eddie play guitar or Richie, and being a Hoosier I was born to love John Mellancamp. Hell I used to work for an architech firm in Indianapolis and his dad would call all the time regarding projects. Very good times! =)
