sounds when Dirk Diggler returning to the movies...i have a idea of that returning is to gay porn movies, like a returning of John Holmes...and is a sad return, gettin AIDS and to die... GREAT MOVIE; PTA is DA MAN!!
I had the pre release green vinyl copy of this single (a bit larger than the 45s) in the summer of 1976 before the official release. These green vinyl copies were given to the radio stations prior to the official release. I should have held on to the bloody thing. I think they used to call them “asset tapes” but I’m not sure.
ELO is the world's BEST band ever... a kid 15 years old. I was AMAZED. And he is correct!!
But what i ask to the world is: why doesn't such a good band as ELO have a lot of fame, and a horrible kid like Bieber does???? God please make justice!
This song epitomizes the mid-70s...nearly destroyed my living thing during that time period of sheer decadence and hedonism. I still get chills when I hear this song and those strings!! Only ELO can deliver violins, cellos, bass, guitars in the rock symphonic manner it does. Saw them in concert in KC in '75. Lost part of hearing that night, but was worth it!!
Is it just me, or does the into to this song sound like some kind of ethnic music you would hear in Latvia, Lithuania, Estonia, or Romania? I like it either way. :)
Oh yeah! Popping the 8-track into the car radio ( huh? what's an 8-track?), warm fall day out for a drive, head be-bopping, shoulders swagging, fingers tapping on the steering wheel, the road and a whole life ahead of me, good times =-
This takes me back to my room in my mothers apartment, when i was a teenager, playing this song over and over again on my cassette player, a New World Record was one of my first pop albums :-)

@MegaCamaras well I don't agree with you, the beatles invented the symphonic rock with revolver, sgt peppers... , after that, ELO made this and THEN, The Beatles dreamed of playing like ELO xD
@mrJACKjjs Shut up, Dirk. I told you I got a plan. I got a very good plan. We want what is in the goddamn safe, in the goddamn master bedroom, in the fucking floor, in the goddamn fucking floor safe. That's all.
I love ELO , grew up listening to these coz my mum used to play their records (vinyls) all the time ... also thanx to the movie Paul for bringing this brilliant music back into our lives
These guys were my very first concert ever. My sister got to see Elton John play the Garden in NYC during the Bi-Centential. I was 10 and my parents wouldn't let me go along. I cried and cried. The next year, ELO came around, and we BEGGED my parents to let me go along. I will never forget walking into a 20,000 seat arena for the first time in my 11 yrs. My jaw hit the ground. Then these guys came out of a flying saucer and I was sold on rock shows forever more, lol.
@jambassfunk I don't think so.I have always thought of the "Livin' Thing" as a troubled relationship that the man is trying to save and the woman wants out.But how much do I really know?
Amazing how good this generation of music was. I try time and again to see what's new and if there is anything there. Hardly. I listen to the new music coming out on the radio, bands on talk show, whatever. Time and again, nothing, nothing, nothing. What's happened to good songwriting? Well, at least we have all the good music previous to 2000. Go ELO!
Some international viewers would like l a transcription, that is, a visual representation of the wording. Many of us do not have the original record. Now please dont get started. I am very much satisfied with your effort. Next is Telephone Line!
Billboard's #77 song of '77. ELO hit #13 pop, #36 AC in the US. How'd it do in the UK? God bless! Does Jeff Lynne keep his shades on all the time in tribute to his bandmate in the Wilburys, Roy Orbison? Somebody let me know.
@loopycow94 no im pretty sure the amazing lyrics and melody put the song together, not the annoying high pitched nonsense. and dont try to tell me whats best for my opinion
ELO is the classic music. I grew up with them. I am almost 50 years old and will never forget ELO. I saw them in concert in Miwaukee on the Time Tour and it was unforgettable. Thanks to the Band for and unforgettable performance. My friend and I will never forget you had dinner at the same time as we did. And I was too chcken to get your autograph. @TheLaluna1 What a great post, I agree, they're fantastic. I had a similar experience when I saw Hil Harper from CSI New York in Baltimore, he was lovely and smiley but he was eating with his friend, and he smiled at me, but I didnt' have the guts to put down my fork and talk to him, damnit!
@titan52berg agreed the moody blues are a class act but here is a list of elo classics:- livin thing, sweet talking woman, calling america,mr. blue sky, telephone line,so serious, the way lifes meant to be,ticket to the moon, evil woman, sweet is the night, summer and lightning, confusion, dont bring me down, etc, etc.you must admit the list is endless.
I dont hear any new music with any real creativity. Its seems to be the same old cookie cutter formula that has been regurgitated to the point of obsolescene. I keep going back in time to find "new" music I havent heard before. Every now and then, a pop jingle surfaces that isnt totally horrible, but it fades quickly.

The leader of ELO claimed that their inspiration was to "pick up where the Beatles had left off". They sure as hell accomplished that goal!
