@bensharp9@sanpeeps For those trying to find info on your HJ650, I too have had difficulty but came across the following method and it seems to have some merit. I read that the year and month follow the "S" in the serial number on the back of the headstock. For example, mine reads S9707..., which would mean it was built in July of 1997. It makes sense as these were indeed in production during that time. I'm of course not certain, but this is the best info I've found. Hope that helps!
Just wanted to let you know I cant get enough of this video. Just a fantastic job! Im drawn to it like the moth that keeps banging up against the porch light. I try to pick up bits and pieces of it, and then I simply forget about studying it and I give a good hard listen. I imagine I will be flying round it for a long time. There is a lot to learn. but it is very inspiring. FWIW, I have a Samick 650 SAT. the 335 knock off. Nice guitar, but Id love to find the HJ650 also. Thanks again.
I'm a guitarist and I cannot tell you how many times I've watched this video. Such a beautiful rendition of this great old song. Great job on both the slow soulful beginning and the upbeat section. Just played so cleanly. Makes me want to get jazz lessons or just quick guitar altogether...
i have this same guitar. i bought it in Beijing, China and never seen it anywhere. do you know what year yours is? there is very little info/photos of this model online. you get a great sound out of it! cheers!
Hey mate. Lovley playing there. Just got the oportunity to buy an HJ650. I seem to be having trouble getting an accurate date from the serial number i have been given. Any advice and also, whats your opinion on the guitar/ Cheers
nick beautiful job on this song. i have 4 samick archtops and they are all in stock condition and i am looking for thast nice sweet sound yours has. what kind of the pickups are in yours and what amp are you llaying through thanks art peterson
Nice playing. The sound of that Samick is beautiful. It sound like any expensive guitar. By the way your ideas that you are playing, it sound like any pro. Love it!!
i think the intro kind of lacks at times, at least compared to the bassline addition. i thought the start of the bassline was really smooth and well played. the solo was also great.
Great technique, great tone. One thing I can't figure out is are you playing through an amplifier or is that the sound that comes out of an archtop naturally? I've never knowingly heard a recording of an archtop played without an amp?
I agree, if you turn the amplifier just a notch it will sound more acoustic, but this sounded real jazzy, but than again I search for that Django acoustic sound on archtops as well. Still I love the Chet sounding archtops or the Joe pass if you will. I used to play samick archtop myself but now I play a Johnson country gentleman. Great playing by the way.
It depends on what kind of archtop it is. The original archtop was an alternate acoustic guitar (pre-electric era) that was designed to cut through a band mix. If the guitar doesn't have too much like pickups or center blocks stopping the top from vibrating (and alot of potential feedback) then it should actually sound very good acoustic.
Very nice, our styles are very simular. That fat Samick of yours sounds great, better than a lot of Gibsons that I've been hearing lately. Keep playing man............
i just bought the left handed version on ebay, nice to know it will sound great. are those the electronics and pickps that came standard with your guitar?
D'daddario strings, roundwound, maybe 11's or 12's (can't remember what i've got on that guitar) and i'm playing through a vox AC15, trying not to disturb the neighbours...

Basically, most archtops are made to be electric guitars, but not all are, and some can be used as both.

I'm playing through a Vox AC15 amp with a mic (maybe an SM57, i can't remember).
In my opinion, archtops don't sound too great recorded acoustically (though i'm sure someone will disagree with me).
Really glad you liked the clip, thanks for the comment - N
