As of March 2007, Mzee has been removed from the enclosure. A female hippopotamus named Cleo has been added to provide companionship for Owen. Owen seems to be adapting to his new companion and it is possible that Owen and Cleo will have offspring when he reaches maturity.
I'm assuming these two best buds are in Africa - and I've read that only Somalia suffered significant loss in the tsunami. Where were they stranded to begin with?
@MegaLolzGirlz I'm so glad that the story made news headlines a few years back. We can all use more beautiful stories like this. Hope you have a Merry Christmas and all the best to you in 2011! Glad you enjoyed the book, too.
@justice4luv The book I believe is available to order from Amazon. All the best. sorry it took so long to reply, but this message didn't come to my inbox.
did yu noe there is another hippo whu isnt gettin along w/ other hippos so dey r gonna try to take the hippo away from the turtle and put the hippo girl and dha hippo boy togeather.so ad to break friendship apart. really what do yu think abut thissss:(((9
I found this to be the most amazing thing I've ever seen between animals the breath taking bond that 2 different spieces could have,The world could learn something about this that animals aren't prejudice.
In the 130+ years that Owen has crawled through this life, this is the closest he has been to knowing love. An old man in love, is like flowers in winter. Thank You for Posting this Clip, Will
When I was 7 months pregnant with my second son my oldest son and I were at the library one day and he brought me a book about Owen and Mzee. I fell in love with the little hippo for his strength andhis heroic journey. I ended up naming my baby Owen!
I had my pet tortoise for more than 10yrs. Unfortunately, one day someone left the gate open and she walked out. Neighbors found her and thought she was a h2o turtle and dump in in the pond in local park. Found her 3 days later in a dumster. My only comfort is knowing that she is back in our home buried in our backyard where she should of always have been. I LOVE AND MISS YOU DEALY PERLA!!! AND AM SORRY I WASN'T THERE TO PROCTECT YOU. =(
This is the best story I had ever seen! It was soo touching I just love it! I have a tortoise too. My tortoise is and ivory tortoise and it's a girl named Crystal! This the best slide show I had EVER seen! It was very amazing and made me love tortoises than ever! I love tortoises! I LOVE TORTOISES! I LOVE TORTOISES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I love the story of Mzee (thought to be the oldest living creature on earth) and Owen. Mzee knew Owen was a baby and alone, so he adopted him and 'Daddy-ed' him. They could teach us about Love.
Great story, my preschool son and I ready it together for his preschool homework. Quick tip, I just found Mzee and Owen clothing on the Janie and Jack website under the Friends Forever collection. Since my son loves this story, he will love the new gear.
Goes to show if animals can get along and we as humans are starting wars...Wo is the REAL animals? We can stand to learn from friendships like this..GREAT video!
People can learn something from these animals. I have had a troll copying my you tube name so they have been leaving derogatory comments on most of my fav videos...its annoying.
an amazing story, but i'd hate to ruin it all for you, but i recently visited haller park where the animals are kept and they have been split up
owen was getting too big, and it was thought that he would live a better life with his own kind, and mzee has gone back to living the happy solitary life he is used to.
I read the books to my son's first grade class last year. They loved them and his 2nd grade wants me to read them and update the kids on what Owen and Mzee are up to now. I can't find any info regarding how they are now. The last I heard they had been separated. Does anyone have an update that I can share with my son and his class mates? Thank you.
The original website from Lafarge is no longer. Last I had read was that Owen was settling in nicely with the older hippo, Cleo. Cleo was apparently too aggressive to be in with Mzee and other tortoises. But Mzee has some new tortoise friends with him.
Hi I have just returned back from Mombasa. Kenya this week and and actually saw Owen and his new mate Cleo the hippo. He is looking well though still small for his actual size. he lives in Haller park should you want to google and find out more
Agreed. But it was lovely while it lasted. I understand that Mzee is with another tortoise now, called Tito. And Owen is with an older hippo, Cleo. They're all close by each other and can still visit though, so that's good.
The only thing my tortoise has done to me, which I think was nice meant, was that I had just given her her favourite food and was scratching her neck ( tortoises love that), then she ran towards my neck ( I was lying on the floor), and started scratching it...
this friendship is so inspirational. makes me sad and glad every time i see it.

Beautiful story set to beautiful music. What song is that and who is it performed by?
mamarcelle 2 years ago
It's from Sleeing Beauty. I originally had What the World Needs Now Is Love, but WMG (Warner Music Group) had it removed :(
Oh well, this works, too, as I had to use Youtube's "audioswap" and find something that fit in the same time frame. Thanks for visiting.
