12,sitting in my room, way to high on columbian red wondering what the hell this guy is singing about.still gettin high, still listin to the Dan,still dont know
@greeneking77 Gnarly tone ain't it. I love this solo very much. But actually this was played on a electric sitar. But it is still possible to play on guitar, there is some guy on youtube who covered the solo really clean. you can probably ask him.
The song is about the Southern man egging on the North to start something. "You go back Jack and do it again" is clear example of this. Even though we all know the North didn't start the Civil War, they of course BLAME the North for it.
@Playjex great observation. i would imagine that the 'jack' is sort of a play on 'union jack' - the union are seen as akin to the british monarchy (who flew the union jack, of course) that sought to dominate the original 13 colonies in the revolutionary war, just as the north sought to 'dominate' the south in the civil war. denny and skunk really knew how to get their point across, eh? although it is possible that fagen and becker added that line when they were putting 'finishing touches' on it
@Playjex This song has nothing to do with the US Civil War, it is about people who never learn from their mistakes & in so doing stay bound by their karma. Stuck in the wheel, the cycle of death & rebirth, never being able to achieve liberation.
@ZedAlfa273 I've had the pleasure of meeting Denny thanks to my neighbor who is his cousin. I can assure you from being a Dan fan and asking Denny himself, that the "Southern" interpretation is correct. I heard it from his own bearded mouth.
My FIRST favorite song! I remember going with my Dad to "Vibrations," to buy the 8-TRACK casette. I was about 8 or 9 and I stepped up to the counter and said, "I want , 'Back Jack'." The guy couldn't believe sombody so young wanted a Dan album but he pionted to the "S" section and told me the name of the song and the band. The rest is history!
I can't tell you how many times I almost wrapped the car around a tree listening to this song when I was younger. Always started driving really fast, singing at the top of my lungs to this taking sharp turns and pounding the steering wheel. Life was at its most perfect moment during this song.
I can't believe this song is 40 years old!!! still songs better than the crap that's on the radio and my husband is the Steely Dan fanatic in the family.
Ain't try to make some sort of "I like this even I was a kid" But believe it or not I listened and like these kind and this song when I was on 2nd grader. All credit to my mom and dad. (dad's especially)
I was born in 1970 so I didn't experience the Dan through the lens of awesome cocaine parties and hot Farrah clones rollerskating in hot pants but they are still and always will be the background radiation of the first ten years of my life.
I love Steely dan sooo much And I'm a 21 year old girl that it used to being surrounded by shit music in clubs. Just shows this kinda music can never get old. I don't think there's a song I dislike by the band!
reminds we of 2 weeks bliss on the greek island Paros when I was 19, takes me back there everytime I hear it. Cold beers, tavernas, backgammon, ouzo, girlfiends and friends. I am 48 now!!!
Now and Because!!! Soulful meaningful funky rocking swinging heart felt music. Please listen. My funky buddha makes me sing, my funky buddha makes me swing. Every time I hear this song, I think about how much it reminds me of a Santana song. There's just something about it, I instantly think of Santana first and Steely Dan second.
@vaibanez17 Steely Dan definetly has their own unique sound and their lyrics are so bizarre. I love Steely Dan. However, there are a few tracks, such as this one, that has a Santana sound,or, vice versa. Also, dont forget WAR as well. Some similarities.
Drivin' a Caddy with a high ball of whiskey on the console. leather seats, leather jacket and a couple of hundred $ bills rolled up in the pocket. Cruisin' the strip lookin' for action and finding in it in spades!
@akitaroy This song sounded racist as hell when I first heard it, but it is true as hell when you think about it. Money doesn't matter in a power hungry world that thinks your nothing but shit anyway.
tell me when that wheel is going to balance while you all wheel your AMA BS what do you think clouds are made of you fuckheads. leave whomever is in pat's body alone -no one helps him or listens when he is here-when he is gone you beat him up or something-still he keeps trying to make it real. loving on the run?? the one in his bod y last night is one of the few who maybe wasnt embarrassed-most had " been here before" my puppy licks his toes-exactly as he said. everyone else is bashng on him
@abyios I was born in 1987 and it still touches. When music speaks so well, it's hard not to be understood and felt by others even of different generations.
Thank you. I love Steely Dan, had this on cassette as a gift years ago from Mr. Graham. Played it to shreds (salvaged with sticky tape) thanks to Tony for sharing some wonderful educational times together!
@Flint2198 Even the highest top comments fall flat to a recency rule which is calculated with the popularity of a video and the amount of time which has passed vs an increasingly demanding thumbs-up demand to stay on top.
Steely Dan is an American rock band; its core members are Donald Fagen and Walter Becker. The band's popularity peaked in the late 1970s, with the release of seven albums blending elements of jazz, rock, funk, R&B, and pop. Rolling Stone has called them "the perfect musical antiheroes for the Seventies."
I remember hearing this on the radio when the DJ said "new music"....Damn Im old. That was back in the day when you could get an album and maybe, just maybe, might be one song on it you didnt really like. Now its the other way around.
i believe the dildo reference is from 'the naked luch' by ....????? does anybody remember? i guess i only remembered the title cuz it has the word 'naked' in it...
Yup, not gonna lie to ya...a steely dan can be interpreted as a dildo....now....can we all get over that and move on to the music? ,which by far is the 'the' most awesome part of this band.....dildos or no dildos,....get over it kids ( or don't and stay home and use your steely dan) oxox
What's spinning "round-and-round" is my head each time I hear this song! Feels like.... 3 seconds before I fall flat on my face after getting drunk! No wonder some say these guys were hi on dope when they wrote this piece. I'd buy that.
In my Hall of Fame, Steeley Dan is one of the top 50 rock bands of all time. The quality of their body of work is solid, their sound unique, musicianship, song writing skills second to none.
