The song is about the Southern man egging on the North to start something. "You go back Jack and do it again" is clear example of this. Even though we all know the North didn't start the Civil War, they of course BLAME the North for it.

@Playjex great observation. i would imagine that the 'jack' is sort of a play on 'union jack' - the union are seen as akin to the british monarchy (who flew the union jack, of course) that sought to dominate the original 13 colonies in the revolutionary war, just as the north sought to 'dominate' the south in the civil war. denny and skunk really knew how to get their point across, eh? although it is possible that fagen and becker added that line when they were putting 'finishing touches' on it

My FIRST favorite song! I remember going with my Dad to "Vibrations," to buy the 8-TRACK casette. I was about 8 or 9 and I stepped up to the counter and said, "I want , 'Back Jack'." The guy couldn't believe sombody so young wanted a Dan album but he pionted to the "S" section and told me the name of the song and the band. The rest is history!
