  • i was playing this on guitar hero, then me my mom and our two chihuahuas went for a walk and one of them had a heart attack and died :(

  • Great song and Denny solo. Funny a band named after a dildo.

  • I WAS 7 YEARS OLD AT THE TIME

  • Steely!

  • 12,sitting in my room, way to high on columbian red wondering what the hell this guy is singing about.still gettin high, still listin to the Dan,still dont know

  • Now you swear and kick and beg us that your not a gambling man

  • One of the best and classic songs of all times!!!!!! Love this... Awesome storytelling...

  • listen to denny rip that solo to pieces!

  • This group is a good at combining jazz and rock and roll

  • anyone know how to get the guitar sound for the solo at 2:40? a pedal, rotating speaker?

  • @greeneking77 Gnarly tone ain't it. I love this solo very much. But actually this was played on a electric sitar. But it is still possible to play on guitar, there is some guy on youtube who covered the solo really clean. you can probably ask him.

  • Example.....That more is not always better.

  • "Your black cards can make you money

So you hide them when you're able

In the land of milk and honey

You must put them on the table"

Very deep lines. Steely Dan were some social geniuses.

  • I may only be 20 but this is some funky shit!

  • I played this song daily @ the NCO club bar whlie stationed in Thailand 73-74

  • The irony of me liking Steely Dan funny auld life.

  • If you like The Doors' LA Woman album, you automatically like Steely Dan.

  • The song is about the Southern man egging on the North to start something. "You go back Jack and do it again" is clear example of this. Even though we all know the North didn't start the Civil War, they of course BLAME the North for it.

  • @Playjex great observation. i would imagine that the 'jack' is sort of a play on 'union jack' - the union are seen as akin to the british monarchy (who flew the union jack, of course) that sought to dominate the original 13 colonies in the revolutionary war, just as the north sought to 'dominate' the south in the civil war. denny and skunk really knew how to get their point across, eh? although it is possible that fagen and becker added that line when they were putting 'finishing touches' on it

  • @Playjex This song has nothing to do with the US Civil War, it is about people who never learn from their mistakes & in so doing stay bound by their karma. Stuck in the wheel, the cycle of death & rebirth, never being able to achieve liberation.

  • @ZedAlfa273 I've had the pleasure of meeting Denny thanks to my neighbor who is his cousin. I can assure you from being a Dan fan and asking Denny himself, that the "Southern" interpretation is correct. I heard it from his own bearded mouth.

  • Next time they start playing that rap/pop music during lunch at school i think i need to sneek into the audio booth and put on some real music

  • kool

  • My FIRST favorite song! I remember going with my Dad to "Vibrations," to buy the 8-TRACK casette. I was about 8 or 9 and I stepped up to the counter and said, "I want , 'Back Jack'." The guy couldn't believe sombody so young wanted a Dan album but he pionted to the "S" section and told me the name of the song and the band. The rest is history!

  • From the days when musical ability outranked looks/marketability!!!!!!

  • Man, it's great to listen to this baby again. It still blows my mind. Friggin awesome!

  • I can't tell you how many times I almost wrapped the car around a tree listening to this song when I was younger. Always started driving really fast, singing at the top of my lungs to this taking sharp turns and pounding the steering wheel. Life was at its most perfect moment during this song.

  • I can't believe this song is 40 years old!!! still songs better than the crap that's on the radio and my husband is the Steely Dan fanatic in the family.

  • Ain't try to make some sort of "I like this even I was a kid" But believe it or not I listened and like these kind and this song when I was on 2nd grader. All credit to my mom and dad. (dad's especially)

  • I always think of zooming through the Mohave Desert to see my Great Granny (R.I.P.) in Barstow in the 80's when i hear this song.

  • MAN I'LL ALWAYS LOVE THIS SONG

  • I was born in 1970 so I didn't experience the Dan through the lens of awesome cocaine parties and hot Farrah clones rollerskating in hot pants but they are still and always will be the background radiation of the first ten years of my life.

  • I love Steely dan sooo much And I'm a 21 year old girl that it used to being surrounded by shit music in clubs. Just shows this kinda music can never get old. I don't think there's a song I dislike by the band!

  • STEELY DAN ROCKS!!!

  • reminds we of 2 weeks bliss on the greek island Paros when I was 19, takes me back there everytime I hear it. Cold beers, tavernas, backgammon, ouzo, girlfiends and friends. I am 48 now!!!

  • Reminds me of the years I lived in Hawaii!

  • my dad love this song

  • The Dead Zone brought me here! (Pilot episode, when Johnny plays the Weel of Fortune....)

  • Every time I hear this song, I think about how much it reminds me of a Santana song. There's just something about it, I instantly think of Santana first and Steely Dan second.

  • @vaibanez17 - When I was little I thought it was Santana, sounds like them.

  • @Willsatx in agree some of their stuff has a SANTANA sound to it. who are also a great group. Carlos knows how to jam a guitar tha'ts for sure

  • @vaibanez17 Steely Dan definetly has their own unique sound and their lyrics are so bizarre. I love Steely Dan. However, there are a few tracks, such as this one, that has a Santana sound,or, vice versa. Also, dont forget WAR as well. Some similarities.

  • dont act like guitar hero didnt bring you here

  • Drivin' a Caddy with a high ball of whiskey on the console. leather seats, leather jacket and a couple of hundred $ bills rolled up in the pocket. Cruisin' the strip lookin' for action and finding in it in spades!

  • @akitaroy: Spot on!!!

  • I was born in the 90's. Didn't even dream of borning when this song came out; yet still it's one of my favorite songs.

  • You should make it available for mobile too. Good track

  • Ahh Steely Dan. It's been too longs since I last popped one of these records in

  • incredible rush- even after decades

  • you may flag this for spam if you want, but I am the 2525 who liked this video.

  • Another timeless AWESOME classic,Infinate!!!

  • I imagine this song has touched every living person who lived in the 1970s

  • @abyios I was born in 1987 and it still touches. When music speaks so well, it's hard not to be understood and felt by others even of different generations.

  • @abyios True :O)

  • @abyios and after

  • @abyios What, even in Afghanistan?

  • @abyios This song touched my grandmother and gave her herpes.

  • i LOVE this song !!!

  • Thank you. I love Steely Dan, had this on cassette as a gift years ago from Mr. Graham. Played it to shreds (salvaged with sticky tape) thanks to Tony for sharing some wonderful educational times together!

  • Solo with sitar-guitar sound starts at 2:40 and then the keyboard solo. Best parts of the song.

  • What a soul!!!

  • ..17 'PEOPLE' with no SOUL!!!

  • Makes me want to be a drug runner.

  • @Flint2198 Even the highest top comments fall flat to a recency rule which is calculated with the popularity of a video and the amount of time which has passed vs an increasingly demanding thumbs-up demand to stay on top.

  • @GeneralCane I'm sorry, not time that has passed, I meant the number of comments.

  • I still can't believe how they got their name.

  • Steely Dan is an American rock band; its core members are Donald Fagen and Walter Becker. The band's popularity peaked in the late 1970s, with the release of seven albums blending elements of jazz, rock, funk, R&B, and pop. Rolling Stone has called them "the perfect musical antiheroes for the Seventies."

    Brilliant !!

  • Guitar hero brought me here... Thank god for guitar hero showing me some amazing songs!!

  • Great song for night driving.

  • definitely the soundtrack of my brief residence in vegas in the early 90's- i'd still love to do it again.

  • Yup, not gonna lie to ya...a steely dan can be interpreted as a dildo....now....can we all get over that and move on to the music? ,which by far is the 'the' most awesome part of this band.....dildos or no dildos,....get over it kids ( or don't and stay home and use your steely dan) oxox

  • THESE GUYS GOT 'BEST ALBUM COVER OF THE YEAR' at on time...when 'real art' still meant something! - Shar

  • I typed in "do it again" and got lil booise...wtf happened to music?

  • I always say "off" after a certain word in the chorus.

  • Lucahjin's taste in music is awesome.

  • You know a band is going to be amazing when their debut album is as solid as this one. Five out of five for CBAT. Amazing.

  • In my Hall of Fame, Steeley Dan is one of the top 50 rock bands of all time. The quality of their body of work is solid, their sound unique, musicianship, song writing skills second to none.

  • Stupefacente!
