I have had this happen, it's a baby, just turfed out of the nest. The beak open and the noise it was making is the same thing they do when they are begging their parents for food, lol. He thinnks yer his uncle!
@elvenwoor It's a raven, a crow would never get that close to a person. If you want to know the differences between them you can watch: youtube.com/watch?v=guBwMUAWAJI
My Great Uncle Ted had a raven sharing his life for almost 30 years. I grew up with her around. She disappeared the day before Ted died in 1980, and never came back.
@tacfoley As a cultural anthropologist and practicing Asatru I believe she didn't disappear, but she left to ready a place for him in the halls of your ancestors. Some ancient cultures believe crows and ravens are the messengers of the gods, and collectors of the souls of the departed, they in sense guide them to rest in the afterlife. In Native American mythology is was Raven who gave the gift of fire to man. They are not negative omens like some think. Just some food for thought :).
Edit, I use "Native American Mythology" as a general term as each tribe has it's own rich cultural beliefs and mythology, I cant remember the tribe in particular that held that belief, so I chose to be more generalistic.
@ToonaKasseroll Thanks, Toona. Very nice of you. Many have complained that I sound creepy, especially on the How to Pet a Wild Raven clip. I am inclined to agree with them. Cheers!
New Zealand Keas, another highly intelligent bird, are often just as fearless around people- especially when food's involved. You'll make friends fast if you offer such glorious rewards as roast beef sandwiches. :)
You truly are With out a doubt IMO the luckiest person i have ever seen...Not only did this Raven take a liking to you and hang out with you for a bit..Theres also the Pigeons and the squirrel..And you saving the 2 birds from the pond...So amazing..If I had any of those Experiences i would be so Happy! These Videos are also funny xD
They can be very naughty. We had one in our neighborhood when I was a kid that would actually peck kids on the hands and take candy, lunch or whatever food they had. He was friendly until you tried to say no.
Ravens are smart, man. It looks like he figured out the zipper on your bag and the cap on your bottle, but wasn't strong enough for either. I hope you brought this guy home and made him your BFF.
lmafo whats with all the problem with cussing? i've seen so popular videos that have cussing on it and people just find it funny. and then a video shows up about a bird and the guy cusses and it's a big deal? weird.
Thanks for posting this, man. I used to live near an incredible amount of ravens and they were always nosing about and visiting. After moving I haven't seen one in ages. They are awfully demanding fuckers, though, aren't they?! haha
I love how people care about language on THIS video and yet there are thousands of other videos on youtube that have cuss words and you don't see people complaining about it.
@zSIlentNinjaz It's odd isn't it? I thought raven fans would be more open. Most are, but I am always surprised by the scoldings. People are funny critters!
Dude...I don't know what those comments were about, but you and the Raven cracked me up! :D Obviously, that little guy took a major liking to you, and it wasn't just because of being fed. I come into contact with Ravens and Crows all the time, and I would love to have one as a companion. It's incredibly rare for a Raven to be so close to a human the way it was with you, definitely a good sign ;) Hey, Raven might even be one of your Spirit Animals. You should check it out :D
Ahahahaha "Don't you have somewhere to be?" Ravens got those meetings to attend right? XD
Still he was totally fearless because you fed him, which commonly happens with wild animals. It can be cute but it also can cause problems.... there are monkey troops in Japan which attack hikers who have food on them to steal it, and keeping food in your car while your camping can invite bears to break in. Not to mention that a lot of human food isn't that good for animals.
people who believe in censoring "swear words" shoudl automatically be sent to war. so that their sheltered lives become more mature and can handle the real world instead of making a fuss over thigns that dont matter at all.
Ravens are crows. Every bird belonging to the genus corvus is generally referred to as a crow, including jackdaws and rooks. Ravens are just more romanticized.
@SeminarioMAE seriously? Get a life you fucking nazi! ...fucker. Anyway, about this video. It seems to me this bird was for sure probably someone's pet who either escaped or was set free.

@musique1975 It is intelligent, and that's why the guy was right in not sharing any food. If the bird learns that it can get food from humans, it will target other people in the future. Maybe even children.

this is really wierd... I'm amazed you didnt understood what happend back there. The Raven just wanted some food and for some reason, considered you a mother or something, thats why he opens his mouth when you pet him (other video). Anyway, next time you find yourself in this kind of situation just be a good sport and feed the poor creatures, these amazing situations that nature creates are unique, you should be happy you were lucky enough to encounter that. Btw the raven is really cute :)
@WeAreChuckNorris PLEASE read the comments above yours. It already ate half my sandwich, wanted the rest. There are 4 or 5 other related videos. I go so far as to cut up a water bottle so it can drink. Glad you liked the bird. You have compelled me to change the text on this clip. Will include something about feeding it. Cheers!
@snardlefarb LOL....Both you and the raven are cute, he loves you in its way and you love him in your way. :) It's amazing it hung out with you that close, very very special, i wish I would have this chance to get that close to any of them. :) Great experience you had.
As a former student of Berndt Heinrich, the most imminent corvidologist on the planet, I assure you that Corvus Corax, the common raven, has the largest brain per cranial capacity ratio of any bird, making it the most intelligent. All corvids, including crows, jays, magpies, and nuthatchers are incredibly intelligent. Read Berndt Heinrichs "Mind of a Raven", or "Ravens in Winter", and you will see the complex experiments he created to test their intelligence. Amazing!
@1000vox I and many others are not sanguine about whether or not brain size means anything,I believe this data is still contravertable( is that a word?) however I could never disagree with the fact that ravens are incredibly intelligent!
@calvinoism1 Actually, brain size alone means little. It is the RATIO of brain size per cranial capacity that determines intelligence. Essentially, look at it this way: Avian evolution gave the vast majority of birds more cranial capacity than needed, so that the various species would have "room to grow" over future generations. The fact that the raven has "filled up" its cranial capacity more than any other bird in the world indicates that it has evolved faster and more completely.
that is one smart ass raven, the problem solving is immense! using his beak to open the bag but how? he knows you have to "unzip it" and with the water bottle you have to "twist and turn" pretty smart if you ask me
their intelligence (most corvidae) make them absolute pains in the field/garden. they have come to recognize me as the person who hits metal shovels together and throws stones to scare them from my corn bed. it only took one huge episode of their dive-bombing me to get to the corn and my retaliating to get the message. now they fly away as soon as they see me in the garden.
Opportunities to get this close to wildlife are very rare in most people's lives. I guess this raven might have had previous handouts from other people. Great video, thanks! Except for the unnecessary profanity, not that I was offended by it.
Magpies are even smarter. They even recognize themselves in mirrors and as far as I know they are the only birds that do. I recently saw how two big ones lured a fat cat away from a just out of the nest young at the risk of their own lives. Also the second young helped. The already slightly dazed victim hid slowly in some prickly bushes while the others drew the cats attention. Pretty amazing the communication that went on between them. They clearly all knew what they were doing.
@isleofyew1 Great story, very informative, thanks for taking the time to write. While we don't have magpies around here, there are plenty of crows and ravens. They never cease to amaze. Cheers!
We get a lot of magpies near my house, sometimes we'll see a good dozen of them in the tree across the road. My cat usually plays with them when one would visit our garden (trying to pounce, but not succeeding!). Once, i looked outside because i could hear my cat crying for help. He was surrounded by four magpies! One was on the fence, two in the apple trees and another approaching him. He looked so scared! I think he learnt his lesson about the magpies! haha
@hopintheroflcopter Great story! All the corvids are incredibly smart, protective and loyal. They are also seemingly fearless. Would have loved to have this critter as a companion. Cheers!
@snardlefarb They are very smart! It's such a shame many people see them as pests or scavengers, they're probably a lot smarter than the people that look-down on them! haha
I love corvids, i always hope i'll find an injured/abandoned infant corvid one day so i can befriend it and nurse it back to health (we've got a big enough garden!). I'd love to have a companion like the one in your video!
@snardlefarb also, I imagine, like dogs and cats, it will never have had enough food; it wants more;l and more; and more..... anything it can get its beak on
@snardlefarb from the little (although probably quite a lot more than the average) I know about animal psychology: the Raven didn't really give a shit whose sandwich that was; it wanted it; when you started speaking it probably thought you were vocalizing... like birds do; probably couldn't make out what you saying; so he thought he'd make some sort of sounds in return... just maybe that would calm you down.... in his mind...
lol it's just like "I DON'T CARE IF IT'S YOUR STUFF, I'M FRICKIN' HUNGRY!"

Amazing!

@1000vox Thank you for this intelligent, informative comment. Will look into Heinrich's work.

@1000vox I and many others are not sanguine about whether or not brain size means anything,I believe this data is still contravertable( is that a word?) however I could never disagree with the fact that ravens are incredibly intelligent!
calvinoism1 4 months ago
@calvinoism1 Actually, brain size alone means little. It is the RATIO of brain size per cranial capacity that determines intelligence. Essentially, look at it this way: Avian evolution gave the vast majority of birds more cranial capacity than needed, so that the various species would have "room to grow" over future generations. The fact that the raven has "filled up" its cranial capacity more than any other bird in the world indicates that it has evolved faster and more completely.

@1000vox That makes more sense to me- thanks.

The Common Raven is the smartest of all corvids.
Smartest bird ever.
I have an African grey and he recognizes himself in a mirror. They are also very smart .

that is one smart ass raven, the problem solving is immense! using his beak to open the bag but how? he knows you have to "unzip it" and with the water bottle you have to "twist and turn" pretty smart if you ask me

their intelligence (most corvidae) make them absolute pains in the field/garden. they have come to recognize me as the person who hits metal shovels together and throws stones to scare them from my corn bed. it only took one huge episode of their dive-bombing me to get to the corn and my retaliating to get the message. now they fly away as soon as they see me in the garden.

He's awesome! How do you tell the difference between a large crow and a raven? I had a crow, but looking at this guy he might have been a raven.

They like shiny stuff a lot, so maybe it was just trying to get the shiny zipper thingy.

Cheers!

@snardlefarb Great video!

Cheers!
snardlefarb 9 months ago
@snardlefarb They are very smart! It's such a shame many people see them as pests or scavengers, they're probably a lot smarter than the people that look-down on them! haha
I love corvids, i always hope i'll find an injured/abandoned infant corvid one day so i can befriend it and nurse it back to health (we've got a big enough garden!). I'd love to have a companion like the one in your video!
I saw this video yesterday, i was amazed!:

@snardlefarb also, I imagine, like dogs and cats, it will never have had enough food; it wants more;l and more; and more..... anything it can get its beak on
bbphnix 9 months ago
@snardlefarb from the little (although probably quite a lot more than the average) I know about animal psychology: the Raven didn't really give a shit whose sandwich that was; it wanted it; when you started speaking it probably thought you were vocalizing... like birds do; probably couldn't make out what you saying; so he thought he'd make some sort of sounds in return... just maybe that would calm you down.... in his mind...
