For all of Galento's provado when it came to the crunch he didn't have the heart to answer the bell such was the beating he was taking for the Jewish Baer.
Yeah Ron Howard did portray Baer as a monster. For his Hollywood movie. Hmmmmmmm let's see what makes a better story. Wow that's a real conundrum. And I mean cmon the guy killed multiple people!
@futuermarine - first off he didn't kill 'multiple people' and second you obviously don't know dick about Baer, and can't be bothered to educate yourself, or you wouldn't make the 'wow, duhhhh" statement ! Stop being like the rest of the sheep future jarhead (what an apt monikor), throwing out the same ignorant bullshit lies about him over and over ...
i read in jackie gleason's biography that while having a drink in a new york bar, tony galento was also at the bar but gleason didn't know who he was, he was mouthing off, making a jerk of himself and gleason told him to shut up, not knowing who he was. an arguement started and gleaso challenged him to step out in the alley. gleason said he came too about 10 minutes later, a friend said didn't you know who that was. jackie found out the hard way.
It's prejudicial for someone to put down a Jewish Hall of Fame. Sure, Jewish people are more intellectually-oriented, but there have been Jewish Olympic champs - even in (amateur) wrestling! Also remember boxing greats like Barney Ross, the subject of a fine 1950's movie, and Maxie Rosenbloom!
So, do the research before you slander someone, rediculousnicholas!
He replied 'I'll moida the bum' when asked his opinion on Shakespeare. Who the fuck does that?!?! Deserves a ninety foot golden statue in his remembrance.
@jimmynablee Don't be so sure. George would have beaten Galento no doubt, but I know guys like Two Ton Tony. They're natural brawlers and almost impervious to pain. Big George was one of the strongest heavyweights but Galento may have been even stronger. It would been a battle all the way and nobody wants to risk his crown fighting a mauler like Galento.
@MrRoyalFatness Given your name you must that fat guys can be very strong. Look at the Russian weight lifters as to George vs Two Ton Tony no contest George easily, but in an arm wrestling contest Sumo wresting, dead weight lift or bench press? I'm not sure George would win those. Better fighter,of course. Stronger ? I'm not so sure.
George is stronger in the sense that you can't dominate him in the clinch. In some of George's fights, you'll see him toying with grown men. He's a trained athlete, but not a strength athlete. As far as boxers go, George remains one of the naturally strongest men to ever step in a ring.
@Doderhultarn89 Yeah right. Galento would have mauled you and fouled you for a round or two. Then he would have hit you with that left hook and you would have awakened in the locker room.
@MaxiesGal Thank you for saying that. And Opie will be Opie forever, no matter how many dumb movies he makes...
As for Baer, great fighter, one of the hardest hitters of all time. The old boxers with no gloves said Baer hit as if he wasn't wearing (the more or less useless) 4oz gloves they used when boxing was 'officiated.'
And Baer setup one of the best Counters, a lot like Frazier did, he slapped away the jab with his right hand, and came in with a big left. Great fighter.
he made baer into a monstor. howard is a filthy liar. he portrayed bare as someone who was proud of he death, while in reality, baaer supported the man's wife and children afterwards. howard is s filthy liar without a conscience
Nobody telegraphed a punch like Galento.....you had a 10 second notice that the underhand right was on it's way. Max should have put him out in 2 rounds but he was lazy in the ring as usual and missed about 50% of his rights. Galento fought Max's brother Buddy in the next fight and was beaten a round sooner, in the 7th.
Great post. It's a shame that more footage of Buddy is not available. The first fight he had with Louis in D.C. was legendary. Referee Art Donovan was drunk during that fight, because there was bad weather during the day and he figured the fight would be canceled. He was found sitting at a bar and told that the fight was on.
@Mr711476 - Check out the FAQs page of my site, listed at my main channel page, and you'll learn how it came to be that Baer was unfairly blamed for Schaaf's death. I also have a full page on Campbell and his life.
You could tell that they were fighting on Galento's home turf...the crowd was cheering for Max. I understand that after this fight Max's kid brother Buddy gave Galento such a beating that Tony refused to come out for the 6th round.
Just wanted to let Maxie's fans know that, based on some family history info I provided to the International Jewish Sports Hall of Fame, Max Baer will be among its inductees for 2010.
@rediculousnicholas - LOLOLOL, it IS curious, I mean why break any HOF down ? It kinda dilutes the importance of the award. Of course usually the peeps nominated for these honors are already dead so what do they care ? =0
Yeah, I mean he knocked Louis down during the days when every fighter was scared of Joe ! 'Course Louis then proceeded to wipe the floor with him. LOL, I don't think 'controlled diet' was in Tony's vocabulary. Wasn't his quote that he trained on beer and beef or ... sumptin'???
I agree. Galento was very strong. Like Babe Ruth and Mickey Mantle, who knows what they would have done if they only took care of themselves. Galento almost knocked out Joe Lewis once. I guess Joe wore him out because the fight only lasted about four rounds.
Lip Reader ? I have seen the begining portion of this fight before, Your video is picking up the fight in round 3, I have seen the fighter instruction from another video, and Tony Clearly states to the ref that he wants Max to fight a clean fight..maybe you can come across that portion of the fight..THANKS
During ring instructions, Galento tells the ref to make sure Max fights clean..galento then go's out to fight a dirty fight against Max and angers Max to punish him until the fight is stopped
Galento looks unskilled, but it was a different game back then. You can see all the rough and foul tactics Galento constantly uses that would never be allowed in the ring today. That's the difference and why an "unskilled" guy like him could make a big impact, and tear people up. Obviously he could hit, too. Glad Baer (among others) beat the stuffing out of the big oaf.
Truly, you're a poet, Citizen, nicely written ! I love the part where the announcer says, "Tony calls Baer a big bum ... Baer calls Tony a few things too !" and jeez even if you're real poor at lip reading, he's saying alot more than 'bum' !!
No kidding ! I think fights today are stopped waaaay too soon. So what if the guy's a little groggy or is bleeding all over the place, that's the point !
Sometimes the fight should be stopped, if the ref or doctor calls it. When a man takes more than five uncontested blows it's time for the ref to step in. In 1962 Benny Paret was hit with approximately 18 uncontested blows and died.
I've worked in boxing and have never met a man who set into the ring to end the life of his opponent. They are good and honest sportsmen but if the ref doesn't call stop, they will continue to swing into their opponent with full force.
Agreed, but I do think many modern fights are stopped too early. I have noticed in recent years that often the ref is content to let it go on longer, but the ring doctor or a fighter's corner stops it.
Hindsights' 20/20, but sure, we could reference Kim-Mancini, Griffith-Paret, and even go back to Campbell-Baer, all of which I know the stories of in detail. But those were particularly brutal. I'm saying that many modern fights are in no way life threatening, the fighter is a little whoozy, or gets knocked down once, and the fight is stopped. The only kink in the modern works is the Vasquez-Marquez fights. Those are insane from start to finish, why aren't they stopped ! !
I never really liked Galento as a fighter, but the guy had a T.N.T. punch and looked bad. But the guy had a great record. I was glad Baer was the old Baer when he licked Tony. But the guy had a punch that would start from the floor and upward till it met with someone's chin. The slob was good though.
ptidjk: Your wrong about Galento. He had a dynamite punch that could floor anyone. Just look at his ring record, never knocked out until Louis and Baer. The guy looked bad, but was very dangerous, he almost k.o. Louis.
Yeah he could punch but he was a fat slob and had no skill aside from a lucky punch Look at him. I fought professionally for five years and I know skill when I see it. Tony weas a hard puncher but fat slow and uncoordinated.
ptkjk: I also fought for 3 years, till i got hurt badly. You never saw any of Galento's fights other than on YOUTUBE. In the early 30's he was fast and a great counterpuncher. Many fighers were scared to fight him. I saw on 16mm film when he fought Nova and put Lou in the hospital. Nova was the A.A.U.champion and said Tony was stronger and faster than Louis. Yes, i know Louis was a shuffler.
