10 miles east of Eagle River Wi, on Oct 30, 2011 while sitting in my screen porch facing north, around mid day I heard a short low rumbling sound followed by my house & porch making creeking noises. Lasted about 5-8 seconds.

As far as I know, there is no mining activity happening in Vilas or Forest Counties.

I read somewhere that the earth has grown in the past... and these cracks in different parts of the world, north america, south america, new zealand = at the borders of the great pacific ocean, are much visible... it had not to happen with earthquake events...

This bears many of the hallmarks of a cryoseismic event, singular cracking and vertical displacement. Michigan is one those areas and in that locale.

I would look into the activities of any possible oil or gas company activity in the near by area. I wouldn't be a bit surprised to find an oil company "Fraking" somewhere near by. Most likely with in 20 miles of this area. This lady, does she draw her water from a well on the property? If she does she should have her water tested regardless. Even a naturally occurring event like this can release things in to the water shed that shouldn't be there. Fraking needs to stop.

Very interesting! All I can guess is that 1. since they had tons of rain right before this event, maybe an aquifer filled beyond its limit under ground, and pushed up the earth... If this is true, it COULD settle back down if they have a drought (water emptying the cavity in the earth, and then the raised part sinks back down.

OR 2. Some type of local earthquake... but USGS didn't report anything.. odd indeed.

I live in upper Michigan and frequently rappel down the sinkholes. BE CAREFUL! Looks like you MAY be witnessing the birth of a karst or sinkhole. Those same cracks can be found at the sinkholes in Alpena County. I would sure like to visit those cracks you found.

@ReadyPrepper This isn't a sink hole, the ground lifted up over 5 feet. Nothing sank but lifted... Look at the trees, they didn't fall into anything, they lifted up and away..

@jsnasselin Got it bro! I was just explaining how those same cracks and lifted ground can also be found at the sinkholes in my county. It was just a heads up...nothing more. Even so, I wouldn't go walking around there after dark without a flashlight without knowing the area. Sinkholes happen without warning :-)

@jsnasselin --If the Limestone under ground is honeycombed in that location it is a candidate for collapse. Nothing may ever collapse there, but the same attributes in that location mimic the Bruski and Twin Sinks in Alpena County.
