This is my favourite Sonny Boy song-wish I had the voice to sing it too (apart from the harp)-I think all harp players have had that experience (being f'd by the band) ha ha
I'm a real beginner at harp but not at music in general. Thank you for this video. I can see that early Rice MIller would be a great way to get into the basics of phrasing. Great choice!
@KudzuRunner The Ybirds version of Pontiac Blues is the very 1st song I learned on the harp over 35 yrs. ago. Yeah, the band is WAY off on that intro. The cut I really like from that is "I Dont Care No More" Sonny Boy alone with his harp,no backing ," harp solo full of soul" there too. He was one of the only harpists ever that did this with any regularity. But his crown jewel is "Sonny Boy's Harmonica Boogie" from the Euro "Folk Blues" tours. Have you tackled this on your vids? THANX!
You've got a fine sound. If I were you, I'd work on two things: slowing down your vibrato, making it deeper and slower; and exerting a little more "pull" when you bend your notes. I don't mean bending them further down; I mean pulling a little harder, whether you're bending them a little or a lot.
Guess I'm a newbie so might have missed your memoir...however, I did learn a lot from your bio page. I am impressed with your enthusiasm, committment and passion to this music. Have a nice holiday Adam.
Wow! Have not tuned in for a while but this was a great lesson. I might have to go back to regular coffee instead of decaf to try this. Just kidding. Love your energy. An interesting vid for you to do one day is tell your YT fans a little about yourself. How you got started etc.
Didn't I do that early on? I guess I told so much in my memoir, MISTER SATAN'S APPRENTICE, that I didn't think I needed to spill it all again. But I'll rethink.
That was awesome man, thanks again for another great video! Just a beginner harp player here myself but enjoy watching some of this harder stuff even if I can't do it yet, haha!
Merry Christmas Adam!!!!!!!! Hope you are well and thank you for this very cool lesson. "Solid intermediate?" That sounds like a USDA rating for harp players, LOL! I'm still shooting for "perfectly acceptable" The chimney season is about done for the year, i'll be tuning in more often. NTJ
you are my santa blues... today you got me into a great grove. i try to play for 18 months and this lesson was the best i ever had. i can bend and know how the harp works and the scales.White boy or man 56 here but i have no grove to work on and could not keep playing i sometime have to stop just run out of moves.today i am able to keep playing. keep up the good work
Thanks!! I've been trying to teach myself how to play blues harmonica for the past year. I've searched the web and listened to a lot of other lessons but none of them come close to being as good as yours. These are great, please keep it up.
I just got my first Sonny Boy Williamson cd a couple of days ago, and I was a bit disappointed. "Sonny Boy Williamson His Best" the 50th anniversary collection... just as a first impression, I think he's really great and everything, but he uses the same patterns a lot, doesn't he? Maybe it's just me. Anyway, I found Junior Wells' "Hoo doo man blues" to be much more interesting. (I've not listened to much harp masters yet...just those two and Little Walter).
Hi Adam ahhh Sonny boy lessons great stuff Adam I have wondering when you would be doing some of his .. well done keep the record series coming I love them .. apart from finding out things .. you are turning me on to other players as well who I had not heard of ..
What an awesome lesson! I'm definitely going to woodshed the hell out of this one after the holiday (so if you're reading this Gussow - a future Tradebit lesson would be huge man). I think this would be a great solo harp/singing jam for the street corner. Can't wait to hear Gussow shred some of Sugar Blue's high note riffs.
Yes my favorite Sonny Boy song. Check out the Magic Dick version on Bluestime CD. He does it in Bb using a Eb harp. I also performed this song at Gindicks Irvine jam camp Sunday jam. I could have used this lesson. Also check out Magic Dicks 9 below Zero on the same CD.
This is a seven star lesson, really amazing, you were really into it Adam. Are you going to do the tab on Pontiac Blues? I had my harp out and will be watching this one over and over again. I realized that you switched from C to F harp and was using it at the end : ^ )) Thanks doc dc
Brilliant video-thanks Adam!

Hi Adam,
I saw you drinking a cup of coffee,
is it ok to drink coffee (probably with milk & sugar) just before blowing into the harp?
muselblues 4 years ago 2
Yes, my god, it's no problem at all. Whiskey is good, too. Just not before noon--unless you're on a train, enroute.
KudzuRunner 4 years ago 2
OMG Adam, don't drink coffee with milk & sugar! It makes your harmonica dirty! Polish beer is the best to clean this sin...
