TR: No, Tavis. This subject matter is now diametrically opposed to what Nine Inch Nails is about. Ergo, I feel that having matured for the past 24 years, - and regardless of it’s artistic value or symbolic representations - at this point, it’s highly unlikely I could incorporate “fist fuck” into the lyrical content in a way that’s not only complementary to the music, but also to a degree that listeners could find accommodating.
its interesting...trent talks of all the fear and self-loathing he went through...and yet, could "hurt" or anything that is so uniquely his have been written if he were a less neurotic person? is it wrong for the world to in a way benefit from him suffering?
I have so much respect for Tavis Smiley. I've never heard of him before this interview but he asked some of the most eloquently put questions I've ever heard from interviewers nowadays. He asked, he listened, and he created new questions based on the answers he was given- in short, he was *listening*. How is it that an interviewer who listens to his guests comes as a refreshening surprise? Great interview. I love trent.
@suncancer It's on PBS i think around the same time as Jay Leno ............ Trent is a musical Savant. Poor Tavis has no idea how great trent is and what all he has done in his career
finally intelligent interviewers, mature themes.. look where Trent has gotten.. he didnt deserve any less :) glad hes over the worst time of his life (just feel bad because there wont be another downward spiral :()
I've been watching interviews with Trent for a long time, and this is a great one, not just because it's Trent divulging some great, eloquent answers and information, but also because the interviewer (Tavis) is fantastic. He's respectful, interested, and doesn't try to exploit Trent's past and focus on drugs and self pity. With this guy and Charlie Rose I just want to say: PBS, you're doing it right.
I met Trent right after the release of the Aug '85 film Real Genius starring Val Kilmer. He had not seen the movie yet and I quoted some of it that I thougth was funny. (After Val Kilmer’s character Chris makes a pass at Deborah Foreman’s character she replies) Can you hammer a six-inch spike through a board with your penis? He thought the logo NIN would look better than SIS and Nine Inch Nails was born that day
How nice to be able to take "a year or so" off to "think things over". Given that about 1 in 5 Americans is either unemployed (official government numbers) or unemployed and have given up trying to find a job (the true numbers).
@OroborusFMA Yea, he's worked his ass off to get here for 25 years. Don't impose your insecurities and jealousy on someone not only intelligent but talented enough to create a successful career for himself.
The Chemical Brothers did not score Fight Club. It was The Dust Brothers. Get your info straight before slipping skittles into high school girls' zimas at the football after-parties, ya fkn loser :D
wow Social Network looks so terrible !!! Eisen-smthng is a good actor and all, but what a piece of garbage this looks like ! My first look at it actually...
The Chemical Brothers did a GREAT job on fight club
Trent is a genius in the music industry, but Fight Club had it's own unique soundtrack that stands out well enough. Fincher knows who to choose for his music.
I didnt like the social network either ... or the soundtrack - what he did with Lynch was far far better and before that cover of joy divisions, " Dead Souls " for the Crow and , " Burn " for Natural Born Killers..
I sometimes wonder what would happen if his relationship does not go well in the future. We would probably receive something far more vicious and disillusioned than the concept of The Downward Spiral.
@Reptilectricful One can only hope.... his best music was the 90s... just because he was more insecure then doesnt detract from what he did up until the awful song deep , and then onto fraggle rock
I love this man. Yea, you may love visceral, dynamic reactions of guitar mechanics and it's aesthetic appeal. It's much more about the artistic lyrics and unique music which makes it interesting.
Poor Trent having to put up with such bullshit they have always shunned him at award shows even though no one else could even touch him talent wise when it comes to music.. I can't even believe it is as though he doesn't even recognize that in himself..If he only knew _^j^_
Tavis is a very clever guy as well and does his research. You can bet there`s nothing he didn`t know about Trent Reznor when he started this interview.I`m a long time NIN fan,and it`s cool to see Trent back on the scene in a big way.Way to go.
@RpgExposition Why does his race have anything to do with it? I'm black & I have every "Halo", I've seen NIN in concert 4 times & have a nine inch nails tattoo on my wrist. So what does Tavis being black have anything to do with him interviewing him again? Incase you didn't realize it, black people listen to nine inch nails as well. MKAY? THANKS!
@RpgExposition You think because he's black he doesn't know anything about Trent or nin? It's called research, honey. Do yours and you wont sound so ignorant in the future. Peace & Love.
@HelloJennyification You sir, made my day. Its people like you that help me remember blacks can actually talk without sounding ghetto. you are well spoken, and have an exellent taste in music. Im not at all racist but i think the black community has room to improve and act a little more professional, like you do. Its a shame that a decent amount of blacks have to be brought up in ghettos and pretty much forced to live a life filled with crime around them.
@upfrontcascade "you are well spoken" As many comedies have made fun of white people for saying stupid shit like that, I would think you would know better. Also "Im not at all racist but..." Nothing that comes after that is ever good. and you would do well to stop judging the black community by the media, especially bet, which isn't even owned by black people anymore. also, "A Guide to Racism 101 for Clueless White People, Written by a Slightly Less Clueless White Person" google it.
@HelloJennyification I agree. I'm also black and a big fan of rock/metal music and hope to get into the music career soon. The color of your skin shouldn't have anything to do with what type of music you like.
@HelloJennyification right dont listen to that idiot. whats funny most dont think about is rock music evolved from jazz music (a black invention). Rock probably wouldnt exist if it wasnt for the advent of jazz. I love to think about that everytime some hardcore rocker cracker is jamming out and dissing black people. xD

Thank You.. Have you ever heard of the suspension of disbelief? Google it and tell me that your Unaware of your carelessness. wait this is for your benefit
@W2R3J Hey cunt, all I said was that he had probably never heard of him. I never said anything about the fucking questions or script. Now as ryanfoley123 told me, "Go fuck yourself"
Hope the band goes back on tour and plays all of their biggest songs... Every Day Is Exactly the Same, Hurt, Something I Can Never Have, Terrible Lie and many more!!!
@FinalConflict99 I'd say we should give hiim more time, and that if we wait long enough, the time he think its necessary, we wont be disappointed!!! I mean, the guy is a genious, lets trust in him!
I have always liked the scores to Fincher's films. Fight Club, Seven, The Social Network, and more. There is a great deal of similarity between the Fight Club score done by The Dust Brothers and The Social Network score and they are both great. Trent is an amazing musician and a true visionary.
i've heard negative things about his personality, but one can only speculate... i really liked his works from his start all through the 90s, capped off by one of my favorite albums ever, The Fragile. ive heard he doesnt like it anymore which i think is absurd.
@aphexaic3213 the reason trent does not like the fragile is because it brings a dark time in his life especially the song la mer it was a suicide song he wanted to kill himself thats why its not his best memory on that album.
@issaacgooser Actually, Trent is one of the best musicians to grace the music scene. He records everything by himself, with the exception of the drums on With Teeth. He has a certain tone that other artists cannon grasp, originality. And best of all, he has aspergers.
Great interview. Trents a clever man. Love the social network sound track. Deep, reflective and brooding. Very much like the dark trip hop groups Massive Attack, Portishead,Tricky, Kruder and Dorfmeister, Amon Tobin, Unkle, Allflaws
I also like him as a person, he is very intelligent and not brainwashed and he is independent and very talented in his trade and also a good hearted person (like when he raised 800,000 dollars for that heart transplant) I mean damn the list goes on.
I'm happy for Trent man, crawling out of the whole and gaining more confidence in himself. YOU ARE AWESOME TRENT, YOU INSPIRE ME!! I honestly can't say I know how it is, (Trent's past) but I just love his music, it's sooo original and soothing and exciting and inspiring and contravercial all in one. I LOVE IT AND CAN"T GET ENOUGH!!
I heard a story about Reznor n his buddies taking Manson out into the middle of nowhere, stripping him naked, blindfolding him and letting him find his way back. This was apparently right b4 Manson got big.
No offense but Trent is getting very BORING! He's no longer amusing, unpredictable, and interesting like he use to be. And by the way why is he making music for that crappy corny Facebook movie? He should get involved and make music for a better Indie movie which would suit him better.
@RussX5Z You mean he's growing the fuck up? Yep. Perhaps you should do the same. He's very interesting and well-spoken (as per usual) and I always like hearing about his creative process and what his mindset was, especially being an artist myself.
@RussX5Z you thought this was kind of boring too? i also dont think it matters what movie hes making music for as long as he got recognition for it (not that he really needed it if you know what i mean, i would thing being in NIN would be enough for me) im alright with it , also he said he was sober so maybe thats why hes ZZZzzzZZZzzzzz but who cares id rather hear a boring trent reznor than another lame but lively celeb or star fucker
He's gotten married and he's gotten kind of fat like the typical husband. But nonetheless, I have so much respect and admiration for Trent. He truly is a musical genius. I'm glad he won the Oscar. Who ever knew that his work would get the recognition and be paid off in the film industry.
I love NIN i have my own solo music thing im trying and trent is my big inspiration im not the best in the world but could i have other peoples opinion on it? its at myspace /rankoffall
Wish I understood myself as well as Trent does. good stuff.

I have always liked the scores to Fincher's films. Fight Club, Seven, The Social Network, and more. There is a great deal of similarity between the Fight Club score done by The Dust Brothers and The Social Network score and they are both great. Trent is an amazing musician and a true visionary.

i've heard negative things about his personality, but one can only speculate... i really liked his works from his start all through the 90s, capped off by one of my favorite albums ever, The Fragile. ive heard he doesnt like it anymore which i think is absurd.
aphexaic3213 9 months ago
@aphexaic3213 the reason trent does not like the fragile is because it brings a dark time in his life especially the song la mer it was a suicide song he wanted to kill himself thats why its not his best memory on that album.

Trent is a poser and a fraud.
issaacgooser 9 months ago

Very interesting and intelligent answers. I remember reading he really wanted to work w/movie scores a while ago, like it was a true goal...

I heard a story about Reznor n his buddies taking Manson out into the middle of nowhere, stripping him naked, blindfolding him and letting him find his way back. This was apparently right b4 Manson got big.
Ne body else heard that story?
mbelma6329 10 months ago
Or maybe he should do whatever the fuck he wants.

No offense but Trent is getting very BORING! He's no longer amusing, unpredictable, and interesting like he use to be. And by the way why is he making music for that crappy corny Facebook movie? He should get involved and make music for a better Indie movie which would suit him better.
RussX5Z 11 months ago
@RussX5Z thanks! i agree. except i don't care about offending nin fans. they do all but suck his peen.
bambisalive 10 months ago
@RussX5Z You mean he's growing the fuck up? Yep. Perhaps you should do the same. He's very interesting and well-spoken (as per usual) and I always like hearing about his creative process and what his mindset was, especially being an artist myself.
phix95 10 months ago

I'd like to learn more about Atticus Ross. He worked with trent on this and the ghosts album.
