I saw one just a couple of days ago, just like this one, in a s mall town in Germany, just on the borders of Switzerland. It was collecting nectar from an azalea. My husband and I marveled at it because we had never seen one before and when I got home, I just had to find out what it was. It is a hummingbird hawk moth.
First time I saw one I thought killer bees! Started asking around and someone said it was this. Glad of that. They are so interesting to watch in my flowers.
when i was at the dragstrip by my brothers house one of these flew into my face and i had no idea what it was. people kept telling me it was a hummingbird but it was actually one of these. they're cool!!
Cool, we saw these at a beach in croatia. They were zooming around though and hard to get a photo of. Cool to know what they're called. Check out earth hour: moths
It is a moth. It just has a long mouth like the beek of a humming bird. It is called the same as your video's title "hummingbird moth". Look it up in wikipedia.
years ago as a kid back in ohio i netted one. before catching it, we all thought it was a hummingbird. found a sphinx moth (thats what is in your video) last night and brought it in for my my indoor cats to chase. not sure where it went, LOL! its here somewhere. it seems so much smaller in size now that i'm an adult.
While we're mentioning hummingbirds, they're is also a species within "hawk moths" that look almost identical to hummingbirds, known as (surprise, surprise) "hummingbird moth's".
And I absolutely agree with that you should always learn something new everyday
They are called Hawk Moths. We had one two days ago and thought it was so cool how a hummingbird could be so small, so we looked it up. The tip-off for me were the antennae sprouting from its head. EW! Look up the hawk moth, they are actually kind of cool.
I guess there is an evolutionary advantage to appear as a Hummingbird...not sure exactly what that would be though....its not as if they are very threatening creatures...Most animals mimic deadly &/or poisonious animals to keep predators away...but some Predators also mimic there own prey, so as to easily get close to them....For instance my species mimics Humans, so as to....whoops Ive said too much...Nevermind that last bit.
These little critters are all over the big State of Texas. They come in various
colors and sizes. Three types are:Hummingbird Clearwing, White-Lined Sphinx moth and Hermit Sphinx moth. They do not bite or harm anything or anyone. I have caught many and rescued several.
i see hummingbird moths all the time at night. the ones i get are extremely wild. you need to shoot them down with a really strong flashlight. they go crazy if you try to catch them with a net!!
This insect (green) took an afternoon by our window. We thought it was a hummingbird and said Luck! as here we say it brings luck and money, but do not believe it. Our son Julian had two or three years old and the insects began to attack because he wanted to touch it. With my wife immediately started trying to remove it with a almoadones. My son screamed scared not understand why you "pegábamos" with the cushions.
And we began to scream in fright. We stayed there for several minutes-of-endless terror. Then I realized it was a bug and not a bird. More screaming! Then the flying bug went whizzing by the window. Julían cried a lot after that. But soon he understood and then we laughed non-stop three long. Never before have we had seen. And that which is common in our province ...
Y nosotros comenzamos a gritar asustados.
I just saw one of these in the backyard feeding off some big red flowers. Ive seen hummingbirds plenty of times and thought this was a baby one until i noticed the antennaes. The one here was more yellowish colored with black sripes and thinner. First time i ever saw one.
Here in Ohio we had them come every night to the petunias. This year NONE. Also no tiger butterflies. They came every year to the petunias also. It has been rainy and cold. The worst summer ever. I miss the adorable little hawkmoths
