People that go to places like guitar center and show off are fulfilling needs somehow; either they are trying to show off their newfound talent, or they are desperate for recognition in something and both need the attention. While I agree that there are plenty of people that don't have the guts to play live that should stop complaining, the point that everyone is making is that its annoying for everyone else because they aren't customers!

You have people walk into your shop and you hurry them to make a purchase, without doing "their thing" and getting a feel for the instrument and how they are going to use it? Some people have to play their songs and their style to know whether or not they 'like' the instrument. Any shop that doesn't let someone do that - I'd certainly give it back to them, say "Have a good day" and walk out. I encourage others to do the same.

While that person is a bit loud and obnoxious...and in particular seems to want to be heard, a lot of people like to get loud on the volume (of the amp) to make sure there aren't any flaws in the instrument. The same for playing fast - some guitars have buzzing frets and other unforeseen problems that can't be found unless you pretty much play every basic note on the fretboard. If they shred...they want to see how it sounds when they shred.

I don't agree. Detecting "buzzing frets" is far more easier and immediate using headphones through a preamp or pedal than it would be by cranking an amp and running lame 80s shred licks for over an hour - and still not buying anything.

I was there last night, and there was a 45 something Van Halen wannabe, that yes, he was good, better than I'll ever be, but I was so disgusted that after 10 mins of being overpowered by his "look at me, look at me" playing that prevented me even tuning my guitar, I left. Unfortunately there are those (male and female) who don't have the courage to form a band or play out so they try to knock off a lame indie song in Guitar Center as if were a valid substitute. They dream that someone will go "dude. I will totally sign you to a million dollar contract". If someone wants to buy an instrument then fine - check it out.But save the amateur hour performances for the family barbecue.
