Yes the story is true. Steve confirmed this on the VH1 Behind music interview from about 1997 or so. I have another version of this live performance from 1987 taped from the Philidelphia Starplex. Of course his voice is beyond real and Jonathan Cain's piano work is so amazing!!! Really great performance.
