In short. Its about a Jacobite victory over the British army. The Jacobites wanted to the Catholic monarchy of Scotland to rule the British throne. The British army wanted the Protestant English monarchy to rule the British throne. Both sides had followers from Scotland, England and Ireland. It was almost like a civil war.

I'm English and I think Scottish music is fabulous, also the Scottish fighting spirit, but one thing worries me: is enough being done to keep alive Scottish culture? How about Gaelic? Why is nobody making comments in gaelic here? Seriously, you lose such a lot by losing a language. If the Israelis could revive hebrew, then surely the Scotts (and Welsh) can do the same for their languages.
There is only about 3 Gaelic schools in Glasgow. My cousin went to one, she speaks Gaelic fluently and shes only 9. Up in the hebridean islands, all the road signs are in Gaelic, just like Ireland :)

Tam your right to a certain extent, but you have to realise that in the time of James IV, the majority of Scots, even in the lowland areas spoke Gaelic as their native tongue. The Spanish ambassador to the Scottish court commented on that fact and his comments were recorded at that time. The loss of a language can happen at at tremendous pace and over a short period of time. The scottish Kings were in line through marriage for the English throne, so English became the language of power.

In short. Its about a Jacobite victory over the British army. The Jacobites wanted to the Catholic monarchy of Scotland to rule the British throne. The British army wanted the Protestant English monarchy to rule the British throne. Both sides had followers from Scotland, England and Ireland. It was almost like a civil war.

I'm English and I think Scottish music is fabulous, also the Scottish fighting spirit, but one thing worries me: is enough being done to keep alive Scottish culture? How about Gaelic? Why is nobody making comments in gaelic here? Seriously, you lose such a lot by losing a language. If the Israelis could revive hebrew, then surely the Scotts (and Welsh) can do the same for their languages.

There is only about 3 Gaelic schools in Glasgow. My cousin went to one, she speaks Gaelic fluently and shes only 9. Up in the hebridean islands, all the road signs are in Gaelic, just like Ireland :)

I know I want independence. But I would like to point out. We already have our independence. England has never, ever had full control over Scotland. They tried to band tartan and the bagpipes, but we still have them. They tried to destroy the clans but they still exist. They tried to kill Gaelic. But yet it fights on. Seriously pal; do a bit of research. There's more than enough to keep us going and in a far better fiscal situation than we're currently in. And lets not forget that Scotland's money wouldn't be getting distributed among 55m odd people, but rather around 5.5m people. Google the case for independence etc. you'll probably be surprised at just how much we have that so few people know about.

The only reason I know of the Corries is i'm old enough to have seen them. Why does BBC Scotland never play them on any of their Celtic Music radio shows. Young Scots are not getting the chance to hear their music.
