@cpro08 I've used a 5/8 wave 2 meter Larsen right now i'm using a 5/8 wave Maxrad. Tuned for 2 meters the RR band still works pretty good. would be better if tuned for the RR but i transmit on 2meters.
nice setup, do you know of a good handheld to listen to rail traffic with ? I have a police scanner but I would like to listen to emergency traffic by my house and rail traffic at the same time thanks.
@lydia308 the popular HT is the Yeasu VX170 or the newer model 270? an older model is VX150. a aftermarket antenna will do alot better. smiley antennas sells antennas for different freqs or get a Diamond SRH77CA 15 inch whip.
I know but there's no other place to put it that's convenient. Only the real expensive radios have detachable faces. none for plain 2 meters. it's easy to see up there and access. if i put it beside the console it would be upside down from the passenger side and harder to see when driving.
The V8000 has great RX to them I have 2 of them one for the truck when I railfan and one for the house. I live in Fort Madison Ia. on the Chilli and Mariclen sub. I just put all my radios on the net today.
Its funny when i see other railroads locals. They tend to use older 4 axle units. NS in my hometown of Greensboro NC uses Six axle wide cabs on many of the turns based out of the area. As many as 3 in combos with older six axle EMD's and GE's, running longhood forward at times. Even the yard and switch jobs have used a single wide-cab.
It's illegal to have a "scanner".. but he SHOULD be a licensed HAM, meaning that when he is using an actual Amateur band Radio, he's licensed by the FCC to operate it. The FCC is a FEDERAL agency, and if he carrys authorization fom them, local government, or "state government" SHOULD have to grin and bear it. I believe it's a form 97 you need from the FCC if they confiscate your radio though! Happy scanning brothers!
rightyou are, That's wht i meant. Sory for the confusion. i AM right about being able to use a radio like this one in your car, if you have an amateur radio license, right?
Yeah, you have to have a liscense and it's ok. Other than that it's a no. The same goes for the state of Florida, and I belive a few isolated counties/cities.
Excellent video. I wish that retail railroad video would have radio traffic and more operations oriented narration. Its also good to hear DS-04, where I live I just get DS-01 Forth Worth, I think DS-04 is Kansas City?
listen man i was just asking you im sorry if i have bothered you if you dont want people to ask you questions or talk to you then disable the comments
I'm sorry if i hurt your feelings. It's just that i always get questions about like what date it was taken for example. I have the date posted in the title on most videos. people get in a hurry and don't read. it gets old.
naw you didnt hurt my feelings but lightin up a little man i understand your point i know that people can be a little stupid but i wasnt i was just looking into those radios thats all
Well to tell you the truth i think thats a grade? so they have to blow the horn, Working for BNSF we have to report you to Rocc if anyone other then a railroad employee is near the tracks, gotta understand after 9/11 things have really changed,
G.T.B is in fact -General Track Bulletin : A notice containing track bulletin restrictions and other conditions affecting train movement.
Here on the Bakersfield sub, i remember one day someone said " I'm fu*ked up " said it like 3 times over the radio, then some supervisor got on and said I'm so and so i demand to know who this is, and the voice came on and said " I'm not that fu*ked up " lol
only for transmitting. lots of railfans are using ham radios and commercial radios just for scanning these days. but it's not hard to get a license in case you meet another railfan on the ham radio. ARRL for more info on ham radio.
depends on what it is i'm listening too but as far as locos or mobile units 15-20 real easy. I've been at neosho rapids and heard trains and RR taxi cabs at Emporia and as far as Ellinor which would be 10-20 miles
also can hear three detectors reliable at emporia for the most part. They are 5 miles each away from emporia. basically my reception is similar to the RR trucks radios
I believe that BNSF on the Emporia Sub runs about at least 65 trains a day through this area of their main line. On the Chillicothe Sub into Chicago, its more like 85 plus.
actually it's about that much here on average. in the past when RR guys gave me train lineups at at the yard office i've counted 80 to 95 trains on peak days. The 95 one was from the late 90's when things started to pick up. nowadays i can't go into the yard office cause of security and liability so i can't get those lineups so i can only guess at how many.
Great video. i've been thinking of getting a radio to know when freight is on my local tracks. I'm on the old New York Central water level route on the New York City boarder and the track is only used for freight at night. Mike
What is that strange noise I keep hearing in between Traffic?

how do you get one of them?
redhotrider57 3 years ago
you can buy them at a radio shop or online. You can't transmit on tx capable bands without an FCC amateur license, however.

I have a Yaesu 857-D in my car which gets shortwave HF plus 2 meters. What frequency do I have to listen to to hear trains? I'd really like to know.
