Living forever would be a curse. I would never want to live forever, even if they offered to do so for free. People would not know what to do with themselves, life would get boring, and there would be no excitement in living. In my opinion, what makes life such a beautiful gift is that we know our mortality and we can cherish every moment we have with those we love. People would go mad or wish to die after a while, if they lived an endless existence.
@Babyboomer92 Yeah but the great thing about life extension technology is that you have the choice to die whenever you want. Plus even if there is a way to stop the aging process of not only ourself, but our universe you still wouldn't live forever because something will happen eventually. I leave it up to individual choice.
I don't think any generation should feel it's duty is to tell the next how to live or what to believe, but the least we can do is leave them a world in which they can thrive. Great video...
I agree that the bible is an awful book and the kind of mentality that wrote it is at this time a mortal threat to our species. At least it is a product of a long time ago, so just maybe the general mental level has improved sufficiently since then to get us through this crucial century. If we make it into 2100 with our world and civilisation intact our descendants may have a chance of realities beyond our wildest imaginings.
Great video! I think what John means here it's not preservation of humanity as we know it,but rather of humanity created even better adapted and stronger species(may be very different from us).If we believe in evolution(as I do),that looking back millions of years we see that our anscestors were not humans, and millions of years hence our descendants will not be humans.Rather than leaving their design to Nature,we'll design them ourselves(epsecially for space colonization). And I agree.
I wonder about people like you ... did you somehow avoid indoctrination (have liberated parents)? ... Or was indoctrination attempted but didn't stick? ... Or were you indoctrinated but fought through it? I'm a mix of the latter two. Anyway, you got here ... and I am pleased that you did. Thank you for your understanding words.
greyhall: what if what if what if... it is people like you that thought Columbus would sail off the edge of the earth... if you take the time to actually LISTEN to what he is talking about - it is not immortality - it is our children and their children's children... and chances are if some religious nut does not blow us up first - there will be a lot of space to expand out into if and when we grasp the technology... chances are the fundies of Islam and Christianity will drag us down fist..
Lol! If people from the year 500 had cellphone, how would they have power it up ?...
At the time we will be able to stop death, we'll also have many other technologies (nanotechnology electronic and biotechnology mixed together) developped so we won't have to work. We'll also be able to store our personality in a computer, switch from virtual to biologic life. Food and many other needs will be provided with nanothech, etc... we should get all this if no dummy believing in a god destroys earth.
there's so much resources still on earth that are unused that its not a problem really, besides the "eternal" existance of the chain of human life does not mean that the population will grow radically in size, as it has happened during the last century..
I understand that having humanity work towards the goal of infinite existence by way of an infinite progression of descendants could lead to greater morality in mankind through realistic goals (unlike the fantasies found in our so called religious books). Nevertheless, Hartung is simply displaying an evolved imperative: live! His "meaning of life" is thus no more "Meaningful" than the fantasy of heaven, it is simply a reflexion of the biological imperative.
With all do respect I cannot but despair at the fact that there are people out there, like you, who have blundered into this cacophony of false notions and precepts. With all do respect, you are on the wrong path. I agree with you on only one thing, the dangerous of religion. I agree that religion may be the chief driving force behind humanities demise, and this fact has been proven several times.
Great video and very eloquently put. And I completely agree. Religion has always been, and is a continuing threat to the very survival of our species. Religion combined with modern weapons of mass destruction is a very frightening combination. I blogged this on my website.
Thank you for your kind words and for your efforts to spread our understanding of the magnitude of the danger that people face from religious beliefs.
I agree that a future course to shed some of the mysticism of the past is necessary ... very thought provoking, and something that has been on my mind for about 6 years now. I've been searching for a path, and writing about it. I'd like to hear your thoughts on how to progress, as a species and without the turmoil that has surrounded such upheavals.
Thanks so much for all your out standing videos. You are a true bastion of sanity.I forward all your posting to every one I know.Hope it will do some good some where.
I'm very impressed with your way of thinking and your brutal honesty. I'm going to check out your website (love the other YouTube videos I've seen you on).

Here's hoping there will be no 'descendants'-the human race overall is the worst thing that ever happened to probably the entire universe.

A very pragmatic outline of what the future looks like. I would argue no point, at this time.
We are all members of humanity, and have only the brains of humans. Progress and morality should be based on human values of justice.
Progress and justice would be acts that are fair, whichever side of the equation you find yourself, just like a good contract, written under the law.
To survive, as a species, we must adopt a similar philosophy as that expressed by John Hartung.

But to say that our only goal for the next thousand years is to find a way of insuring our physical existence is simply absurd.
