  • @itsmesupermosk Thanks for the comment and listening !

    PEACE !

    Urban

  • the original english song was "the unfortunate rake" and it's about a kid who contracts vd and is going to die from it

  • @mmmpoetry A very good comment ! I didn't know that !

Thanks, for the comment and listening !

    PEACE !

  • the song came from england and it became streets of laredo (a country song) and separately a blues song. It's neat to see the evolution of the song

  • Sorry. I just tried to research this and it appears that St. James was a hospital in London for lepers. It was a hotel in Minneapolis and various other places...so take your pick! I do know that how he wants the funeral and burial does NOT sound like London. It sounds like a jazz burial in New Orleans! I like this version more and more as I repeat it. Andy did love music! He had blues player,Joe Seneca and others who were not famous on his show many times. Dillards got a big leg-up from him.

  • @MyMoppet52 Yes, I agree ! St James Infirmary was a Hospital somewhere, I don't know where ?

But your good comment tells the story, Much appreciated !!!

    Peace Sister, Stay Cool !

    Urban

  • I have heard Andy sing with the Dillards, Doc Watson, and others. I have never heard him do this song before. The St. James Infirmary was in New Orleans I have been told. Lots ended up there from card fights, drinking fights, and women fights. Perhaps I was told wrong. I heard Arlo Guthrie sing this in person several times. It is not his type song either and I had chills the entire time! He put so much sadness in his voice. Thank you for this song! I like to hear different versions of songs!

  • Love the images but the singing is like nails on a chalkboard

  • Perhaps you are right, but its an old song, sang by many artists. Andy Griffith isnt perhaps the best, but I wanted this tune on my chanel !

Thanks for the comment and listening !

    Peace Bro !

    Urban in Gothenburg, Sweden

  • No prob! By the way you ever hear the version by Turk Murphy? It's fantastic. I'm sure it must be on YouTube somewhere.

  • Sorry to say I havn't heard that version of the song. I think this one is like the jazz song "Tiger Rag", recorded by many and I've heard many collect, just all "Tiger Rag" recordings.......Perhaps its the same with "St James Infirnary" ??? *smile*

    Peace Bro and thanks !

  • Saint James Infirmary has been handled in SO many different ways by SO many bands. The famous Cab Calloway version, for example, is completely different from Turk's which is completely different from Bob Scobey's, etc. :)

  • You are so right, but we have to live with it. Perhaps I need a "doctorkazoo", to understand my problems, about good songs ???

How many have recorded St James Infirmary Blues ??? I don't know ??? Do you ???

    Doesn't matter.

    Take care my friend !

  • Wait a minute...I wasnt trying to be disrespectful or anything. I was just trying to share some info with a fellow music lover! There have been exactly 5, 892 bands that have recorded Saint James Infirmary Blues. Take care!

  • Well there you see. It aint easy to keep track of all recordings, so thanks for the information !!!

I have just one and the other I play myself, but that doesn't count !*smile*

Take It Easy, But Take It !

  • Oh, man! I'm so glad I found this! It's so good to see other people keepin' such good music alive. ;)

  • Thanks Luna !

I'm here on Youtube, just for one reason and that is to keep the Old Blues Alive !

But also to get in contact with people who have the same taste in music.

    You have !!!

Thanks for your comment and listening !

    Peace and take care !

    Urban

  • Hahaha. Andy Griffith singing "St James Infirmary." Next someone will uncover an old 78 of Barney Fife singing "Got My Mojo Working."

  • Ya, its funny, but true.

Look forward to your suggestion of recording. *smile*

Thanks for the comment and listening.

    Peace !

  • thnx for posting these classics man, I wouldn't be able to find these Gems

  • Hmm, Hmm...Thanks KickingMule..you always have the stuff that from start to finish..makes me grin:)

  • Well Mike,

Blues is fun, at least, it's fun to put pictures to a song, though I'm not english spoken, so sometimes I go wrong, but who cares, as long as the Music is good and this one is good !

Thanks for the comment and listening to this classic song.

    Peace Bro !

  • Andy Griffith swings. Who knew? If you send me an emai addy Ill send you a very hip version done by my buddy, the late Ray Condo who also swung.

  • I wasn't sure it was Andy Griffith, I just knew, he had done some recordings, so I did the upload.

However many of my listeners confirms it is Him !

Thanks for the comment and listening !

    Peace Bro !

  • Another classic tune..had never heard the Andy Griffith version...very sweet indeed. I originally heard this done by Bobby "Blue" Bland in 1961 or 62. I think this song originated from England under the title "The Unfortunate Rake" . Good tune and rendition by Andy...great post KM!!

  • This song has many recorded, but I thought this one was something special, as Andy Griffith is the performer. So, I uploaded.

Thanks for giving me the information.

    Much appreciated !!!

Also, thanks for the comment and listening.

    Peace Brother !

  • Would have loved to see and hear that. Only got the net. No TV cable. Hugh rocks on the piano. Always love it on "House" when he plays a piano diddy at the end. Gonna have to get a few more seasons on dvd. Totally worth $.

  • Wherever you are, you can listen to Andy now, whenever you want !

Thanks for the comment and listening

    Peace !

    Urban

  • Thank You Karen !

It's not a rag, but a wellknown song, which nobody know, who made it up !

But as you say a fantastic tune and I think it has a different sound than the other versions. ( Better, "Smile" ).

I did the upload, cause this one is "a must" on a Blues and Gospel Channel, like mine !

    Peace !

    Hugs over the "Pond" !

    Urban

  • This is a lovely version of the song. Wouldn't expect anything less from my man Urban!

We tried researching the origins of this song a couple of years ago. It's a mighty can of worms I can tell you that much. Found a couple of interesting folk songs we had the music and lyrics for, pre dating recording technology, sung in a minor key and shareing a similar theme. Very deep rabit hole!

  • 1st time i heard this piece,i immediately thought spanish flu of 1918

  • The tune is perhaps a flu in itself, cause everybody know it, but nobody know who made it up !

Thanks for the comment and listening !

    Peace.

    Urban

  • I know Brother !

To trace the origin of this one isn't easy and you are right it's a very deep rabbit hole, perhaps many.

Neverthless, a good song, we all know and can play and sing.

Take Care and Thanks for the comment and listening !

    Urban

  • It has been a good while since I have heard this! Thank you for posting!

    Urban

  • Ya I agree, but on the other hand, the music is alive !

Thanks for the comment and listening !

    Peace !

    Urban

  • What a nice suprise, I love this. I'm gonna be singing this all week.

Thanks for the comment and listening.

    Peace !

    Urban

  • this is andy

he sounds pretty young here,so i would put the rcording date in the early 50's

    of course,the location is Mayberry,NC

  • Is there a bar in Mayberry? I know there is a town drunk, but where does he get his hooch?

  • wasn't it the "old jenkins place" ?....of course, not a bar, just a stillhouse
