Nice review I'm just wondering how to use the neutrik jack on your guitar if you don't mind I would like to know how does it work how do you pull the plug when it's locked thank you very much in advance enjoy your guitar
Great review ! I just don't understand why the maple tops of the Standard or Traditional Les Paul guitars are so different (quality wise). I own a Standard 2008 (Iced Tea) and this guitar has an amazing flame top. But I often see Standard Les Paul guitars that have a poor maple top without any flame figure... Okay it's still a Les Paul and every piece of wood is different but those guitars are expensive and it's not fair...
@RGplayer01 I think it may come down to a matter of taste. I actually prefer a more subtle top. I recently bought a new 2011 Standard in Heritage SB and the top has a very nice mild flame. It's a great player, which is the main reason I bought it, but the top almost looks like a one piece cap. I see your point though, but I like the fact there's a variety of tops out there for different tastes.
When you remove wood, you lose sustain, you dont gain any.
Its simple science.
That is why LEs pauls today suck. The originals weighed 13 pounds. Les pauls today only weight 7-8 pounds. They are not nearly as good as the old days. \\
Good reivew, but it would have been nice to hear it. Actually I have one of these and it truly is inspiring to play. I also have a vintage Strat. The funny thing is that these instruments demand to be played in different ways. The Strat is fun and familiar like and old pair of slippers. The Gibson LP is more formal, like going to dinner at a posh restaurant. Which is best? Depends what mood you are in and what you want to play.
So our older featherwieght tailpieces are now treasured for tone. With that thought, i have gone further from the additional weight of locking cast tuners. I have used conversion bushings and put original style kluson/tulip style tuners on my les pauls. I'll stick with my 73 and 75 deluxes.
Nice video, thanks for posting it. I have a 2005 desert burst les paul, I'm thinking of changing it for a 2008 model, for playability and weight relieving purposes. Mine has the burstbucker pickups. Is there a difference to the burstbucker pro pickups?
@heycase It actually is that some finishes are painted over multiple times, and after every layer that you paint you have to heat the guitar, so you can paint over it (sometimes 3x). That costs time and machinery operation.
To much hypocrocy. Why buy a light Les paul?? that's what made a Les paul a Les paul............don't drill Les pauls.. heavy wood, heavy tone. The Traditional rules!! You want a light Les paul?? I have two letters for you....SG........rock on!!
coz there crap thats why. I play an 07 gibson les paul, but have been playing for 10years +. i have tried most makes of strings, and gibson are one of the worst.
One thing that bothers me about the new ones is that they used chrome hardware instead of nickel-plate, which to me looks a lot more refined and stylish (and a lot more like the old ones). The chrome just looks cheap to me. And it seems like they only used the see-through back-plate to show off their new gold-plated pots. Gibson really needs to step up their quality-control. I have a friend who works at a music store, and he says that all the Gibsons arrive needing a setup (US or Chinese-made).
My friend, I thought you should know that after viewing your video review of the 2008 Les Paul Standard in August 2008, I got so excited that I ordered the guitar in an Iced Tea finish. It was subsequently built on August 10, 2008. Because I live in the UK, I didn't receive it until end October 2008. So, I've had the guitar just over 2 years now, and I am so thrilled with it! I often think about your review and should have thanked you at the time, but I've been too busy playing! Thanks!
One of the worst features of the new Standard is they are chambered. So for 2600 bucks street price Gibson will remove up to two and a half pounds of precious mahogany for you and make it sound like a semi hollow, killing the wonderful sustain they built their reputation on. Bought one. Returned it three days later. Was like a hollowed out shell of a true LP Standard. I'll stick with my '90 wide binding Standard. Ten and a half pounds of pure tone.
@GoldtopSam I totally agree. I ended up selling mine after about a month. Now I have an ESP Eclipse II on order from Japan. A little lighter than a LP but still completely solid. I may put some Gibson 57 Classics in it though.
@GoldtopSam Dude, you are the man!! I love my trad.Les paul. it' s heavy as lead. and they still drilled it a bit. I love vintage tone..............6 to 8 oz wood loss isn't to bad.
i got this guitar over the internet, serious shop, normally perfect products. But this guitar SUCKED the quality sucked, the sound sucked, the finish quality sucked... oh, and the fretboard had a hole in it!....gibson needs to rebuild its reputation to me...
@TheMarshallFan while gibson may have screwed up on the quality of the guitar you bought. you have to keep in mind you ordered it over the internet and the damage to the fretboard could have happened at some point after that company had the guitar in there warehouse.
smart move for next time, go to a store, buy a guitar that looks and feels right. dont buy it just cause it says gibson or any other company on it.
@TheMarshallFan Don't blame Gibson. It could have been the shipping company. You ordered it over the internet, you better be ready to accept the risks that goes with that
@Glockenator it wasnt just my personal experience. i went to a professional seller afterwards to get a proper one and he told me he wasnt ordering gibson anymore because the financial crisis hit them so bad that they are not able to use high quality material anymore. so the guitars suck at the moment, but i truly hope they will recover because i want a good gibson les paul so bad!
Good overview but I played one of them today and man was floored. First off the thing is so light didn't even feel like a LP. Then playing it just sounded horrible. Super thin and IMO sounded like an epiphone! Don't know what to think about Gibson quality and direction now. Kinda sad now that LP isn't around.
Asymmetrical necks have been around since Eddie Van Halen had those Music Man guitars built. There may have been some before but I'm no expert or anything.
@mattnara - yea, someone mention a company that made them but I was unfamiliar with them as quantity production runs. - I too (not being a wise guy - am no expert - or historian).
@Flailwielder the les paul tribute it is 800 bux and has locking tuners, locking straps, gib. 57 classic pickups and it has a c shaped name. Its great.
Do all LP post '08 are done with Plagued (plek lol)? Why did Gibson cut the color selection with the 50's/60's neck? I have an old Musiciansfriend catalog '07 and LP has a lot of colors (quilt etc...) and are $2-300 less than what there priced right now..
oh, and as far as what 575108 had to say, I think ANYONE who loves a Gibson looks good holding one! Excellent review !! There are many fine instruments out there, but for my money nothing beats a Gibson (even through what I consider the "dark years" of the 70's) I'm just happy that they (Gibson) had the wisdom to revert back to tradition (I think most Gibby fans EXPECT that), as well as look to the future ie. the robot series. Thanks for your time effort and the sharing of your knowledge.
My cousin Chris Stemmer (he lives in Lebanon Tn.) took me to the Gibson factory in Nashville. It was like walking on holy ground lol. ...and what a beautiful factory, everything about the place exuded a sense of quality, tradition, and pride of craftsmanship. I own a 2006 LP 1960 classic with the 496/500 pickup configuration and I'll never want for another guitar ...except a 1961 SG and an ES335, ...and a J 45 ...and a 1957,3 pickup LP Custom oh! and a 25/50 and a 59' standard...
@11harrison11 - They are a local company and I try to support them. Yes, like so many companies they seem to have had a period where they thought the name was all that mattered. I think the company has learned you have to keep working 24-7, 365 to hold on to your tradition. They had to loose some colors and really look inside and discover what they wanted to do.
I wholly agree. I have a 2008 Iced tea burst Les Paul Standard (premium top) and I have to encourage all guitar players to do what it takes to acquire one of these. There are few new inventions that will instantly improve your guitar playing, but this instrument is one of them. GET ONE!
Seriously. Take a pizza delivery job, take a cleaning job whatever it takes; Just get one!
@575108 "I am not trying to be racist or offencive but you just dont go with that guitar" - - Yea, I know what you mean, people like Dickey Betts, Jimmy Page, Mike McCready and even Wes Scantlin all look and play alike. There is definitely one kind of guy and sound for the LP. For my part, I'm just showing the features of the first major production redesign of an icon which happens to be made right up the road but known around the world. Gibson does make many variations.
@rldel149 blacks started the blues u do know that and they did start using les pauls!!! freddie king started so many like clapton beck and many others to use les paul so blacks started with the les paul!! so dont say the les paul is for this or that!!! dont talk bout things u dnt know!!
@rldel149 don't forget to mention Les Paul himself... that guy Les really shouldn't be playing a LP, he just doesn't look like a guitarist?!??? can someone pls post a picture of what a real guitarist looks like. LOL at that comment 575108, WTF. great review ridel149.
I don't know... I bought a Custom last year... It's amazing, but I'm in love with the honey burst standard too! I'd have the money at the end of the year... but I'm wondering if it'd be senseful xD..... damn GAS
is there any difference between a new 2008 or 2009 les paul standard compared to the old classics made in the 80s, 90s? people always say "oh, the 90s are much better" but what is betteR? i am planning to buy a 2nd handed gibson standard soon and am very confused
@thou well this apparently has a new neck profile, which i wasnt too happy on hearing, so it wont be the same as a 60s neck. i love those kind so i would buy a 90s one for sure
I just bought my LP Standard yesterday in the Light burst and it's amazing, perfect tone for the music i play rock & metal. It came down to this and the traditional both nice but i perfer the Std........
I've been a guitarist for over 30 years. In my collection I have 4 Les Paul's, a 1975 and 1980 LP Customs, and a 1980 LP Standards. One of the LP's is this 2008 model. I love this guitar. This guitar was built for road. This is the guitar that I take everywhere with me now. It is stage ready and It sounds great during my live performances.
Not with these (as my son calls them "sausage fingers"). I left my fiddle and guitar days behind me. I leave the playing to the boy. And he is coming along right nicely now.
please do a video like this for the traditional. you do such a great job, explaining, and being easy to understand. i love watching this video over and over again and i would love to be able to watch one about the traditional over and over again.
true! ive seen this video millions of times, i even bought the damn guitar!!! now im watching cause im not sure how to restring with the locking tuners
Gibson used to have a whole bunch of colors available in LP like wine red, transparent black, root beer, transpant amber etc... they stop making these colors?
got one of these yesterday 4 christmas. im 14 and this is my first gibson. best guitar ever. im so lucky 2 hav this guitar. i didnt kno how the lockin tuners work but i read 1 of ur comment replies 2 som1 and now i kno. mine is heritage cherry sunburst. awesome guitar thanks for the info
i must say to the butt hole below me Gibson didnt change any of the electronics just made it more comfortable to play and hold and they made the plates see through big deal! the only change i think should have not been made was the chambered body but it still has great sustain... and to the guy that made the vid thank you so much for you input i bought my 2008 Gibson Les Paul in iced tea and i am in love with it your review really pushed my decision.
I don't know there is a "quality" difference. There are differences in the features. You will need to play them both (use the same amp & at the same visit) to get a feel for the differences in tone & playability. You may find the Trad to be a bit fatter tone lacking some of the high-end of the 08 standard. It may be a tad heavier although not too much. I don't think it has locking tuners & the neck may be a bit thicker. Controls are soldered in place which may be sturdy but harder to replace.
I've never really been all that impressed by les pauls, and before you ask, I have played one, my uncle has had a standard ever since I was little, but they always felt too heavy and unbalanced to me,not to mention the price being a little crazy in my opinion, but I have to say these new ones look fantastic,I saw one in person and was just like "oooh" lol but I'll always be a strat guy, and that said, I'm waiting on my White/maple American standard arriving! :)
sweet vid mate you obviously know your stuff i always wanted to know why the strap joint thing was fatter at the top in pictures i've seen of this so cheers.
Nice video! I didn't know that much about it until I saw this video. But I will always perfer Fender Strats and Tele's! I have nothing against Gibson but nine out of ten times, they're made by an unskilled worker and made from low quality wood. But the othe time they're top notch!
This guitar is built for live performances. There is no need to change anything or add anything to this guitar. Everything you ever wanted in a Les Paul, this guitar has it. This guitar is built ready to ROCK!
They work just like regular pegs - except that you turn the thumbscrew on the backside and it pinches the string which is fed through the peg's hole. That way the string cannot creep and that way, you don't have to wrap a bunch of rounds to add friction between post/string enough to keep from creeping. One round is plenty. Restringing gets faster.
My dream of finally owning a Gibson Les Paul Standard has finally come true. I bought a 2005 Desert Burst yesterday. An absolutely stunning guitar! Looks and sounds amazing!
Nice review I'm just wondering how to use the neutrik jack on your guitar if you don't mind I would like to know how does it work how do you pull the plug when it's locked thank you very much in advance enjoy your guitar

The funny thing is that these instruments demand to be played in different ways. The Strat is fun and familiar like and old pair of slippers. The Gibson LP is more formal, like going to dinner at a posh restaurant. Which is best? Depends what mood you are in and what you want to play.

I have a friend who works at a music store, and he says that all the Gibsons arrive needing a setup (US or Chinese-made).

is there any difference between a new 2008 or 2009 les paul standard compared to the old classics made in the 80s, 90s? people always say "oh, the 90s are much better" but what is betteR? i am planning to buy a 2nd handed gibson standard soon and am very confused
thou 1 year ago
@thou well this apparently has a new neck profile, which i wasnt too happy on hearing, so it wont be the same as a 60s neck. i love those kind so i would buy a 90s one for sure
44eelz 1 year ago
@44eelz you are referring to the asymmetrical neck profile that these 08 has? cool. i plan to buy a traditional soon. a very fat 50s profile though

MannyBlue65 2 years ago
can you play it like you talk it
louisjolguin 2 years ago
Not with these (as my son calls them "sausage fingers"). I left my fiddle and guitar days behind me. I leave the playing to the boy. And he is coming along right nicely now.
rldel149 2 years ago
@rldel149 I have sausage fingers as well . Didn't stop me though

Gibson used to have a whole bunch of colors available in LP like wine red, transparent black, root beer, transpant amber etc... they stop making these colors?
Zhorellski 2 years ago
@Zhorellski no kidding. I wanted one in latte cream and they don't have it anymore. (I like weird finishes).

Nice Christmas, That guitar will last a lifetime if cared for. You can only have 1 first Gibson and the HC '08 Std is a sweet one to start with.

i must say to the butt hole below me Gibson didnt change any of the electronics just made it more comfortable to play and hold and they made the plates see through big deal! the only change i think should have not been made was the chambered body but it still has great sustain... and to the guy that made the vid thank you so much for you input i bought my 2008 Gibson Les Paul in iced tea and i am in love with it your review really pushed my decision.

sir, i have been saving 4h money for years and i have one question is there a quality difference in the traditional and the standerd
morg405 2 years ago
I don't know there is a "quality" difference. There are differences in the features. You will need to play them both (use the same amp & at the same visit) to get a feel for the differences in tone & playability. You may find the Trad to be a bit fatter tone lacking some of the high-end of the 08 standard. It may be a tad heavier although not too much. I don't think it has locking tuners & the neck may be a bit thicker. Controls are soldered in place which may be sturdy but harder to replace.
rldel149 2 years ago
how much was it?
HardRockOfficial 2 years ago
Man i fell in love with the guitar mostly by your description, youre an awesome salesman, the best intro-features video for a LPS 08.

Gibson USA is local to me and I do believe in the company.
Thank you.
rldel149 2 years ago
I've never really been all that impressed by les pauls, and before you ask, I have played one, my uncle has had a standard ever since I was little, but they always felt too heavy and unbalanced to me,not to mention the price being a little crazy in my opinion, but I have to say these new ones look fantastic,I saw one in person and was just like "oooh" lol but I'll always be a strat guy, and that said, I'm waiting on my White/maple American standard arriving! :)

Nice video! I didn't know that much about it until I saw this video. But I will always perfer Fender Strats and Tele's! I have nothing against Gibson but nine out of ten times, they're made by an unskilled worker and made from low quality wood. But the othe time they're top notch!
ILiveinMyroe 2 years ago
This guitar is built for live performances. There is no need to change anything or add anything to this guitar. Everything you ever wanted in a Les Paul, this guitar has it. This guitar is built ready to ROCK!

Heimdall1999 2 years ago
hey! how do the grover locking tuners work? are they just for fine tuning or do you put it in tune with the tuning keys and lock em in place?
patostrophic 2 years ago
They work just like regular pegs - except that you turn the thumbscrew on the backside and it pinches the string which is fed through the peg's hole. That way the string cannot creep and that way, you don't have to wrap a bunch of rounds to add friction between post/string enough to keep from creeping. One round is plenty. Restringing gets faster.
rldel149 2 years ago
oh! k cool thanks man! great video by the way. i bought the same dessert burst right after watcing this. you know your shit
patostrophic 2 years ago
those weight reducing holes are for pussies who can't handle weight... and for sustain I'd go for a long neck tenon les paul...
pretty much useless features
ironrzk 2 years ago
Actually? Some of the guitars with the "weight reducing holes" are actually quite heavy.
