Reply to BPch1...American Airlines, Braniff, Mohawk for certain flew BAC 1-11s out of LGA while I lived nearby. This was 1962 to 1972, when many of the best fuel to noise & black smoke converters were flying. Concorde is in it's own unique category. I've heard them at JFK and can say there is nothing like it. The BAC 1-11 sure didn't look as cool. I enjoyed that period in aviation. Big prop planes, like the Constellation had a deep majestic sound.
That was some awesome footage right there, short it may seem.. but you couldnt pull that off with any plane, which shows how unique and special Concord was..
@Johntpartee Personally I think it has its merits. Looking forward to the 787 first flight over - and the 747-8 and the A350 and the CSeries (???) - limitless entertainment!!
@Maguirerichardson EPIC house my friend . if youre into peace and quiet, maybe not so much. but if you like aircraft ( like i do) then this is the spot
It was the only aircraft that, when it flew overhead, everybody, no matter who they were, no matter what they were doing, stopped and just................looked at it.
Wow that's incredible. Such a good view of it, it's flying so low to your house. I imagine the noise must have been really annoying. Did you see them as a pest or were you in awe of them? Seeing this you think it would be cool to witness, but then it would probably be a pain to live with.
Living in London, I remember when, as a little boy, I'd be there, without fail, every summer night as the 9pm service took off from Heathrow, and how my old school's sports field was underneath the flight path on its last ever flight, and I was watching as the last one ever landed.
@brightlights456X concorde .... dude you can't compare a military air plane with the concorde.. is like comparing a mmo game with an xbox game ugh... Concorde is the best commercial plane.
Thankyou so much for posting this, i remember going to heathrow about to board a 747 or similar to orlando and my dad pointing out concorde that was sat on the tarmac outside the terminal obv waiting to embark on her next flight, i must have been around the same age as your son in this vid and didnt really appreciate as much as i now wish i had. have been to visit her at filton etc since she retired but how lucky you were to see and hear her fly so close, RIP SST. Thanks made me smile watching.
I remember back in the early 70's when concorde was being tested at RAF Fairford, we could hear the sound of her 8 miles away. She will be sadly missed.
this is truly magical and brings back may childhood memories, thank you for this it means alot and the fact that she set off the car alarms makes it even better cheers
Some people call that noise pollution, I'd call it music. I only ever saw Concorde twice, both by pure chance at Manchester and it's something I'll never forget. A few weeks ago I went to the Brooklands Museum to initially see their Viscount & Vanguard. But they have just finished G-BBDG (The first prototype) and I was totally amazed at just how HUGE she is! The cabin/flight deck are small but the overall aircraft is amazing!!
If you've not been yet I highly recomend it, she's beautiful.
Judging from the video, that neighborhood is just a few blocks away from Heathrow, if I'm not mistaken..
Did you live in that same neighborhood when the BAC 1-11s and VC10s were still in commercial service??
Those planes were among the noisiest, probably more deafening than the Concorde taking off, and they didn't climb as fast as the Concorde. It should be interesting to know how the people living in your neighborhood coped with the BAC 1-11 and VC10 noise when they were still flying.
@shikat2371 We've been here 17 years - not sure what was flying, but I know that you are correct in that some of the smaller earlier aircraft were horrendously noisy. It has definitely improved though over the years - the jumbos are still the worst (particularly the early ones still flying) - but you had to cover your ears with Concorde if you had any sense....I think I had some ear protection when I filmed this......so Concorde was the worst in my experience.
@shikat2371 I remember BAC 1-11's passing overhead on takeoff. I was a few miles from LGA. It had a strange hollow sound as it approached then after passing it changed to something akin to the space shuttle... the sound big solid rocket motors make, a snapping crackling roar.
i think usair was the only major u.s. carrier to use bac 1-11's, so LGA makes sense. i'm guessing this was 80's into early 90's? horribly fuel-inefficient plane. the crackling sound might be related to the excessive burning of a surge of fuel lost on the takeoff.
the four-engined, british aerospace-146 was far more successful with u.s. carriers on regional hops.
Every day back in Year 3 I use to run to the window at around 11am just after the end of break, people would always ask me why.. this is the reason! She came over most days. How I miss those days! It's weird to think then I was still dreaming of becoming a Pilot but now I'm starting my Training... The Concorde will always be apart of my Childhood!
@HeathrowSpottingHD - I hope that the training goes well - just clicked on your profile name and watched some of your high quality YouTube videos - excellent body of work - keep it up!
@HeathrowSpottingHD Remind me of being in my English class a few years back whilst still in Lossiemouth, I couldn't pay any attention to the teacher because I was watching a Typhoon practice it's display out the window! Needless to say I failed that class... It was a common occurrence!
so sad they're gone. that plane is a masterpiece, an icon of an era and a proof of what the man is capable of. so long concorde.. u'll always be in our hearts.
@JackCAFC yes I do.. And it would be more correct if you had said.. Make love to her! It's not a plane... It's Concorde ! It's one of the greatest things ever to grace the skies and yes, I have fond memories of her and wish I could see her spread her wings one last time
@screwtheusername Absolutely right - I had so many opportunties thinking back - but I used to like watching it - and you don't think these things will end, so I am pleased to have filmed it once........hindsight, sigh!
I will always remember the faint sonic boom heard along the north cornwall bays where i occasionally took weekend breaks (Treyarnon). The bird obviously hit the throttles when beyond the coastline US bound.
that was wonderful have been on her 3 times and you see just a some houses and windsor castle, clouds ur gone, amazing and ultra fast asent up..OMG...Miss Concorde...Very Well done ! !
Anyone who thinks Concorde was loud never experienced the old Tridents...O.K Concorde was loud...but it was loud for a short time. The noise from Tridents would linger...then another would take off...and another. All you got was constant noise from the buggers. The consolation was that you'd get the odd Viscount, Vanguard, Argosy, Brittannia etc in between...Happy days :))
@Butchuk2007 - Definitely going back a little bit more now - my first flight was on a Viscount to Jersey when I was 6.....but I know what you mean about those Tridents...very unpleasant for such a relatively small plane.....
That is awesome footage at low level complete with afterburner glow. Also very good sound. I lived in South Croydon, London from 92 to 96 and although the Concord was still quite high in the sky when it went over the sound was unbelievable. I would often have difficulty initially locating the plane in the sky as the sound was coming from all directions. Literally the sky was filled with the roar from the 4 AFTERBURNING TURBOJET engines.
Concorde you to take off 3 miles from my house near Heathrow with those afterburners on and the whole house used to shake. I spent years growing up as a kid watching it fly so low overhead. At school time we used to rush from our desks to see it go over. Have a tear in my eye seeing this vid, such a sad day when they took it out of service. :-(
Noise and after burners just like a military jet. The only thing that equalled the loudness was the Trident and the noise from them lingered, probably because they were that much slower. Then another one would take off and another one etc...Constant loud noise. Concorde was quick and it took the noise with it.
That A380 is very quiet. The little MD-80s make much more noise.
My thoughts. Couldn't handle the continual noise. Our daughter lives in Eton and its bad enough there for me. One week no sleep due to the noise and they must live several miles from the take off. Must say that planes are greta to watch as they fly over but only during the day if your not on nights
@transonicbuoy1 Thanks - not sure they will thank me if they run into hearing difficulties though.
Recommend Brooklands Museum near Weybridge as a top visit for Concorde fans - combine with a trip to Mercedes-Benz World next door and - if required - stay at the Brooklands Hotel. Brilliant....
@harley55100 Good question - I wasn't here then - but I think they were horrendous - slow and very unpleasant - the difference with Concorde was just the speed and sheer noise. I was asleep on the top deck of a bus on the way into Hounslow and thought the world was about to end.........but the noise from the others was presumbly horrible because they were the frequent flyers of the day. We bought our house from a family who had been here for (50) years - they thought it was improving - just....
I used to sit at hatton cross and watch this beautiful bird take off. Many evenings I'd delay my drive home just to feel the power and the noise of this wonderful plane. The sonic chorus of the car alarms in the car park was always amusing to me as I watched her climb and turn right on her way to JFK. I miss you so much my beautiful White swan and I wish one day to see you fly again
@VNVgirl I do love the A380 - you should see that close - absolutey stunning - 50ft wider wingspan than a jumbo - and massive......not quite Concord but I look at every one that I can see in a similar WoW way...
@Maguirerichardson I agree it is amazing that it ever gets off the ground but the 747-8 looks a heap better with its raked winglets, jagged engine cowlings and the awesome shape of the fuselage
The young lad in that video taken back in 2003 is lucky. He got to see it alive, feel the vibration and noise and see for himself why Concorde captured the imagination. How sad to think that for children his age today Concorde is nothing more than a lifeless museum exhibit .
I love concorde so much now but you're lucky that only happened once in a while. I lived under the flight path of Prestwick where Concorde did flight training and it would fly touch and go's for hours. We had to listen to that noise about once every twenty minutes for ages. It's a wonderful memory now to remember watching that as a kid but at the time it sucked. So many people complained that they moved the training base to Shannon. Shame, really.
To people who wonder if it really was that loud - you have no idea. Once when I drove past Heathrow just as Concorde took off, under the flight path it sounded as though the space shuttle with all its boosters still attached was reversing vertically and about to land on top of us. All the traffic on the roundabout stopped dead and all the drivers ducked down in their cars until it had gone past, about 20 seconds later. Everything shook. But did I mind? No, because it was Concorde.

I wonder what it's like living that close to Heathrow when the VC10s and BAC 1-11s were still in commercial service?
Those planes were extremely deafening during takeoff that they could wake up the dead for miles around, figuratively speaking.
harley55100 1 year ago

@merlimax The Green Man pub was (and presumably still is??) a great pub near Hatton to plane spot. Anyone reading who saw the 777 short landing??!

VNVgirl 1 year ago
@VNVgirl I do love the A380 - you should see that close - absolutey stunning - 50ft wider wingspan than a jumbo - and massive......not quite Concord but I look at every one that I can see in a similar WoW way...
Maguirerichardson 11 months ago

I wish I lived there but Heathrow is such a busy airport even at night.
airportfreak747 1 year ago
To people who wonder if it really was that loud - you have no idea. Once when I drove past Heathrow just as Concorde took off, under the flight path it sounded as though the space shuttle with all its boosters still attached was reversing vertically and about to land on top of us. All the traffic on the roundabout stopped dead and all the drivers ducked down in their cars until it had gone past, about 20 seconds later. Everything shook. But did I mind? No, because it was Concorde.
