Gi Joe was ACTION FORCE in the UK Since the 1970s GI joe agents started to make guest apperances in the comics helping Action force stop Baron ironblood who later turned himself into Cobra commander and formed cobra
@Sturmdude It was the same voice but when they said Yo Joe or some name they dumb it (the best they can) to say ACTION FORCE or the name of caracters that was different (not all of them)
@Sturmdude They only dubbed it over whenever anyone says 'G.I. Joe' or says a swear in voices that tryto imitate the American voices, but very poorily, the rest of the time it's the same voices.
So Action Force had already been a pre-established series of toys? I wasn't aware of that. I had always assumed that the "Action Force" title for the UK GI Joe had been because "G.I." had been a purely American World War II term and Brits couldn't relate to the a group called GI Joe - and the title "Tommy Joe" would've sounded too silly
@DarkWizard83 also remember that at the time palitoy were forbidden by hasbro to sell action force in the us as hasbro didnt want action force to be a rival to gi joe on the store shelves.
I grew up with Action Force figures but the cartoon was never shown on UK TV so I watched GI Joe cartoon on the old sattellite channel called Super Chanel in 1987 /88
Why was there never a broadcast of action force on tv? We could only see the Action Force cartoon on VHS
It all comes down to marketing in the end. Having heard both I think I prefer this one. I know what people mean by the dubbing you think they would have made an effort
I do prefer the Action Force intro, it's a shame that whenever Cobra Commander has to say Action Force, his entire speech is horribly dubbed. and I mean HORRIBLY
That's one positive thing you can say about the theme song, but wait till the dubbing starts. In fact there's another video on YouTube, search for Action Force G I Joe dub and you'll see what we had to deal with here in the Uk and Ireland.
also the actionforce name gos kinda back to the 60s with the action man toy line up which was our line of gijoes produced under license by palitoy, the original action force line had no gi joes in it and were recreations of classic millitary units, dessert rats us gis royal marines etc
can i say that some lines were re dubbed every time someone mentioned action force, they were horrible and didnt match the real voices especially when someone mentioned sgt slammer, who youd know as slaughter, i think the toy was called slaughter tho
Well, I grew up with Action Force so it's natural I think that's the better one, but even so.. play the G.I. Joe theme and the Action Force theme.. it's obvious which is better and suits the show more. Also; why has Britain ripped this off again? Strange as it may sound, we're not Communist China. It would have been a fully authorised translation/conversion. Would you be bitching at Germans next for translating Star Trek?
@invisionuk Hasbro europe changed the name as we don't have G.I.'s in Europe. That's why the original G.I. Joe became Palitoy's Action Man. The International Heroes part was to make them less patrioctic to America for our version as we're in Europe, though Hasbro wasen'gt trying to be fully anti-American at all. In the end this version of G.I. Joe was only released on video by Tempo/M.S.D. Video.
@conradojavier Remember I said that Palitoy released the early G.I. Joe dolls as Action Man, Action Force was a continuiation of these toys!, even when Hasbro re-aquired the European didstribution license for their own toys from Palitoy.
i love how every1 is talkin like the british ripped this off, but how many british shows have a version with "American" in front of them these days? America even changes REAL events to make themselves look better now and then, U571 anybody? I'm not being a dick but some ppl need to get off there high horse it's just a cartoon
I love the fact that the voice over towards the end sounds exactly the same as the sorts of voice overs you get in real world weapon systems promotional videos you see at defence fairs and stuff.
some were. In certain episodes, like Sink the Montana, Destro says several lines in a deeper, more robotic voice and Hawk has a different voice when he says that "action force will stop you!". Its not fully redubbed, just parts where they change GI Joe to Action Force and yes, parts where YO JOE! is altered to FULL FORCE!
Why is this funny? Because it said Action Force? Do you know why? Because their were already toys, comics of Action Force not relate to G.I.Joe. But in 1985 Palitoy ceded control of the European market to Hasbro following the death of the Palitoy's owners and the winding-up of operations at their factory. Hasbro purchased the Palitoy factory, copyrights and moulds and began to packaging G.I. Joe figures under the Action Force brand since people already know that brand and it was very popular.
You know the sad thing, if this was out 20 years in the future ahead of its time. It would be condemned to hell with all the wrong messages for todays kids.
A lot of the shows of the 80's consulted with pediatric councelors to instill moral codes and themes into shows. Its why they are vastly superior to the crap they produce today because they have depth compared to the junk on the screens today.
The only thing in common with the kids shows of today is that they are made to peddle toys! But at least the cartoons of the 80's sent a positive message to its viewers about right and wrong!
This isn't the last time they changed the name of a kid's show in another country. In Canada, ironically the country of its origin, Beast Wars was called Beasties because they were too cowardly to expose kids to the word "wars".
i remember watching both of my brothers videos one was action force one was GI joe but i always clled the show action force and the toys GI joes also i love how they cut out anything american eash that is the most europian thing i have ever seen
I am so glad I had the american channels when I was growing up. The only time I ever heard GI Joe called Action Force was with the toys and when I bought the movie back in the day when VHS was the shit.
Its like Ninja Turtles here in the UK we all knew they were really called Ninja as many of us had imported American toys, plus the film was called Ninja. In B & M a discount shop here in England I would get imported GI Joe and Ninja Turtles figures. They were the same and cheaper too.
I remember in the cartoons when they used to dub the parts where they said "GO JOE!" with "FULL FORCE!", and it was always awful. I'm sure it wasn't a British decision, as we are such lap dogs. Perhaps the Belgians would have protested(Toute la Force d'Action!/Volle actiemacht!)...
Not too many people were fooled by the name change. The G.I.Joe cartoon was on cable TV in the U.K, and kids buying Action Force toys were still going around the place shouting "Yo Joe"
After Hasbro changed Action Force to G.I.Joe in 1990, it was STILL called Action Force in some countries, Germany and Sweden i think.
Action force is a a highly trained anti-terror force. Hmmmmmmm, sounds like it could have been written in 2001. Weird how these shows are so resonant these days??!!
Yet Hasbro had no problem with using the word when the UK was at war with the IRA, which was raging at the time main production.. Oh well, irony for you.
Thats because its Hasbro is an American company and since it was not affecting its core audience they didn't bother. When you are a kid you simplify these conficts, I remember making my action force men fight the IRA. I suspect that if the word was there today todays kids would be fighting Islamic terrorists instead.
You raise some good points. The ORIGINAL Palitoy "Action Force" (see below)...
uk(DOT)youtube(DOT)com/watch?v=QIaE8bzjXrQ
... was nothing to do Hasbro's "GI Joe". It was only after the American company bougt the British one that the two were merged. It was Hasbro (Americans) who changed the "GI Joe" name to "Action Force", NOT the British.
I like "GI Joe", I'm glad that Devil's Due have included "Action Force" characters in their "GI Joe" comic.

None of the Brits I know give a **** about something that happened hundreds of years ago. Besides, their ancestors were as much victims of the aristocracy as anyone else.
I love cartoons, but I also read history!
Anyway, here's looking forward to the new GI JOE movie!
"The Brits" did NOT change the name, HASBRO did because they wanted to sell GI JOE toys to ACTION FORCE fans in Britain and Europe. (Hasbro bought the rights to ACTION FORCE after Palitoy's owner sadly died. Rather than go into competition against themselves they just repackaged GI JOE toys in ACTION FORCE packets).
It was not a British decision, it was an American one. Purely business.
Calling ALL ACTION FORCE FANS ! Gi joe was only re-named in the UK in many other EU countrys (like Belgium and the Netherlands) this show was known as ''Gi joe real American hero'' ( and still is!) of course in the 80-90s American shows where really populair in many EU countrys (and why not its not called ''the golden age'' for nothing!)
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
That's what's puzzling. Belgium has no problem with the name. But then again the Brits still have that huge chip on their shoulder because we told them to "get the fudge out!" about two hundred and thirty years ago.
OK Hasbro renamed G.I. Joe; Action Force for the European market to make it sound less American, hence also they use the term 'International Heroes' instead of 'A Real American Hero'.
In the UK English version they also dub over someone saying G.I. Joe and use Action Force. They would also dub over any bad language. Of course the British voices did use American Accents, though they sounded nothing like their US counterparts most of the time, though Cobra Commander's dub voice wasen't too bad, nor was Shipwreck's. LOL
Whatever any of you wants to say, It's always going to have been GI Joe, GI Joe had it's place in american pop culture way before the show, and action force was just a way for hasbro to cash in on the show
When I was a kid I always thought of Flint and lady Jane as british. Being in the UK I didn't see the cartoon until I was much older. Anyway we had an older version of Action Force before they started using the US figure molds. the Bad Guys were called the Red Skulls.
I'd say that our UK version is much better!!! It makes more sense to me that an elite worldwide organisation would be comprised of specialists from various countries around the world, pooling their finest troops to form a 'global' team.
Yes there is in comic form but not cartoon form. Imagine the comics are like somthing like Buffy and Angel. They exist in the same world and crossover now and then but have different plots and stories (transformers also existed in the GI Joe/Action Force Universe and often joined in the crossover fun). As for the cartoon though, I'm sad to say that the Action Force cartoon was simply the GI Joe cartoon with "Full Force" dubbed over when the characters said "Yo Joe"!
probably being totally stupid but having been born in 1990 i didnt get to see any of this first hand. also being Scottish, ive only watched some of my older Cousins ACTION FORCE videos. is there a difference between the two despite the intro sequence and the whole International Force and US Force etc
I gotta say, and I read both action force and G.I. Joe, the Action force stories were superior (apart from the G.I. Joe transformers generation 2 crossover... which just plain rocked!!!!)
But at the third generation (1985) Eventually, in 1985 Palitoy had ceded control of the European market to Hasbro and began to package G.I. Joe figures under the Action Force brand. This move marked the end of the sub-grouping of the Action Force team and a new unified Action Force (or AF) also faced a new enemy in the name of Cobra.
Action Force fans are gathering at blood for the baron . com site, if you liked the old BAF comics youll love the site. thanks for posting this video it was super fun to watch
Ok let me explain why its Called Action Force. First theirs G.I.Joe comic book in the U.S. and Action Force in UK (two different comic book). The toy in the first generation (1982) was made by Palitoy Limited and have nothing to do with the G.I.Joe like: Brithish Commando, Commander, Deep Sea Diver etc.
Yep - I think you are on the money on that one - they were more like red stormtroopers - didn't really have individual personalities... unlike the GI Joe villains
It was called G.I.JOE for a good reason you know... G.I.JOE was a comic strip that was created for the United States Military magazines during World War II. The comics became so popular over the years that action figures were made in the 60's by Hasbro and continued into the 70's. In the 80's, smaller action figures were released at the same time as the popular cartoon. So it's G.I.JOE.. not Action Force
No I got it.Who do you think can save the world GI Joe or Bananaman?HAHAHAHA!British people better than Americans. You aren't better than New Zealanders how the hell you gonna be better than Americans. Thanks for the laff.
I have two episodes of this on VHS I've had that for a long time. If I can convert it I'd try to upload it on here. Shipwreck was my favorite. The episodes are when Shipwreck tells a story to the Orphans and one about a Magov'n Device??
You know, it's actually a better theme than the American one.

I used to remember watching Action Force as a kid and then being confused when the toys were called G.I. Joe. This vid brought back memories!
mjscarface 4 years ago
The intro music to Action Force is actually much better than G.I. Joe. It feels and sounds a lot more heroic.
AcidNeo 4 years ago
are you high? G.I.Joe is much better and more heroic
Thunar55 4 years ago
No way, Action Force is ten times better.
And you smell.
char1 4 years ago
don't you mean that Action Force is ten times worse, I may smell but I have better teeth.
Thunar55 4 years ago
If there was ever anything worth re-releasing on dvd it would be action force, and maybe ren and stimpy.

When I was a kid I always thought of Flint and lady Jane as british. Being in the UK I didn't see the cartoon until I was much older. Anyway we had an older version of Action Force before they started using the US figure molds. the Bad Guys were called the Red Skulls.
ipodrob 4 years ago
I'd say that our UK version is much better!!! It makes more sense to me that an elite worldwide organisation would be comprised of specialists from various countries around the world, pooling their finest troops to form a 'global' team.
lukasx123 4 years ago
No way the American version is better.
Thunar55 4 years ago
The American one sounds like a corny 50's themetune.
The UK one is much better; more rousing and a damn sight cooler.
meekedw 4 years ago 2
Corny yea right and the uk don't whatever, The American one roles of the tongue alot better than the UK one.
Thunar55 4 years ago
English, Mother-f**ker do you speak it?
meekedw 4 years ago 2
your point?
Thunar55 4 years ago
Just joshing. I don't see how the US version rolls off the tongue better by the way. Both seem easy enough to sing along to if that's your bag.
meekedw 4 years ago
I agree competely this is far better
FleetlordAvatar120 4 years ago
our version is much beta then the bloody yanks!
much cooler! right?

Yes there is in comic form but not cartoon form. Imagine the comics are like somthing like Buffy and Angel. They exist in the same world and crossover now and then but have different plots and stories (transformers also existed in the GI Joe/Action Force Universe and often joined in the crossover fun). As for the cartoon though, I'm sad to say that the Action Force cartoon was simply the GI Joe cartoon with "Full Force" dubbed over when the characters said "Yo Joe"!
Beastwolverineman 4 years ago
probably being totally stupid but having been born in 1990 i didnt get to see any of this first hand. also being Scottish, ive only watched some of my older Cousins ACTION FORCE videos. is there a difference between the two despite the intro sequence and the whole International Force and US Force etc
jonny2390 4 years ago
I gotta say, and I read both action force and G.I. Joe, the Action force stories were superior (apart from the G.I. Joe transformers generation 2 crossover... which just plain rocked!!!!)
Beastwolverineman 4 years ago

But at the third generation (1985) Eventually, in 1985 Palitoy had ceded control of the European market to Hasbro and began to package G.I. Joe figures under the Action Force brand. This move marked the end of the sub-grouping of the Action Force team and a new unified Action Force (or AF) also faced a new enemy in the name of Cobra.

Action Force fans are gathering at blood for the baron . com site, if you liked the old BAF comics youll love the site. thanks for posting this video it was super fun to watch
jamarmiller 4 years ago
Ok let me explain why its Called Action Force. First theirs G.I.Joe comic book in the U.S. and Action Force in UK (two different comic book). The toy in the first generation (1982) was made by Palitoy Limited and have nothing to do with the G.I.Joe like: Brithish Commando, Commander, Deep Sea Diver etc.
nords 4 years ago
In the uk and the rest of europe where cobra not (at first) the red shadows. With Baron Iron Blood instesd of cobra commander?
badhead 2 years ago
Yep - I think you are on the money on that one - they were more like red stormtroopers - didn't really have individual personalities... unlike the GI Joe villains

I cannot begin to tell you how gay that sounds sounds! Its G.I Joe for crying out Loud!

Man, do I detect jealousy from a yank here. ACTION FORCE!
mike976uk 5 years ago
It was called G.I.JOE for a good reason you know... G.I.JOE was a comic strip that was created for the United States Military magazines during World War II. The comics became so popular over the years that action figures were made in the 60's by Hasbro and continued into the 70's. In the 80's, smaller action figures were released at the same time as the popular cartoon. So it's G.I.JOE.. not Action Force
carolitocool 5 years ago 2
your only jealous cos the yank version is corny as fuk. just like everything else u americans do.
SIMENEWT 5 years ago
for once carlito cool we've taken summat you've made and renamed it. Hurt's doesn't it. ACTION FORCE
SIMENEWT 5 years ago
The video quite clearly states "Action Force". So it's "Action Force" and not "Gay Infantryman Joe" or whatever it's called in Americaland.
toby14483 4 years ago

I have two episodes of this on VHS I've had that for a long time. If I can convert it I'd try to upload it on here. Shipwreck was my favorite. The episodes are when Shipwreck tells a story to the Orphans and one about a Magov'n Device??
