  • I remember this... I am thankful that I was not impacted directly as I live in St. Louis, but I was able to watch some of the coverage on the Cape Girardeau TV Station... although our airport was hit on Good Friday this year too...

  • I remember this, I was only 8 and my sister was a month old, we lived in 2nd story apartment so while the sirens were going off we had to rush to our grandparents house a few minutes away

  • Thanks Technology! a great way to be prepared in calamity like this!

  • Dave Brown needs to get an award for his excellent meteorologist skills

  • Dave Brown's a beast.

  • i remember that whole day it was scareiest strom i ever been thru!!!!!!!!! thank god we still alive i use to live in the autum ridge apartments rite next to da hickory ridge mall

  • i was living in memphis then but nw i live in phoenix... we had to have the roof, back windows, and one of the garage doors replaced when the storm hit and dropped our oakon the garage

  • I live in Western Pennsylvania. Tornadoes don't happen here.

  • By far the best weatherman around, Dave Brown. Very professional and descriptive. Tornado emergencies are issued when ANY tornado is immenently occurring in a heavily populated town or city.

  • I heard it say "Al corn county, Bitten County, Tepig County (LOL)"

  • Why was there a tornado emergency if it was only EF2? Was it because Memphis is populated?

  • @itsmysignaturethang

    It was a large tornado

  • @itsmysignaturethang

It was a large tornado that was threatening a very large and populated city (Memphis)

  • @itsmysignaturethang cuz there was a tornado forming in memphis it still can be a emergency even if it was a ef0

  • What a ad for "viper" i dont like that

  • its heading for jackson maybe that was the one that hit union university ohhhh snappppz

  • The Sirens sound like Whelen 4004's running in alert. Or am I wrong.

  • i remember this it hit my city but didn't come near my house.

  • The weather coverage is the only reason to watch Channel 5

  • LOL ALWAYS A WANT TO BE WEATHERMAN!! looks like a hook but not sure....? REALLY? i mean i think the weatherman on the TV HAS A HANDLE ON IT U AZZ!! SHUT THE FUC UP TERD

  • @ilovehyper Severe hook. I live in Southaven (in the hook), and I also want to be a meteorologist. Turned out to be an EF-3 tornado...missed my house, luckily.

  • A Tornado Emergency is issued when a tornado is moving in towards densely populated areas. He probably hasn't heard of that since that term was first used in 1999, so it's relatively new to meteorology.

  • A Tornado Emergency is issues when a tornado is moving in towards densely populated areas. He probably hasn't heard of that since that term was first used in 1999, so it's relatively new to meteorology.

  • @JMcgo1979 In exceedingly rare situations, when a severe threat to human life and catastrophic damage from a tornado is imminent or ongoing, the forecaster may use the terminology "TORNADO EMERGENCY FOR [GEOGRAPHIC AREA]" in the third bullet of the warning. Additionally, in such a situation, this terminology should only be used when reliable sources confirm a tornado, or there is clear radar evidence of the existence of a damaging tornado such as the observation of debris." i work at wfo Nashvil

  • At 2:47, he hears tornado emergency and grabs that paper like a super ninja!

  • @shongaloosmarts : I think that terminology surprised him as it did me. I had studied about a Tornado Emergency in meteorology class and when you hear of one of those issued it means business!

  • @DWood429 Latest statistics actually show that the usage of "Tornado Emergency" has nearly a 50% false alarm rate...

  • @shongaloosmarts he does he grabs that paper like a lighting bolt

  • the old school weather forecasting veterans are always the best imo i hope i become one

  • I have been watching Dave Brown since the 1970's. Although I moved away from Memphis back in 1987, I continue to keep up with the Memphis weather. Thanks Dave!

  • 1:41 see how that looks like a backwards J? if a tornado formed thats where it would because that shows rotation in the storm

  • 4:40am Monday (CDT) - Time in Memphis, Tennessee

  • @GelandnaleG u mean PM? i was out of town in the same time zone calling my mom and it wasn't in the early morning hours

  • i LOVE DAVE BROWN!!! dave brown FTFW

  • Hi! I am blind. I had a chance to sit in a station with the vipir radar from Baron. I love what he's got. I like that station. WSB along with fox station WAGA has that. I know Glen Burnes and Ken Cook. How ever, Glen is the bestin the Atlanta erea because he chaced tornados. You have good weather men out there. If your station doesn't have the vipir, You suck. Please request me.

  • haha tornado sirens over the news. it is not very hard to hear them.

  • Whoa!!!!!!!!

  • nice pendant echo

  • @iluvamedic pendant echo? like a bow echo?

  • naw actually its like a hook but is MORE pronounced...atleast thats what this weather spotting page said if i am wrong please forgive me if i mixed it up

  • the weather pattern to me even looks kinda like a tornado.

  • @cobrall009 weather pattern? Possibly you men the radar signature looks like it could produce a tornado.

Posting this from Shelby County,Indiana! (Shelbyville)

  • @SSArt98 no i mean the pattern itself looks like a tornado xD sorry i make thing hard to understand .x.

  • yea dave brown! action news five ftw!

  • can you hear the siren in the background?

  • @thejazzyb123 not yet.

  • I can't believe I'm scared watching this now and it happened two years ago!

  • Dang i remember that night....i was freaking out.... today we had about 3 tornadoes in shelby county but they wernt as bad as this one!

  • amazing coverage and great system! And the reports of what being hit? very nice! i'm still shocked about a tornado emerency! wow!

  • HA! you can hear the sirens! That's so cool!

  • 2 years ago today, hard to believe.

  • Ain't that the truth. I'm in Jackson and can't believe it has been 2 yrs.

  • Just kiddin ya , hope everythings going well Dave , seen banana nose lately, or Tojo or Jimmy or Jerry or bill Dundee , they say you get shorter w/ age, he's probably 79 by now. • I'll never Forget when Dave got knocked down on air for giving wrong weather, I think they predicted no rain, well ,, it rained

  • Comment removed

  • 2nd tornado ive been hit buy i lived in greens burg and moved to memphis bad luck for me

  • Not only one of the best meteorologists in the history of broadcast meteorology, but one of the best wrestling broadcasters to boot. (You haven't lived until you see him call a wrestling match, and then stop in the midst of it to give a tornado warning.)

  • i can hear a t-128 siren in the background

  • and a tbolt

  • i stand corrected, it sounds like a p-10/p-15 siren

  • Great job conveying how serious this situation was and with delivering the tornado emergency.

  • GO DAVE!!

  • That hairpiece is legendary. Meteorology skills...not so much.

  • i remeber that tornado my dad usally comes home at 6:00 pm but he didnt come home till 8:00 because of the storm i was so scared

  • my grampa, was in this i bet

  • dave brown is a wonderfull weather man!

channel 5 is all i watch

  • @stephothehippie1 me too! God bless Dave Brown! He's my rock during severe weather. He was so nervous on this night. You KNEW how serious it was based on his reactions.

  • @stephothehippie1 - his on-air; as its actually happening is decent; too bad his forecast are so poor (the stuff that really counts; the predictions) channel 3 is the award winner for forecasts! That's your best bet. ANYONE can tell you what is going on at the moment it is happening!

  • that was so crazy we stay riht down the street from the hickory ridge we were so terrified. when we heard the sirens

  • By the way, WMC-TV upgraded to HD back in July of last year. Their radar and weather graphics are beautiful.

And to the naysayers, the BTI/VTI of the cell with the EF2 tornado that hit southeastern Memphis July 30th, 2009 had a VTI that hovered around 7-8.

  • Here in CT, we have had a couple of tornado warnings in some very bad thunderstorms. I have seen those rotating circles on radars on WFSB-3 in Hartford; but i have not heard of that BTI system.

And yes I can hear those sirens on the WMC-TV 'cast. You guys in Memphis and other parts of tornado alley can teach us in CT about twisters.

  • BTI is more then likely just a way to describe the shear of the storms and other things that produce tornados. Also may indicate TVS or ETVS and Mesocyclones. BTI is a way to explain all that to the general public

  • You know, the other day I tuned in to some severe weather coverage on Fox 5 in NYC. As part of their Sky Guardian system, the BTI index came up. It was at 5.7 for a twister to hit Sussex County, NJ.

Now here in my neck of the woods in CT, it was just rain, thunder, nothing extreme.

  • Hi Patriot :) I work at a small radio station in Connecticut, but I'm originally from Tennessee. Sometimes I don't think they handle the warnings properly here, but it's due to inexperience. People here are more fearful of storms than we are it seems.

  • The only thing you need to know is that they are terrifying and exciting at the same time. :P I remember this night. I was at school having a dress rehearsal for a show and we were all huddled in a classroom taking cover. A tornado ended up touching down just north of us and destroying a construction plant in our county.

  • You can even hear the tornado sirens. Cool.

  • @AlanRocks23 :The reason you can hear the tornado sirens blaring in the background is Channel 5 is located at 1960 Union Avenue in Memphis, Tennessee. There is a police precinct right across the street and it has the siren in the back lot.

  • 1:45 Thats about where the tornado touched down at Airways and Stateline. I watched this tornado from my front yard as it tore up those warehouses. Scary as hell!

  • cool i wish i was there

  • yea, at the time i lived in greenbrook subdivision. we ran down the hall and dove in the bathroom. the power then flickered out...FREAKY

  • You probably should have been taking cover but you didn't get hit. But did you get damage at your house from launched debris?

  • Right after I saw the tornado drop down and start throwing up debris we ran inside for cover. But once I was in the house I looked out the window and noticed the tornado was not coming my way so I watched it till it left. It wasn't close enough get any debris near my house.

  • Oh I see. Still must have been pretty scary though.

  • Oh my god.

I moved here during the summer, to Bartlett, and My best friend who goes to my school also lives in Arlington, she told me about the storm!

She said she was scared to death and her mom said it killed one of their old neighbors, so she had to move into different houses becuase of that damage.

    SCARY

  • Holy shizz, Im RIGHT IN THE PATH OF IT D: I live in Arlington and there were several funnels here..but we were out in Kroger getting some food o.o *shakes head* I remember that day..and it was..scary.

  • We had a tornado go into town today, it touched down but immediately went back up, so i guess im insanely lucky, we had hail the size of golf balls, even some as big as maybe a Tennis Ball/ Speaking of classic signatures, if you look at 1:59 closely, that Hook Echo even kinda looks like a Tornado itself.

  • that sounded just like he said it.."I'VE NEVER HEARD OF ONE OF THESE OF ALL MY LIFE"..nevertheless Dave's on air coverage just may have edged out Wreg's actual live shot of the tornado coming into the city!

  • He meant he never heard of a "tornado emergency" before; he's familiar with tornado watches and warnings, but not a "tornado emergency."

  • Extremely rare for a tornado emergency to be issued by the NWS...I can recall only one other instance of a tornado emergency being issued, and that was during the 1996 Illinois Tornado Outbreak.

  • The first tornado emergency that was issued was for the May 3, 1999 OKC tornado. Check out Wikipedia for a list of all Tornado Emergency

  • yeah, tornado emergencies are very rare

  • Ive never heard of one either, could someone tell me what it means? Like its about to hit you right then?

  • Tornado Emergencies are issued for a county, but usually just one city, if the National Weather Services has trained spotters determine that there is a tornado heading towards that city, and it will and has produced very bad damage. If they know a tornado is on the ground but just in an open field, there probably won't be one. Hopefully this answers your question :D

  • Thanks, it did

  • we got trapped in this... not good... i was in the back of a rv watchin this on tv and i was like oh shit.. oh shit... oh shit... we saw the tornado but thank god we were farther north east . goin home was scary. and to think we live in ohio

  • oh ya i live in fairview outside of nashville ya my mom made us cupcakes to eat in the basement lol

  • how long ago was this and what channel on direct tv

  • man i was in that it was scary good video!!!

  • we had a tornado in this storm touchdown less than than a mile down my street that took town 5+ houses and some high power power lines.....i vive in Arlington

  • i also remember watching this on a portable 5" tv because the power was out

  • I am amazed how calm Dave Brown is here. He does his very best to get people to take the tornadoes seriously. It can be very scary to be caught up in a tornado. I've never been in one, but I've heard tornado sirens go off, and it's a creepy feeling. You can never be sure what could happen next. The main point is that you should take every tornado warning seriously. Tornadoes can strike at anywhere and at any time. They know no season or boundaries.

  • You can hear an FS 2001 siren in the background. It cuts in and out because it rotates.

  • FS thunderbolt 1000t sounds way better

  • He never heard of a "tornado emergency"? Maybe he was unfamiliar with the F5 that hit Oklahoma City in 1999.

  • He meant that he never heard one that happened in the city of Memphis

  • Or Greensburg, KS 5/4/07

  • I was so freaking scared i was telling my mom lets take cover and she said lets enjoy the experience i was like WTF

  • viper mode wat da fuk ha ha ha ha ha

  • I saw the funnel from I-40!! My dad and I hightailed our asses out of there!!! Haha!

  • And I was in the Bartlett area. hahah

  • Lived through it. :)

    Honestly wasn't that scary...

  • that technology is incredible. great coverage.

  • i live in jackson in madison county and that storm was CRAZY!!!! evry millisecond there was cloud to cloud lightning (maybe some cloud to ground) but oh my gosh, after the tornado hit us, it was picth black. we drove out to the interstate: headlights....that's all you could see...

  • holy s***

  • Is any difference between Doppler and Vipir radar or are they basically the same?

  • Great news coverage.

  • dam at 4:23 there is friggin super cell t-storms all over the map...dauuum. what an outbreak

  • i grew up watching him in the morning getting ready for school! i've never seen him so freaked out

  • Dave Brown is one of the most professional weatherman I've see. The reason for talking about the radar is to prove how accurate it is. He is trying to get people to take it seriously. He is not showboating. He is that good. This was an unprecedented event, so it took unprecedented coverage for my area.

  • @roadgeek09: At least he's as calm as can be. That's professionalism.

  • HI DAVE BROWN!

  • never saw a tornado in my life

  • i can here a siren in the backround?

  • yes, i live in memphis. the siren is right next to the studio. it is an ACA Penetrator.

  • wmctv5 need better cameras locations around Memphis..as good as Dave was wreg ch. 3 killed them wit dat live shot of da tornado coming into da city.

  • but wmctv's radar is much better.

  • tornado emergency is when a tornado is imminent in a populated metro area

  • I'm sorry but when he said that he never heard of a tornado emergency that was sad. Thats a term thats used here when a tornado is acutally on the ground. A whats up with the sierns going off the whole time?

  • You make an interesting point but as someone who works for a National Weather Service office, I can tell you the Tornado Emergency issuance is a relatively new thing. They've really gotten more use in the last year. Keep in mind also, they weren't started until the Oklahoma outbreak in 1999.

  • This was much better than when I was there last, but I should say, if you're going to cover weather, do it professionally. Something didn't seem right to me with this- more of a "morning anchor" style than a "listen to me and you'll be safe" style.

I urge you next time you're in LR and there's storms, to watch the different stations- the coverage is better. The NWS, ADEM, hospitals and news stations are teaming up through ham radio to cover better. Live Cams, radio, spotters, LR is the best!

  • This was ripped from a VIPIR promo, which this video is identical to, showing off the latest system. But WMC-TV offers the best coverage in Memphis. Believe me. Their VTI/BTI indicatior has been an excellent supplement to their expertise.

  • are trained for this, and I would take the word of a spotter over a computer program's estimate any day. The coverage in other cities is similar to this- more of a show than actual coverage. I've been fortunate enough to travel the us and see this type of coverage (or maybe I should say unfortunate) but other markets could learn from LR. That's not to say that I wouldn't watch this coverage if I was there, but I can assure you that if you come to LR, you know where that storm is! but much better

  • take anything away from the meteorologists, but if you're going to have coverage, don't keep showing off your new toy. Don't interrupt the other guy constantly, and remind people in the path to take cover.

Little Rock tv is starting to use ham radio operators and storm spotters such as myself to get the word out on damage and :assess the damage" instantly. They could be rope tor, or they could be an EF5 wedge- it's nice to get how strong it is out.

Don't rely on your machines soley, spotters

  • "almost certainly there is a tornado out there" "Trained weather spotters report a tornado on the ground" You think there is a tornado out there? NAH!

Yum Yum- one of the greatest town names I've ever heard of!!

Ok, much, MUCH better than when I was there in 1999 and tornado warnings were going off. Still, not as good as Little Rock's. I've been in several different cities throughout the US, and have seen similar coverage. This seems like a radio morning show compared to others. That's not to

  • one of those tornados went rite passed my house i was lucky

  • i live in Jackson and there was a funnel circling the sportsplex 2 blocks away and tit went from the sportsplex all the way to union university and we FELT the vibration and heard the roar. i've never been through such a scary moment in my life, and i'm a tornado chaser. i was gonna chase it but my dad chose the right thing to stay and just wait it out. and i thank god that my mom's teacher, let her go home before an hour earlier that the ef-4 tornado hit union.

  • i was in that storm in North Ms and then Memphis it was wild

  • im confused!! didnt this happen on wednesday not tuesday?

  • i got a lot of this and i was sooo freaked out cuz my old school pisgah let out at like 10:00 and it was dark at like 3:00.I NEVER wanna go thruogh that again

  • haha little scared kids.

  • i remember this. i live in atoka,tn so all we got was rain and yet everywhere else got tornadoes

  • I'd rather see this than American Idol. Dave Brown could kick Simon's ass.

  • Kimt live eye ...

  • BTI's are amazing. VIPIR is an amazing detection system.

  • Dave Brown is the man...period.

  • can anyone belive that people were bitching about the coverage being too long, they were mad cus they were missing american idol.... dumbasses

  • wow i live in collierville and we always get missed by a tornado for some reason

  • I live in colierville to ^^

  • that HAS to be a scary situtation I can hear the tornado sirens going off outside the building.

  • Here in Jackson,MS we just had a squall line come through and produced 3 tornadoes mainly in western part of MS, but the winds all day that day were gusting between 40-45 mph, and in some places those winds did more damage than the actual squall line!

  • I remember that day.I was a at wedding reception for my mom and dads friend and me and my friend went to her room and watched the news.We ended up at my grandprarents house.Yes, that is the siren.Scary night

  • on february 5 alone, there was 131 tornadoes on the NWS storm reports page

  • I was in Frankfort, KY and we didn't get hit until like 1 in the morning. We had a Tornado Touchdown it was down for 2 minutes and went back up. It was an EF1 but it caused EF2 Damaged. I was out of school on the 6th

  • WMC-TV has some of the best TV coverage.

  • 1:40 you can see a hook! meaning there has to be a least a tornado but thats a pretty good size hook so thats part of what led a twister outbreak.

  • That was a scary day for anyone in the Mid-South!

  • ...is that a tornado siren in the backround?

  • it does seem that...

  • I don't think it is a siren because the storms were well clear of the city of Memphis and that noise was still in the background...

  • no its a siren, if theres a tornado in ANY part of the county, the sirens go off all over

  • that's pretty dumb. Let's freak out people in downtown Memphis because there might be a tornado on the ground 30 miles to the NE and moving away from the City. At least in the Chicago area, they only turn on the sirens in the communities in the path of the storm.

  • um downtown memphis was hit...

  • um, no it wasn't. The tornado stayed on the south side of the city. I know that and I don't even live there.

  • Unless you've lived through an EF5 storm from several miles AWAY from a metro area you don't know what it's like... and what's more, that particular siren is so close to the station and is so loud, you can't help but hear it in the studio. I was there, trust me these guys don't hype.

  • I know almost exactly what that is like. Click on my screen name and look up the storm video I posted...

  • Uh, yeah, it's not dumb. Memphis covers a large outlying land area. It's a big town. Don't think it's a couple of shacks on the river. I've heard of several storms going through Memphis... ya'll just have snowstorms, wind gusts, and weiners

  • I know what Memphis looks like, I've been there before. All I'm saying is why sound the sirens downtown when the storm is far away and clearly moving away from the area. As far as the weather here, the Chicago area has had several F4 and one F5 tornadoes within 30 miles of the city, not just snowstorms, wind gusts and "weiners", whatever the hell that means.

  • Shelby County (Memphis) does not have a selective aural warning system (tornado siren) like Cook County (Chicago) has. So, if there is a tornado warning for Shelby County, all sirens go off.

  • That blows. (No pun intended)

  • really? We used to have that in Little Rock, but they've fixed that (thank God- having a tornado 25 miles from you and having your sirens go off is annoying).

  • Memphis & Shelby Emergency Management sounds their out door warning sirens when a tornado is spotted

by doppler radio, or by visual sight by trained weather spotters. Any thime a tornado is spotted any where in the county.

  • It is too bad your little battery powered color tv is going to be useless here in just a few months.
