Wow...I was looking for that one. Yes, a couple of teeth and lots of stitches and the Blues trailing. Shanny comes back, holds his sh*t together to score 2 and put the game on ice, then went looking for justice. Big Walt wanted none of it, knowing he was already on painkillers and numbed into insanity. Had to be the best game I ever saw at the old barn and I saw a LOT of games there. Shanny had me at "let's go"....wish the cheapskates that owned the Blues could have kept him...
Garrison:Let's see 600 goals 1300 pts and 2400pims.A golds medal and 3 stanley cups and you say he can't play?Shanahan is one of the power forwards ever.
Was a great hockey moment - No one could believe it when Shanny came back out in the third - to say the crowd went nuts would be an understatement. I miss 'em both.
Wow, I forgot about the Vipers! I was just talking about the Blues only, I'm sure there were other events once the Blues season ended. However, good memory :o)
Side note to this, this game was the last ever regular season game at the old St.Louis Arena for the Blues. They did play 2 playoff games that year but lost both to Dallas
So the story goes something like this. Tkachuck high sticked Shanahan. Shanahan went into the locker for some ungodly amount of stitches, like 52 or something with his lip hanging off his face practically. At intermission Shanahan asked Kelly Chase how he looked and rumor has it Kelly Chase replied " More chics for Chaser." Shanahan then returns to the game, gets his 50th goal of the season and light up Tkachuk.
hmm... why is it that Shanahan played on such great teams? Perhaps cuz he was on them. As for "jumping Tkachuk" any player who highsticks another player should probably expect some retaliation. That's the way the game used to be played. I'm quite sure Walt knew what was in-store for him.
Also I was at this game and Shanahan was awarded the First Star of the game. So I guess others at the time agreed what he did that night was spectacular.
I watched that game at home. As I recall, Walt high sticked Shannahan and got a double minor. When Shanny heard the double minor and not a major being called, he got patched up and went after him in the 3rd period.
...in a radio interview, Shannahan confessed in that in the 1st game aginst each other the next season, Tkachuk approached him at center ice during warm-ups. Ready for a throw down, Shanny was stunned when he asked for an autographed stick for his sister, who was a big fan.
tkachuk high stuck shanny and he left the game to get i believe 40 stitches on his lip/cheek, he comes back to the game with the blues trailing by a goal, scores two and then puts an exclamation point on the night by kicking tkachuks ass... great night
Im a Tkachuk faa also but anyone who knows hockey knows that at that time Tkachuk was considered "a poor man's Brendan Shanahan"... and to say he didn't have the stones? the guy fought with a face being held together by a string. If that ain't stones I don't know what is.....
uhm, anyone that knows hockey knows that 1) tkachuk was younger and thus peaked later and 2) that Shanny benefited from playing on some of the greatest teams in hockey in the last couple decades, whereas KT played on some of the worst.
as for having stones because he "fought with a face ... held together by a string"...you don't get it. he didn't fight. he jumped tkachuk's and punched him in the back of the head a few times. anyone who knows the game knows that ain't a fight or take stones.
Shanahan also has fought the likes of McSorley, Brashear, Probert, Berube, etc. All while scoring over 656 goals in his career. Tkachuk has a game style like Shanny's, just not as good. Hall of Fame material though.
Story why Shanahan jumped Tkachuk was because he high-stuck Shanahan earlier in the game and Shanahan had to leave to get his lip stitched up and got his revenge here. Also for anyone who cares, this was the final regular season game played at the old St.Louis Arena, the Kiel Center/Savvis Center/Scottrade Center opened the following season
As I recall in the second period Walt caught Shanny with a high stick and knocked a tooth or two out and busted his lip. Shanny came back in the third, scored two goals, and then pummeled Walt. Was a great game.
@andrewborody Keith Tkachuk's nickname is Walt, or Walter, or Big Walt. At lease when he was with the Blues it was. The old time Rangers player was Walt Tzaczuk or something like that.
Shanny's a legend, and this November of 2012 I expect him getting inducted into the HOF...Tkachuk on the other hand was overrated.
