  • My Favorite.

  • How can 43 people dislike a harmless intro? Lol

  • So makes me want to watch Die hard!!! God this brings me back!!!!

  • It was a big deal for me to see this. My best friend's mother had HBO when this was the promo She lived in NYC in the Bronx in an apt. I lived in wash DC in an apt and it was years before I got cable. The only way an apt could get it was the owner of the building had to get it in all the apts. I didn't get it until I bought a house in the 90's.

  • Remember those little guides you'd get with hbo to see the schedule? We used to scour that thing just to see which R rated movies would be on. Everything seemed larger than life then didn't it?

  • Ah the good old days! I remember sneaking downstairs with my brother late at night to catch fast times at ridgemont high on hbo ha. Phoebe Cates sums it up.

  • makes me feel cozy

  • our band teases this...

  • I know this 80's video clip by heart. I know a thing or two about the 80's because I was born in 1980.

  • @sue42880 What's your earliest memory (television-wise)?

  • Was this also aired in later 80's? I was born in 87' but I remember this somehow. I'm sure I do because of those seizure inducing spinning lights.

  • OMG I remember this....

  • Thank you for this piece of history.

  • They should put this back on HBO as the Feature Presentation opener. Surely outshines the Viewpoint Creative redux from last year by a million times over! This took effort ;-)

  • They should put this back on HBO all the time.

  • @Dreaper1883 I agree. But they'd have to remaster it in HD. And maybe adapt it to newer HBO shows and specials.

  • That's the part I remember. I also remember missing this intro as they started to phase it out. I'd love to see this 1 come back, digitally remastered or something. They could update the family & even the flying over the neighborhood part, but the space part & the music is timeless. This brings back so many good childhood memories.

  • This is my favorite HBO intro of all time. I was 7 years-old in 1983. I don't remember the scene with the family in the house, or the camera flying over the neighborhood, probably because, as a kid, it never really caught my attention until the part where it goes up into space & encounters the HBO sign, & of coarse, the music that goes with it.

  • This couldn't be more 80s.

  • The following movie is rated PG-13

  • I remember this... And two channels...HBO and WHT

  • Omg I remember this intro I was about 5yrs old at the time that music ment purple rain was about to come on

  • I remember that music ment bedtime for me back then purple rain was about to come on

  • It's been almost 30 years, but I haven't forgotten the this epic intro.

  • Big things were going to happen when this popped up on the screen. Lol. Love it.

  • A copy of the Brazilian broadcaster SBT, old TVS: /watch?v=PXC0a7nnvKY&feature=related

  • none of you appeciate how sweet this music is

  • Sigh...nostalgia for me. I actually remember seeing this intro for HBO way back when on TVs that had VCRs and VHS tapes. The 1980s were the best in my opinion. Why did progress have to eliminate the "good old days"?

  • AHHHHH THE GOOD OL DAYS WHEN HBO WAS THE ONLY GAME IN TOWN AND IT DID NOT COST MUCH BACK THEN.

  • This intro makes you feel like you're a member of something pretty kick ass! LOL

  • i just noticed that that tannnnnnn sound in the beginning may have inspired the macintosh start up sound

  • This intro is mint! As a kid, this sequence always had a slightly ominous feeling to me - as if the HBO logo was coming out of the blackness of space to attack the viewer...or as if it were a doomsday like meteor about to strike the miniature town below.

  • Is that Robert Hayes?

  • Wow, this brings back so many great memories! Thanks for posting!

  • I remember being a little kid and watching the making of this. The set was all miniatures. Brilliant.

  • This needs to be brought back! Best HBO intro EVER!

  • Bring. This. BACK!

  • This intro by itself is better than most hollywood movies.

  • @mindsaber I would definitely consider it a timeless classic.

  • Comment removed

  • Why did they ever change this? It's a masterpiece.

  • I remember they still had that intro when I was a kid.

  • scary

  • H B O still R O C K Z !

  • I remember this

  • ahhhhh the memories

  • hahaha that was Fucking GOLD!!!! RETRO much!

  • Wow brings back memories i was like 6 or 7 when the stopped using that intro

  • 43 retards dislike

  • I feel like a kid again. I actually used to dance to this LOL!

  • HBO had a rule: R rated movies only at NIGHT!

  • Is it me or does part of that intro sound like a slowed-down version of the theme from Rocky? Watch Rocky I where Apollo knocks him down in the 14th, (and is stunned when Rocky gets up at 9), and listen to the music playing. Then watch this & listen to the music.

  • @volchkov88 I'd never noticed that before, but, yes, it does remind me of the Rocky theme.

  • classic

  • Awesome! Brings back lots o' memories :)

  • retro gold!

  • the 1983 intro was first shown before a diffrent movie starts on HBO (e.g. The Cat in the Hat, Clueless, Aquamarine, Stuart Little, Back to the Future, Kit Kittredge: An American Girl).

  • I still have the intro on one of many vhs tapes. I saw it first in 1983. Thanks for posting!

  • I started crying on just this intro God I was a little kid when this was around I remember the tune so easily.I would sit infron of the T.V and wait with so much anticipation for the movie dam those days are over tough but with youtube they never really left.

  • wow, that actually unlocked parts of my memory that were probably forever lost otherwise.....seriously

  • I luv HBO, MTV and Disney Channel. MTV and Disney Channel are free channels but HBO is not. You have to purchase it thru DirecTV to watch films on HBO Family (even Chrissa's very first HBO Original Movie).

  • so, my 14 yr old daughter says, this sounds BETTER than the one played today, although the "melody" was retained. :D She says, "they should bring it back!"

  • This intro brings back memories. It's classy and professional looking. I wish HBO would skip the long intro and just show the chrome lettering spining in space. The only thing missing is when it's over I don't hear; " The following program is rate R."

  • This is EXACTLY what should be playing as I pull out into her face

  • there is a CD series that covers different eras of TV and this theme is on "Television's Greatest Hits Vol. 6" which is subtitled "Cable Ready and its track #61. When I heard that theme I KNEW I had to come looking for it on here and I found like 20 different versions and they all rock!

GOD i wish it was the 1980s again!

  • well i'd just like to say , FUCK YOU and uhh FUCK HIM and since we on HBO yall can suck my mothafuckin dick

  • I remember this!

  • I remember this!

  • I remember in the 80's HBO had a special where they showed how they made this intro.

  • Geesh I remember as a kid watching this at my uncle and grandmothers house lol, they had cable we lived in the country got 3 channels 3 and PBS and UHF. :)

Oh and we played duck hunt and mario on the original Nintendo lol :) good times

  • You know what? I'm a kid and I love this. I haven't been alive until 2002! But seriously this is way better that CGI. The HBO was actually made out of metal, not photoshopped gray blocky chunks! Plus my friend Carson has a DS and I bought NAMCO Museum because I looove playing it and we were download playing and Carson was like "I wish I had this game it's so fun!" So kids don't hate the 80s, they are just too immersed in modern stuff to even realize the awesomeness of retro.

  • I still remember this intro from when I was a kid. They just don't make memorable advertising like this anymore.

  • Comments are for fucking fags...nobody cares what I think

  • This Logo brought to you by some mind; the mind...use it, end of story

  • Even though this is just an "opening" let me just say that uh, oh yeah shit just got real bitches lol.

  • Very good...

  • LOVE IT

  • Yeah man, this takes me back, way back.. Who do we need to talk to to get this back on air

  • I started rocking out as soon as that drum kit hit.

  • "The following movie is rated PG-13."

  • Sort of had that post-disco feel to it.

  • I'm guessing not too many parents sit down and watch HBO with their kids anymore.

  • I still watch this today and STILL get the chills from it!

  • Hey Beastmasters On!

  • Most EPIC intro to any, and I mean ANY, TV channel of all time!

  • man. the music. the giant spinning letters. how can anyone resist this as a child?

  • @rasheedzee It's breathtaking!

  • Born in 1989, but I still saw this intro in the early 90's. LOVED IT

  • this shit is EPIC bro

  • I was 5 yrs old then and I remember this!! Thanks so much for this!

  • I was born in 1980 and seen this a million times as a kid.i swear im gonna cry,im gonna frickin cry

  • Imagine seeing a great intro like this on HBO today only to find out it was for Justin Bieber's movie.

  • Wow....takes us back to a simpler time, I remember the excitement as a kid. What I wouldn't give to back to one more summer night in the 80's and sitting down with a bowl of popcorn popped with our new "popcorn maker"...HA! Now these days most people can't AFFORD HBO or the movie channels anymore, including myself....sad.

  • @jtesla80 well I think we can make your dream happen my friend, it won't take much. I just need the following Items.....a 1984/85 Deloreon, some time circuits, a flux capacitor, gasoline, and a good supply of plutoneum. I think if we can get all those supplies together, you'll be shovin that popcorn in your mouth faster than you can say 'feature presentation".

  • The best HBO intro ever!!!!

  • As a kid, I remember running home after school and sneaking into my parents closet to my dad's VCR tapes. He recorded a lot of the Real Sex shows and I would have a quick wank before they got home from work....Ahhh those were the days!

  • I must have seen this intro a zillion times as a kid. Love it

  • OOOohhhh MAN...!! You knew a GREAT MOVIE was about to start...!

  • I remember seeing this as a kid and getting amped up...man i miss the good ole days

  • HBO should bring this back

  • I remember this as a kid. God im getting old. :(

  • I could watch this 1,000 times and not get tired.

  • this was maked using the 3DS Max of the 80's.

  • I heard this on talkradar

  • Anybody else remember that they DID go off the air at night like TV stations used to?

  • @jmil2tx oh yea i remember that ..like fall asleep in front of the tv when a show was on and wake up to those colored lines and the humming sound cause that channel went off the air ..man how i remember that ..now channels play all night ..its crazy these days

  • @lunarworks I'm Canadian and we had a sat. Dish, and not one of those one's you mount on the roof, Im talking about those big fuckers were you had pour a concrete base to mount it on. And yes, we scored HBO and a whole lot more with those big bastards! lol Also, we weren't rich. We just worked hard and saved up to buy shit like that.

  • I saw this on The FIghter. This was the intro Dicky 's crack documentary. lol

  • I remember this... Actually not, I wasn't even born

  • This should be my alarm clock ringtone.

  • I loved this then, and I love it now!!!

  • i remember this!!! back when cable was a rareity to have.

  • My God, it's full of stars!

  • Hey...Is Terminator I or Aliens on??...I hear the HBO Presentation theme!...Let's go see!!

  • I am 100% certain that this is the greatest station ID effect between 1983 and 2011. No station has ever done a better job of capturing the imagination, emotion, and symbolism as this quick special effect and music combo.

  • lol!! I just saw 2000 likes for the first time!! here i go 2001 weeh!

  • I feel like im 8 years old and about to watch Police Academy 4 for the 25th time.

  • Thumbs up if you see the big dipper at 0:46....

  • It is my firm belief that when you did not have the luxury of fancy computers to make visual effects, when you had to spend countless hours in creating something as complicated as this was back in the 80s. You end up with not only something that was well thought out, but was an epic introduction that when i heard the into i knew something good was on TV. Sure they used miniatures. Did we care? No. Thank you HBO for uploading this because it felt like i gained a piece of my childhood back.

  • I am 26 and i saw this intro on a beta copy of The secret of NIMH back when beta cassettes were still a big thing. The song in burnt in my mind since i was 5.

  • the shortened version was also shown in 1995 when HBO aired It Takes Two, The Baby-Sitters Club, My Girl, My Girl 2, Mannequin, Milk Money, Troop Beverly Hills and Clueless on TV

  • This was the createst intro to a station ever

  • This was the createst intro to a station ever

  • @GeekBoy03 That first fuzzy part wasn't included in the original; they just tagged it on since HBO themselves uploaded this clip. I think they do that for everything they put on youtube.

  • 41 people not have cable tv

  • all they would need is 0:44 on to the end

  • This is 1983? They play the same few seconds on "Curb Your Enthusiasm" amd "Entourage"

  • @GeekBoy03 Yes, this was played in 1983.

  • Does the whooshing sound at the end sound curiously similar to Superman's (Christopher Reeve) super-blowing to anyone else?

  • when I saw this as a kid, I didn't know that it was crappy animation.

I did know, however, that the next 2 hours were ganna be epic.

  • Brings back good memories of watching "special" movies

  • If only HBO was still this classy.

  • @NESherv yep.. this proves it.. you can find anything on youtube.. this was the only part i would see as a kid.. then it would say Rated R.. and my mom would say bed time.. Lol.. nice post..

  • @jayb4321 preach it bro

  • @detroitsbest yep.. as a kid that music ment bedtime in tha 80's.. Rated R..Lol.

  • 40 people are still bitter about not having cable as a kid.

  • I remember when Superman 2 first started showing on HBO and this was a great intro to it

  • Wow! Gives me goosebumps now.

  • I think by around 1996 or 97 they shortened this intro

  • Still more impressive than any modern CGI.

  • Memories. As a kid we put words to the music. Well, actually just "HBO" but hey. :)

  • @0:48 = mind blown

  • Excellent. This was totally worth the extra 12.95 a month in 1987.

  • Influenced by the opening of "The Shining"

  • 360p not 240!! :P

  • i was 11 when this was the intro,... as I turn 40 yrs old.. i remember it like it was yesterday!

  • @jillnrandy2025 But you are still a faggot. Go kill yourself.

  • I LOVE HBO, I LOVE TELECINE! hahaha

  • LOVE IT!!! Everytime I heard this song come on as a kid I knew there would be a good chance of me seeing boobs before my mom could change the channel :)

  • @cdhankins102976 Hahahaahahahah! My mom wud just cover my eyes

  • @cdhankins102976 I lost my virginity to HBO... lol .. Man I know what you mean and even if we lost it and it got scrambled you could still make out the boobs.. ahh those were the days!

  • i just turned 5 years old!

  • wow thw coolest thing i can remamber i was 4 when this came out the multo colered o kicks ass

  • year i was born. so nostalgic.

  • @cristianluna619

    Same here.

  • LOL!!! This brings back such memories. When I was little (I was 5 in '83) I used to envision that part inside the O with all the multicolored lasers was a skating rink

  • I was there

  • Haha just got slapped with nostalgia

  • i was born in 85 and ive seen this intro many times they've used it long after 83

  • great intro, the music is so great on this intro.

  • lol i do miss this

  • Just to freak viewers out every once in a while HBO should still run this at the beginning of a movie to make people go , "HUH?" :) Or "WO!!!" I remember the space part, but I don't recall the part in the living room and going through town. The space part is ingrained in my memory form days at my grandparents house vegging on their floor at night watching the tube. Or sneaking out when I wasn't supposed to watch, traumatizing myself with The Creep Show. Stupid devil monkey freaked me out.

  • Lol scale models. That was artful.

  • Comment removed

  • This sent chills up my spine; childhood relived, heh.

  • This, or the "Rocky" theme? Tough call...

  • this aint DEFIB Part 2?

  • Good music

  • bring it back

  • haha at the beginning- just like old times. you had to get up and go turn the dial...later they came out with those long ass cords so you could move the little slider cable box around the room. The movie channels were all the way to the right and my Dad would duct tape a little piece of wood or something on there so me and my step brother couldn't watch R movies.

  • you have to be rich to have cable in this old day but you have to be super rich to have hbo!

  • this song makes me want to fight!

  • HBO came from SPACE?!

  • You know, I never realized that's
