It was a big deal for me to see this. My best friend's mother had HBO when this was the promo She lived in NYC in the Bronx in an apt. I lived in wash DC in an apt and it was years before I got cable. The only way an apt could get it was the owner of the building had to get it in all the apts. I didn't get it until I bought a house in the 90's.
Remember those little guides you'd get with hbo to see the schedule? We used to scour that thing just to see which R rated movies would be on. Everything seemed larger than life then didn't it?
Ah the good old days! I remember sneaking downstairs with my brother late at night to catch fast times at ridgemont high on hbo ha. Phoebe Cates sums it up.
They should put this back on HBO as the Feature Presentation opener. Surely outshines the Viewpoint Creative redux from last year by a million times over! This took effort ;-)
That's the part I remember. I also remember missing this intro as they started to phase it out. I'd love to see this 1 come back, digitally remastered or something. They could update the family & even the flying over the neighborhood part, but the space part & the music is timeless. This brings back so many good childhood memories.
This is my favorite HBO intro of all time. I was 7 years-old in 1983. I don't remember the scene with the family in the house, or the camera flying over the neighborhood, probably because, as a kid, it never really caught my attention until the part where it goes up into space & encounters the HBO sign, & of coarse, the music that goes with it.
Sigh...nostalgia for me. I actually remember seeing this intro for HBO way back when on TVs that had VCRs and VHS tapes. The 1980s were the best in my opinion. Why did progress have to eliminate the "good old days"?
This intro is mint! As a kid, this sequence always had a slightly ominous feeling to me - as if the HBO logo was coming out of the blackness of space to attack the viewer...or as if it were a doomsday like meteor about to strike the miniature town below.
Is it me or does part of that intro sound like a slowed-down version of the theme from Rocky? Watch Rocky I where Apollo knocks him down in the 14th, (and is stunned when Rocky gets up at 9), and listen to the music playing. Then watch this & listen to the music.
the 1983 intro was first shown before a diffrent movie starts on HBO (e.g. The Cat in the Hat, Clueless, Aquamarine, Stuart Little, Back to the Future, Kit Kittredge: An American Girl).
I started crying on just this intro God I was a little kid when this was around I remember the tune so easily.I would sit infron of the T.V and wait with so much anticipation for the movie dam those days are over tough but with youtube they never really left.
I luv HBO, MTV and Disney Channel. MTV and Disney Channel are free channels but HBO is not. You have to purchase it thru DirecTV to watch films on HBO Family (even Chrissa's very first HBO Original Movie).
so, my 14 yr old daughter says, this sounds BETTER than the one played today, although the "melody" was retained. :D She says, "they should bring it back!"
This intro brings back memories. It's classy and professional looking. I wish HBO would skip the long intro and just show the chrome lettering spining in space. The only thing missing is when it's over I don't hear; " The following program is rate R."
there is a CD series that covers different eras of TV and this theme is on "Television's Greatest Hits Vol. 6" which is subtitled "Cable Ready and its track #61. When I heard that theme I KNEW I had to come looking for it on here and I found like 20 different versions and they all rock!
Geesh I remember as a kid watching this at my uncle and grandmothers house lol, they had cable we lived in the country got 3 channels 3 and PBS and UHF. :)
Oh and we played duck hunt and mario on the original Nintendo lol :) good times
You know what? I'm a kid and I love this. I haven't been alive until 2002! But seriously this is way better that CGI. The HBO was actually made out of metal, not photoshopped gray blocky chunks! Plus my friend Carson has a DS and I bought NAMCO Museum because I looove playing it and we were download playing and Carson was like "I wish I had this game it's so fun!" So kids don't hate the 80s, they are just too immersed in modern stuff to even realize the awesomeness of retro.
Wow....takes us back to a simpler time, I remember the excitement as a kid. What I wouldn't give to back to one more summer night in the 80's and sitting down with a bowl of popcorn popped with our new "popcorn maker"...HA! Now these days most people can't AFFORD HBO or the movie channels anymore, including myself....sad.
@jtesla80 well I think we can make your dream happen my friend, it won't take much. I just need the following Items.....a 1984/85 Deloreon, some time circuits, a flux capacitor, gasoline, and a good supply of plutoneum. I think if we can get all those supplies together, you'll be shovin that popcorn in your mouth faster than you can say 'feature presentation".
As a kid, I remember running home after school and sneaking into my parents closet to my dad's VCR tapes. He recorded a lot of the Real Sex shows and I would have a quick wank before they got home from work....Ahhh those were the days!
When I was a kid, you knew when this came on the family t.v., it was a footrace through to the couch to get the best seat in the house! So many great memories!
@jmil2tx oh yea i remember that ..like fall asleep in front of the tv when a show was on and wake up to those colored lines and the humming sound cause that channel went off the air ..man how i remember that ..now channels play all night ..its crazy these days
@lunarworks I'm Canadian and we had a sat. Dish, and not one of those one's you mount on the roof, Im talking about those big fuckers were you had pour a concrete base to mount it on. And yes, we scored HBO and a whole lot more with those big bastards! lol Also, we weren't rich. We just worked hard and saved up to buy shit like that.
I am 100% certain that this is the greatest station ID effect between 1983 and 2011. No station has ever done a better job of capturing the imagination, emotion, and symbolism as this quick special effect and music combo.
It is my firm belief that when you did not have the luxury of fancy computers to make visual effects, when you had to spend countless hours in creating something as complicated as this was back in the 80s. You end up with not only something that was well thought out, but was an epic introduction that when i heard the into i knew something good was on TV. Sure they used miniatures. Did we care? No. Thank you HBO for uploading this because it felt like i gained a piece of my childhood back.
I am 26 and i saw this intro on a beta copy of The secret of NIMH back when beta cassettes were still a big thing. The song in burnt in my mind since i was 5.
the shortened version was also shown in 1995 when HBO aired It Takes Two, The Baby-Sitters Club, My Girl, My Girl 2, Mannequin, Milk Money, Troop Beverly Hills and Clueless on TV
@GeekBoy03 That first fuzzy part wasn't included in the original; they just tagged it on since HBO themselves uploaded this clip. I think they do that for everything they put on youtube.
@NESherv yep.. this proves it.. you can find anything on youtube.. this was the only part i would see as a kid.. then it would say Rated R.. and my mom would say bed time.. Lol.. nice post..

@cdhankins102976 I lost my virginity to HBO... lol .. Man I know what you mean and even if we lost it and it got scrambled you could still make out the boobs.. ahh those were the days!
LOL!!! This brings back such memories. When I was little (I was 5 in '83) I used to envision that part inside the O with all the multicolored lasers was a skating rink
Just to freak viewers out every once in a while HBO should still run this at the beginning of a movie to make people go , "HUH?" :) Or "WO!!!" I remember the space part, but I don't recall the part in the living room and going through town. The space part is ingrained in my memory form days at my grandparents house vegging on their floor at night watching the tube. Or sneaking out when I wasn't supposed to watch, traumatizing myself with The Creep Show. Stupid devil monkey freaked me out.
haha at the beginning- just like old times. you had to get up and go turn the dial...later they came out with those long ass cords so you could move the little slider cable box around the room. The movie channels were all the way to the right and my Dad would duct tape a little piece of wood or something on there so me and my step brother couldn't watch R movies.
My Favorite.
